AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - In finishing the Republican presidential race well ahead of Donald Trump's other rivals, Ted Cruz is likely to be a leading GOP voice for the foreseeable future.
Less clear is whether Cruz harnesses that clout to help Trump win the White House or whether he simply solidifies his place as a champion of conservative causes, Senate troublemaker and star of Texas politics.
Cruz is being talked about as a leader of the national conservative movement, and he has an unmatched organization in Texas....

His very public mental breakdown was embarrassing to watch and will be hard for him to overcome.. Ever.
I live in Texas...son.
Ted will never again get my vote for any office.
Amen and ditto!!
I don’t know ONE person that I work with, go to church with, that I am related to, friends/neighbors with that support cRuz. They didn’t like him before the primary, and they dang sure don’t like him now.
I have yet to see ONE single cRuz sticker or yard sign in the greater Houston area....and this is where his Prez campaign HQ is (was) located.
“This idiot would be lucky if he keeps his Senate seat, considering how willing he was to scuttle this election in the Democrats and GOPes favor!”
On the contrary, I submit to you that Cruz provided Trump a political education, that without it Trump would never beat the Clinton machine or get through the GOPe. Cruz taught Trump the necessities of having a great ground game and negotiating the web of rules and delegate gathering.
There was no one else in the field who could have pushed Trump to up his game, Like Cruz or hate Cruz, Trump needed Cruz and so far it has paid off. Trump lives off adversity and no other candidate could do wha Cruz did. Whether inadvertently or not, Cruz led Trump through the mine field, showed him the GOPe shenanigans and prepared Trump for what is to come in Cleveland and beyond.
No insults Nathan, just the facts.
Researchers using FOIA on Rafael Cruz discovered results contradictory to the polished Cruz story fed by the campaign. Having interviewed a few old Cubans who were freedom fighters, Cruzs past is very troublesome.
Rafael B. Cruz fails to deny that he is the man passing out the pro-communist literature with Oswald.
The Cruz family origins are murky. The Wiki story line doesnt match his official records. Here are their known records, lots of red flags! Enough for a Communist May Day Parade!

All of these inconsistencies are entangled with Cruz’s citizenship status. No jus solis and No jus sanguis.
Both parents had become Canadians living in Canada with a business in Canada and a child, Ted, born and being raised in Canada. There is one positve: Calgary is a much better hometown than Havana.
Do what you want.
You will suffer the effects of your own idiocy, and so will your children.
And so will theirs.
So then you are a #NeverCruz guy similar to the way some unfortunate people are #NeverTrump?
Cruz would have to remove all doubt in Texan voter’s minds that he’s one big blackmail-able hot mess if he ever expects to get reelected as State Senator. Not to mention the dirty tactics he used for months in his campaign; his extremist Dominionist belief system; and his irritating preacher-approach on the stump.
But worst of all was his lack of good judgment. He could have had it all if he had reconciled himself to be Trump’s VP, as Trump was insinuating. But either he didn’t have enough good sense to see it, or he had handlers who refused to let him do it. If you have any other explanations for all of the above that make sense, then sure, I may consider voting for him again his next time around. Maybe.
Cruz got 44.2% of the vote and you are assuming that the 27% of the people who voted for Trump didn't also like Cruz.
Agree 100%. Cruz was the only one scrappy enough to fight. And Trump learned how dirty politics can get and it will get much worse with Hellary. The rest of the 17 were to easy to ditch. Cruz was resourceful and tenacious, we got to admire that. And he rode Trump’s coattails and allowed him to knock out all 15.
However, without the millions of dollars of super PAC money, his game would be impossible to play. Everyone is in that boat, and if you don’t cut deals and sell your soul, you don’t get to play in the big game. That is 21st century politics.
I would posit that despicable behavior was also exhibited by the party itself, where all manner of elected and former elected officials, as well as party apparatchiks, came out against a candidate, as opposed to the normal coming out in support of the candidate.
I know that Trump did too much shooting from the hip - leveling accusations for which there was not a plausible line of reasoning in support. I also know that his behavior toward Cruz is considered over the top by many. My own observation is that neither Trump nor Cruz acquitted themselves well in their matchup, but for differing reasons.
At the start, I stated that either Trump or Cruz would be acceptable to me. At the end of the primary contest, I still find that either could be acceptable, although I find Cruz diminished because of his employment of all the political tactics that have tarnished politics for too long. I have fears over Trump, mostly due to his bombastic campaign rhetoric, as opposed to his considered policy positions.
In the end, we will all need to individually take a deep breath, consider our souls, decide if Trump is an acceptable (as opposed to preferable) candidate, and further decide whether we would prefer Hillary over Trump, should the decision on acceptability come down on the negative side.
Never.
Texans won’t be fooled twice.
Trump cited, of all sources, THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER alleging that Cruz consorted with Oswald. Previously The Enquirer alleged, again falsely, that Ted Cruz had conducted an affair with five women. We all know that the publisher of the disreputable rag was a buddy of Donald Trump's. Any man worthy of the office of president of the United States would verify such a shocking allegation from a better source prior to going on national television. The lapse was unforgivable except by the Cruz family upon the apology of Donald Trump.
If you don’t live here in Texas, please to do presume to speak for those of us that do. Cruz hurt himself badly by running a sleazy campaign. There is blood in the water and someone like a Dan Patrick might just decide to take Ted on. If Greg Abbott takes on Cruz, Cruz is out of a job. I think Patrick beats him too.
How are things in Germany? Maybe you should worry about that and leave our election to us here in the USA.
Ted Cruz isn’t running for office, so yeah, I’m not voting for him.
If he chooses to to run for office in the future, he won’t have my support.
That clear enough?
You might call it missionary work among the Philistines.
Ted Cruz isnt running for office, so yeah, Im not voting for him. If he chooses to to run for office in the future, he wont have my support. That clear enough?
Very clear.
Consider the question mark removed from my previous question.
“Cruz got 44.2%”
44% in your home state is pathetic no matter how you slice it. There is no way to know how many if any Trump voters would support Cruz. We do know that the majority of primary voters in Texas that voted in the Republican presidential primary would be willing to support someone other than Cruz perhaps in a future senatorial primary race.
For a ‘favorite son’, Ted has pretty soft support in Texas. He didn’t even win 50% of the primary vote here.
In fact, it’s been said that Ted won his home state with the lowest percentage of any Republican candidate in the modern era.
Who knows whether or not he can repair his weakened image with Texas voters before he’s up for re-election. We’ll see.
Perhaps many of those 27% like Cruz but simply think that Trump is terrific.
