Trump’s attacks on Martinez should alarm the GOP
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | May 26, 2016 | James Hohmann

During a 65-minute speech in Albuquerque on Tuesday night, Donald Trump laced into New Mexico Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

He blamed her for the state’s economic problems, for the growing number of food stamp recipients and for not doing more to reject Syrian refugees. The billionaire even mused about moving to the state to run for governor himself.

“She’s got to do a better job,” Trump told thousands of supporters, per The Washington Post’s Jenna Johnson. “She’s not doing the job. We’ve got to get her moving. Come on: Let’s go, governor.”

Martinez’s press secretary, Mike Lonergan, responded with a blistering statement: “Apparently, Donald Trump doesn’t realize Governor Martinez wasn’t elected in 2000, that she has fought for welfare reform, and has strongly opposed the President’s Syrian refugee plan. But the pot shots weren’t about policy, they were about politics. And the Governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate . . . Governor Martinez doesn’t care about what Donald Trump says about her – she cares about what he says he will do to help New Mexicans. She didn’t hear anything about that today.”

...snip...

Privately, she’s been more critical. At a fundraiser in the Palm Beach mansion of billionaire David Koch last month, a donor asked about Trump. Martinez acknowledged being deeply offended by Trump’s language about immigrants. “Noting her years working as a prosecutor on the Mexican border and now as a border-state governor, Martinez said Trump’s plan to build a wall and force Mexico to pay for it was unrealistic and irresponsible,” sources told The Post’s Matea Gold and Philip Rucker afterward.

Trump was obviously irked by these and other comments, which is the only plausible explanation for why he went after Martinez.

He didn’t need to placate anybody, just not insult her and the state that was hosting his rally. He should have not said anything about her.

Nailed it. Martinez considers appearing with Trump to be kryptonite to her political future.

Susana has turned out to be a little to liberal for conservatives and way to conservative for liberals.

I don’t know anyone who deals with the school system who doesn’t despise her.

Where I live in Nevada, Trump had many opponents in the race Nevada was the 4TH of the primaries. Trump got 46 percent of the Hispanic votes, and as a precinct Captain I helped many Hispanics vote, I can tell you, the Hispanic turnout helped Trump win a landslide with so many candidates in the race.

Trump got more votes this primary than all the candidates votes combined in 2012.

Martinez isn’t worried about the Hispanic vote, with legal Hispanic there is not Trump problem its made up by the media. Legal Hispanics don’t want illegals taking their jobs and stagnating the wages or pushing them down.

Martinez for some reason is playing to La Raza, Univision, and illegals. Her state is flooded by drugs, NM has lost jobs to Mexico, the crime is high, and sections of NM are controlled by the drug cartels.

She criticizes the Trump position on the wall and says its never going to happen. She endorsed Gang of 8 eight Rubio, MR. Amnesty, and didn’t want to appear with Trump because she is Chicken-excrement.

I am glad there is no way she becomes VP.

Yes, representing New Mexico as its Governor she should have represented her people welcoming the nominee to the state and rolling out the red carpet.

She was too busy, BS. I think Trump will repudiate her with a win in 2 weeks in New Mexico. I have not seen polls, but I have to think a lot of people want the border patrolled.

Not just for drug violence and crime but knowing Cubans, ISIS,and many others are pouring over the border.

In a party that allegedly hews to principle, the only thing that should count here is: Is Martinez doing the job? In Trump’s world of accomplishment, if you’re not doing the job, out you go. What’s unfair about that?

The minute you bring in the non-merit PC factors, you become a democrat.

If Martinez really wanted to bring in Hispanic voters to Trump, why she was AWOL at the presumptive GOP nominee’s only rally in her state? Get real, she is scared of the La Raza crowd. Which I do not understand because she is term limited for governor. May be she wants to run for US Senate.

Naw, she is the gov of a small state that is probably 60-70% dems and she has to walk a fine line. He showed his ignorance by saying she was elected in 2000 when in actuality she was elected in 2010. Just because she is not in his corner 100% is no reason for him to attack her and insult the whole state. Kinda like Cruz and NY values, even though it was an almost direct quote from Trump himself the sentiment lasted a long time and hurt Cruz.

It will hurt Trump, he will almost surely lose NM now. Let’s just hope he does not need those 5 electoral votes.

“If Martinez really wanted to bring in Hispanic voters to Trump, why she was AWOL at the presumptive GOP nominee’s only rally in her state? Get real, she is scared of the La Raza crowd.”

I think you may have something there. Last Saturday, just a few days before the rally for the presumptive GOP nominee, we had the republican convention over at the Sandia Resort and Casino to elect our delegates for Cleveland and the new state party chair. Susana DID make a brief appearance and gave a short speech, but given the tension and division between both the race for party chairman, as well as the division between those who wanted to be delegates in the hopes of a brokered convention for Cruz (most of them bailed out and didn’t even show up) and delegates who wanted to represent the will of the voters, Susana just sort of magically arrived, gave her speech, and disappeared immediately afterwards. I do believe she thought she would be dealing with a hostile group, and she was right, at least in part.

I worked hard to get her into office the first go round, but by the time she needed to run for her second term I wasn’t so anxious to help anymore. IMHO, she surrounded herself with undesirable advisors, more interested compromising principles, thinking that’s the way to stay in office, than doing the right thing. And THAT’s exactly what Trump is criticizing her for. Trump hasn’t lost New Mexico, but it will be an uphill battle due to all the moronic socialists in this state!

You seem to want to ignore why Trump is where he is. Those of you who are “pacifiers”, are the problem. Newt is where he is because of his lack of frontal attack, you know, like the Republican establishment.

I talk to a lot of people and she has done some good things but not hard to shine when you follow Richardson. What surprises me is she seems to be more popular out of state than she is here. The back and forth with Trump was started by her. I often wish he wouldn’t get into things like that, but he does what he does.

People here don’t bash her for the most part but don’t brag on her either. People that follow politics in other states praise her and more likely to mention her as V.P. or Presidential material.

I wonder how much political interest there would be in her if she was not a female Hispanic?
