As Donald Trump continues his pundit-defying dominance of the national polls, with early primaries just days away, the once-unthinkable has become all too thinkable: Could Trump actually pull this off? Could he become president?
I'm going to stake out a firm answer: no. Absent extreme and unlikely circumstances*, Trump will never be president.
Jack Shafer argues that Trump's success so far is a "black swan" event, an unpredictable and unrepeatable concatenation of improbable circumstances. That sounds about right.
But just because some political rules and conventions have been violated doesn't mean they've all vanished. Just because Trump makes no sense doesn't mean common sense has become worthless. One black swan does not foretell a flock of black swans....

Well, Bernie is a lightweight. He don’t know how to fight. Vermont is pretty laid back.
Of course, being the commie he is, he expects his minions to fight for him.
Who is hated more will lose the election. People like hate and hatred will dominate the election when all is said and done.
Kind of like a wimp. Just wants to give stuff for free to people who do not earn it.
Cruz never win as President anyway. Lots of people love Trump and lots of people hate Trump. Not sure how this will play out.
Hillary = inevitable
Liberal logic.
Well, there’s a lot of hate out there for the status quo - The beltway boys club.
I want the applecart overturned. No, scratch that. I want it busted to pieces and then fed into a wood chipper and ground to dust. And I want that dust turned back into the soil and the soil salted so it’s like will never grow there again.
I’m in the “Pissed Off” Party.
That’s not hate. But I’m willing to learn.
Just angry white men he appeals to. Yet the picture of him signing autographs at a rally shows six people in focus. Four are white, one is African American, Actually mixed race like Obama, and the other is Asian.
As a side note all those old white men where really five woman and one guy. None looked especially old either. None where as old as the Democrat Candidates.
The same might have been said about candidate Obama in 2008.
The opposite of Obama is who? Obama destroyed the Democrat Party in 7 years. Hopefully, Republicans will stay together enough to get the White House back and not lose Congress.
I don’t hold out much hope for the current Republican Party, as long as it holds on to it’s current leaders and backers.
And I’ve been a republican since I was a sperm. It really pains me to say that, but there it is.
I do believe, if he were still alive; my father would agree with me.

A lot of those hating Trump at the moment are from the right. Their self-righteousness will give in to pragmatism once the lines are clearly drawn.
Those on the inane liberal left will always hate Trump but that is a given as they hate everything.
Trump is attracting people across all political, racial and social lines. The truth be told, the majority of the people are pissed off at both parties. Trump is the person they are attaching themselves to to fight back. I am too.
I just wonder if he’s really in it or just another chess piece being moved about by the Unseen Hand.
Professional politicians have created the present dilemma. Shall we continue or try something new?
VOX is a liberal rag over on Yahoo that has been ranting against Trump for the past 3 months. Worthless and biased...
I vote for new. Old hasn’t been working out so well for us, so what the hell.
There is one and only one reason the Republicants hold a majority in Congress: Obama. While the current batch of Republicants kneel down and kiss the butts of third worlders at every opportunity it has nothing to do with their current cushy gig.
Precisely zero of the polls I have seen show that.
