"The stench of failure hangs over [the] White House. The people know it, judging by the opinion polls, Corporate titans know it." The President "seems to concede some major misjudgments. . . . What is lacking is any clear sense of direction."
"What we are witnessing," says David Broder, is a "one-year phenomenon" of a president who is "more spectator than leader." As the Middle East is in chaos, the president---photographed in [golf] clothes, [is] heading off for a weekend at [Mar-a-Lago]. At some point down the road, the phasing out of the [Trump] presidency will confront the Republican Party with an awkward but vital choice of its future leadership [and good leaders are] working together to fill the vacuum of leadership that [Trump's] phaseout has left."
The "White House Staff [is] United by Grim . . . Reality," and the budget proposal according to one aide will have "the half-life of half an hour." Trump's "most cherished goals" cannot be reconciled. According to one unnamed staffer, "the cold, grey light of dawn is breaking."
Already the President's chief advisors are considering tax increases as part of an "overall strategy" on taxes.
OH WAIT. FOOLED YA! None of these stories are about Trump. They are all about Ronald Reagan. I just substituted Trump's name. Story 1, the "Failing Presidency," is from January 9, 1983 New York Slimes. Broder is quoted in the January 12, 1983 WaCompost. The "Grim Economic Reality" is Lou Cannon in the WaCompost, January 9, 1983, and "Tax Increases" is David Hoffman in the WaCompost, Jan. 9, 1983.
Liars gonna lie.
SMDH...;)
I do not doubt that many of our young future voters are going through the same educational transformation right now given how horrible the left has become.
But but but Larry they ALL agree Trump is a failure isn’t THAT enough? It is a consensus after all.
I knew this couldn’t be you!!No wayyyy!!
Yeah, you had me there for a moment! But it’s good to be reminded that there’s nothing new under the sun. I do remember the BS said about President Reagan’s first 100 days.
I think you could find similarly dismissive assessments of Bill Clinton in 1993...perhaps a bit later in the year. Of course by this time in his first year Clinton had had to send up three names before getting an Attorney General confirmed and had incinerated dozens of children at Waco.
The party’s over, he’ll be dropping out any day now, the die is cast. Oh wait...he won! America won!
They never change.. They’re very predictable.
How ridiculous is it that media persons, many of whom are descendants of those generations of freedom-loving men and women of the 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, and now 21st Centuries would be lap dogs for so-called "progressive" tyrants who would control them and their ability to exercise free speech and participate in group-think "resistance" to an outspoken advocate of that First Amendment right?
An ancient wisdom book once posited a reason why human beings sometimes "prefer darkness." The conclusion is worth considering here.
Shutting out honest and thoughtful debate in the public square on the ideas of liberty vs. the ideas of tyranny by major media companies contributes to an approaching intellectual darkness which existed prior to 1776.
You had my jaw dropping for a minute-——great post.
.
You da man.

The stench of failure hangs over [the] White House.
Unmitigated BULLSHIIT.
You had me going. This could have been an op ed in today’s NY Slimes.
The Democrat press is dead. I heard someone this morning saying the Correspondence Dinner last night was dismal. The press was stuck interviewing each other.
Thanks for reminding us that some things never change. Trump will overcome fake news just like RR did.
I got my first clue with “Broder.” Said to myself, Whaaaa...?
Great post, BTW.
What status is that? It ain’t free. Just sent another check.

You get to post anything you want. Your vanities count as articles.
Apparently it occasionally comes in handy to be a history Perfessor, hey?
