New information is surfacing about Mitt Romney and his 2016 plans following the 2012 presidential candidate's nationally-covered speech on Thursday morning.
The former Mass. Governor and Republican nominee for President spoke out against Donald Trump, calling the Republican front-runner a "phony" and "fraud." He urged Republicans to unite behind another candidate, yet declined to indicate which candidate he would be supporting.
An in-depth look at Romney's campaign finance activity, however, shows that the former candidate may be gearing up to take another shot at the White House.
In late January and early February of 2016, Romney's campaign finance entities, which by law are subject to FEC regulations, were both reactivated with amended campaign statements.
FEC records indicate that Romney's former campaign committee, Romney for President, and Romney's affiliated PAC, Romney Victory Fund, were both reactivated earlier this year, making them legally able to solicit donations and organize for his presidential campaign.
The above FEC documents can be found on the FEC websites here and here.
The Christian Times Newspaper spoke with several campaign finance professionals and campaign finance attorneys to further understand this move.
One told us that Romney "would only be making these changes" if he in fact "was going to run for President in 2016."
Another, a former McCain finance staffer indicated that this evidence shows "without a doubt" that Romney has plans to run as a Republican this year.
In the days and weeks following Romney's Trump-bashing, it will be interesting to see whether or not the 2012 candidate makes any further moves to run in 2016.
Romney is about Romney. There is no room for Cruz or anyone else.
Empty chair II.
Carl Rove. McConnell. Ryan.
It’s a movement of the people, by the people and for the people and if we let them tamper with the process, it shall perish.
Bkmrk.
Do they not see all of us out here supporting the other candidates while they openly get ready to wipe out our choices during the primary voting? They are abandoning their voter base over the Cheap Labor wing of the Republican Party. Trump will almost certainly build a wall and that is the antithesis of the open border/cheap labor crowd that backs the GOP establishment elite.
Why do you think that they now have Kasich winning in Michigan? They plan to steal it from Trump and they will claim it is because Trump is underperforming.
Their intent is to make it so that no candidate can get the required amount of delegates.
They can play this game out for a long time until it is too late for Trump or someone to run third party.
Mitt walks in on the 2nd ballot at the convention and takes the nomination.
Good one!
Let’s agree that both candidates are despised by the GOPe and are outsiders. I am all in for Trump, but Cruz is not establishment. They despise him just as much. Both Cruz and Trump have their faults, but for the sake of our country, we really need to take out that slimy, underwear on his head Romney and let the voters decide.
Exactly.
The GOP is handing it all to Hillary(one of the most dishonest, back stabbing, corrupt, incompetent females ever in politics). She should be in prison.
My ABC motto may be SORELY tested this year.....
He wants to lose again.
Romney, Cruz, Rubio and to some extent, Kasich along with the GOPe and the media is running an all out war against Trump. Yes, Cruz is right there with his lies also. Not one of them has stepped up to put a stop to this.
It should be crystal clear to everyone that Trump is feared by all and they must stop him before he learns the extend of corruption and treason in Washington.
To all of you Cruz supporters, wake up and look around. Your boy is in the middle of this also.
IIRC, the GOP can alter rules, beginning the day before the convention.
Romney is likely reviled even more than Jeb Bush...I don’t think the GOPe has yet figured out how angry people are...and they are going to throw anything and everything at us. Betcha Kasich joins him...I don’t think Cruz will...it would destroy his future.
Right there with you. Republican party is dead.
