During a 65-minute speech in Albuquerque on Tuesday night, Donald Trump laced into New Mexico Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.
He blamed her for the states economic problems, for the growing number of food stamp recipients and for not doing more to reject Syrian refugees. The billionaire even mused about moving to the state to run for governor himself.
Shes got to do a better job, Trump told thousands of supporters, per The Washington Posts Jenna Johnson. Shes not doing the job. Weve got to get her moving. Come on: Lets go, governor.
Martinezs press secretary, Mike Lonergan, responded with a blistering statement: Apparently, Donald Trump doesnt realize Governor Martinez wasnt elected in 2000, that she has fought for welfare reform, and has strongly opposed the Presidents Syrian refugee plan. But the pot shots werent about policy, they were about politics. And the Governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate . . . Governor Martinez doesnt care about what Donald Trump says about her she cares about what he says he will do to help New Mexicans. She didnt hear anything about that today.
...snip...
Privately, shes been more critical. At a fundraiser in the Palm Beach mansion of billionaire David Koch last month, a donor asked about Trump. Martinez acknowledged being deeply offended by Trumps language about immigrants. Noting her years working as a prosecutor on the Mexican border and now as a border-state governor, Martinez said Trumps plan to build a wall and force Mexico to pay for it was unrealistic and irresponsible, sources told The Posts Matea Gold and Philip Rucker afterward.
Trump was obviously irked by these and other comments, which is the only plausible explanation for why he went after Martinez.

No, GOP needs to be rid of incompetent drunk politicians like Martinez.
I hope Trump gives an ultimatum soon to Ryan. I am tired of Trump trying to woo him. If no endorsement is forthcoming by June 7, Trump should publicly request that Ryan resign as chair of the convention, Enough is enough.
Yeah I agree he probably shouldn’t have said it.
But did you get to see the crowd reaction to these statements?
THEY WENT WILD CHEERING SUPPORT.
These comments caused the most audience support of anything he said at that speech.
Yes when I heard Suzannah Martinez was a possible VP pick I just shook my head. She’s another Nicki Haley.
The Martinez political career is coming to an abrupt end...unless she gets with the program or, goes back to being a Democrat!!! She like Hillary Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama are lost at sea, while they work feverishly, together, to destroy the American Republic.....broom her....DJT!!! The majority of Americans...got your back covered....she’s a full blown loser!!!
Whatever ‘concern’ this author from the Washington Post is expressing needs to be seen as the exact opposite path Trump should follow. This paragraph is a perfect example:
“Having a stiff upper lip is required of politicians at this level..... Mitt Romney, John McCain and George W. Bush all had to play nice with elements of the party that vociferously opposed them in the primaries. This is not just something you can do for a day or a week.”
Yeah, that’s the ticket, be more like Romney, McCain, and Bush during his last years. That worked out so very well for us.
Didn’t she have a drunken episode in a hotel recently that involved the police?
Even better would be an endorsement of Ryan’s challenger in the primary.
She’s a lightweight and this shows Trump’s honesty and resolve. She spent weeks giving him shots whenever her name would (erroneously) come up as a possible VP. She couldn’t be gracious and say “Anyone would be honored to be considered, etc.” She she got a very gentle shot in return and I notice that most of her constituents at the rally applauded Trump’s comments.
Yes, the GOPe should be concerned, but concerned about the righteous anger they have sown. This idea that she is immune because of her race and sex is sickening. Are we now the affirmative action party, with pols the recipients of “protected class” status?
Sounds like someone’s PC was injured by Trump’s speech.
I wonder what she really meant: "...help New Mexicans" or "...help new Mexicans".
Warning, don’t listen to it if you suffer from high blood pressure.

There, fixed it.
Martinez said Trumps plan to build a wall and force Mexico to pay for it was unrealistic and irresponsible,
Really? Really? How about slapping a 10% surcharge on all money transfers from illegals to Mexihellhole until the wall is paid for? How about we cut off all social services to illegals so they self-deport? That alone would pay for the wall many times over.
Irresponsible is a governor more concerned about hurting the feelings of illegals and their enablers than protecting our borders.
To him, being labeled as a "Republican" doesn't make one immune to justified criticism.
He has already said and proved, over and over, that he counter-punches and does so with vigor....
My Advice for Trump: Don't Change
The GOP should be alarmed that its base has left them and gone to Trump.
Useless trash like Martinez and virtually every other elected member of the GOP is why that has happened.
Anything that “alarms” the GOP is probably good for the country.Alarm bells only go off for the GOP to their right, never to their left.
What if it was at the governor’s request?
Because she’s “Latina” she cannot be criticized, and because she’s a woman she cannot be criticized. That doesn’t sound like equal treatment to me. Trump has criticized a lot of people, most of whom richly deserved it.
Oh noes!!! The GOPe’s favorite quota queen isn’t going to be the VP for Trump
