Now that he has very likely secured the GOP presidential nomination, Donald Trump has turned his attention to a running mate. Trump brought Ben Carson on board to help him decide on a VP nominee, but don't count on it being Carson. The former Republican presidential candidate announced Thursday he was taking himself out of the running. When asked who Trump was considering, Carson reportedly mentioned a wide candidate pool that could include Democrats.
Carson told The Wall Street Journal, "We would consider people who are Americans and who put America first." If that includes a Democratic name, the chances of Trump bringing together an increasingly divided GOP party seem almost impossible.
In fact, who Trump ends up choosing will be important, considering Paul Ryan's remarks about needing the presumptive presidential nominee to unify the GOP. It's entirely possible that, once he gets to the Republican National Convention in July, the delegates won't accept his choice.
Trump's campaign manager Corey Lewandowski doesn't think that's likely, though. "I cant imagine any scenario where the GOP nominee doesnt have the opportunity to pick his own vice-presidential candidate," he said.
Regarding his decision to drop out as an option for vice president, Carson said: "Im not interested in doing that for a number of reasons. I dont want to be a distraction. Im sure you remember how crazy the media was about me, I dont want to be a distraction, its too important a time in our life."
In March, Trump's former rival endorsed him for president. "Theres two different Donald Trumps," he said at the time. "Theres the one you see on stage and then the one thats very cerebral, sits there and considers things very carefully."
No, she do what the Hindu
No, no Clint Eastwood is eternal.
Well if he picked a dem running-mate, you can be sure something will happen to him. This can’t be possible. I wonder if this is why Manchin endorsed him. No, can’t be possible. He may be able to gun some people down on 5th Avenue, but choosing a dem running mate? That’s just too much.
Jim Webb has been suggested by pundits. Millions of names will be mentioned in the next three months.
Scary how pretty she is. Trump puts a lot of stock in looks.
Taking the old big names off the leadership ranks in the Republican party is going to open the doors to new people that otherwise would have to wait years to get into a position of authority.
So along with a VP spot, Trump will also in a position to name the new Chairman of the Republican Party, somebody who can direct traffic on campaign contributions and guide the rules that the state parties live by.
Chairman Ivanka, anybody?
There is some little restraint on who Trump can pick for VP.
Theoretically, Trump doesn’t pick the nominee. He/she is nominated by a convention delegate and then voted in by a majority of delegates.
So he can nominate anyone he wants and the convention will rubber stamp his nominee — up to some limit. If he would nominate Bernie, just to pick a ridiculous example, the delegates would revolt. Remember, lots of these delegates are pledged to vote for him, but they’re not pledged to vote for his VP pick.
So there is some restraint on who he can pick, but Trump has tremendous room. Would the convention accept a Democrat? That might be tough.
Dems like Zell Miller are as rare as hen’s teeth these days.
Then as for David Clarke, the only reason that he’s a Dem is because that is the only way he can win in Milwaukee County. From sheriff to VP is quite a jump. I would still like to see a role for him in a Trump administration, though. FBI? The good sheriff though is still one of the few present day Democrats I can see that love this country and want to see a return to the rule of law.
Allen West - of not VP, SecDef. The 10 years out of the Army has past, so he is eligible. It would be good to see a warrior in that position again, after too many social engineer Pajama Boys.
This is insane. Trump would loose most of those who are going to vote for him if he picked a democrat for VP.
He would not last a year in office before he is assassinated by some lefty, just to put Sanders in charge.
Something is very wrong with his brain. Dr. cure thyself.
This is the dumbest piece of Anti-Trump crap that I’ve seen in a while. He got the nomination, so you guys can stop with the BS.
Carson says: “We would consider people who are Americans and who put America first.”
Somehow, the WRITER of this crap piece extrapolated from that the idea that Democrats would be included and wrote a RedState style FUD piece about it.
It’s depressing to see how many ‘conservatives’ either aren’t very bright or aren’t very good at this whole politics thing.
He wants a politician familiar with Congress. His VP needs to be a southerner to balance the ticket. Should be a loud mouth that loves to intimidate with lawsuits and is accustomed to running scams, also being a certified misogynist and leftist is a must. There’s only one choice: Alan Grayson.
It’s gonna be a Trump-Sanders ticket, but I still think Trump-Andrew Dice Clay complements Trump better.
(Just think of the Trump-Dice bumper stickers...)
Jim Webb is my first choice for Trump's VP. A legendary Marine combat leader, Webb is tough as nails and smart as a whip. He oversaw Reagan's massive rebuilding of the fleet Navy Secretary. Webb warned that the Gulf Wars would bankrupt America and destroy our will and ability to fight, and history proved him right. He refused to support the Bush wars, left the GOP and served one term in the Senate as a Democrat from Virginia. A Trump-Webb ticket would decimate the Democrats in November and VP Webb would provide life insurance for Trump. America might have passed the point of no return, but if we have any chance left we must elect men of action to reverse our steepening decline.
He did also vote for Obamacare and all of the rest of Obama’s first term agenda though.
I’m kinda tired of the war heroes coming home and becoming traitors to their country in elected office. Can’t we be done with that?
Jim Webb first off is way to pro choice. He has a reputation of having a big ego wanting things to go his way. He would be a wild card that could go so wrong. Their is only one choice and it is Rubio, not a democrat subversive or some unknown. And for all those who want a women. Trump needs to be in the spotlight, picking a women will automatically make it a shared spotlight like a marriage. And where would Melania go then.
You make some solid arguments.
Rubio adds nothing of value to the ticket.
