Trump's Debate Boycott Throws Fox News Into Chaos
New York Magazine ^ | January 27, 2016 | Gabriel Sherman

Trump said he would host his own Iowa town hall to raise money for veterans and let other networks cover it. One clear sign of the gravity of tonight's development is the sense of confusion that is swirling throughout Fox. The network is split between Kelly's allies like Brit Hume and conservative anchors that are furious that Kelly - who graces the cover of Vanity Fair this month - has become the face of the network. An anchor fumed that Kelly hosted Michael Moore on her program tonight and the lefty filmmaker defended her against Trump. "That would be like Rachel Maddow laughing along with Charles Koch as he trashed Hillary Clinton!" the anchor said. One producer speculated that Fox could go "National Review" on Trump and start attacking him...

No matter how loudly GOP candidates complained about Fox's loutish politics in private, none risked taking Ailes on in public for fear of losing access to this crucial constituency - until Trump, that is. Even if Trump's boycott backfires, he's already achieved a historic victory: Exploding the myth that a Republican candidate can't openly challenge Fox.

Many people are dropping cable news altogether and are getting news from the internet.

Having said that, CNN is doing a much better job these days than Fox News. Fox News is too agenda driven. It’s only bearable to watch if your agenda coincides with theirs.

With CNN on the other hand it seems that they couldn’t care less about the outcome of the political process. They only care about ratings.

-- Fox should postpone the debate. --

Why should Fox back down? When Rand Paul cried in his corn flakes, the debate went on without him.

-- In the meantime Cruz should continue to challenge Trump to one on one debates anytime...anywhere. --

Agreed. Rubio and Jeb can too. The only "loser" becomes the RNC and those who agree to one-on-one, because according to the "rules of the debates," any candidates who engage in one-on-one outside of the scheduled debated, is excluded from the remainder of the debates. They all signed on to that.

A candidate can sit out without any penalty. But having "debates" outside the party's debate structure results in debate exile. Cruz knows this, and he knows Trump won't accept an offer for a one-on-one debate.

I wish they'd get back to the issues.

Looking beyond this election, this is EXCELLENT.

The perfect debate would have no moderator whatsoever. Just a timer — candidates choose their own topics.

The happy medium achieved here is that a politician need not endure a moderator he/she mistrusts.

Trump’s courage advances civilization once again.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews was amused Tuesday by GOP front-runner Donald Trump’s announcement that he’d boycott a primary debate hosted this week by Fox News, and laughed at the notion that people would tune in to watch a faceoff between “two Cubans.”

“Who is going to watch a debate between the two Cuban guys?” the longtime cable news host asked.

His question was in reference to Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., both of whom are Cuban-Americans.

“Who is going to watch a debate between Rubio, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. Who cares?” Matthews continued. “You know they’ve been fighting in this interleague fight over who is the hawkish guy, or whatever. Who is going to watch that Thursday night?”

Trump has instantly turned the “main” debate into the undercard debate.

I knew this was bigger than mere distaste for an on-air slut. I knew there was a grand scheme behind the ultimatum.

Poll numbers are the best indicator — debates might have helped Cruz reach Top Two, but not enough to get him over the top nationally.

Still, those two ought to debate each other head-to-head, no-holds-barred, no moderator, fair-time — computerized time allotments.

What is incredible is that Megyn Kelly is proud of her first question attacking Trump!

Almost 100 Million people out of work and $30 TRILLION debt forecasted (by the CBO) and she’s asking about Rosie O’Donnell?

Are they any adults at FOX? I know it’s RINO Central, but just a little good judgement would go a long way.

She is a political whore. A TV slut.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ART OF THE DEAL !!!!!!!

For those who think he would roll over to Establishment demands — THIS is ‘Art of the Deal’.

This is what a Trump veto threat would be like.

This is what a Trump foreign trade ultimatum would feel like.

He wants his ultimatums to have TEETH.

That’s good diplomacy.

That’s good budget negotiations.

That’s good legislation negotiations.

It’s tough. It’s intimidating.

It’s what has been MISSING in the ‘G’ OP.

I understand you are mad at Fox right now, we all have been, but to suggest CNN is not "agenda driven" might be taking it a little far.

CNN has one up spot, it often has access to areas that don't allow FOX news to report (middle east areas trust liberal pandering CNN reporters more than FOX). But when it comes to journalism, CNN panders like the rest.

I would like Trump supporters to go back to the first FOX debate and look at each first question asked to each candidate. Tell me who got a softball question? None of them, but only Trump complained.

Look at the last debate. Cruz got two very cruel question right at the start of the debate. Nobody here at FR complained, no Trump fans said "Cruz got treated wrong". Why is that?

The man is wrong. You think Obama would have allowed any one in the media to disrespect him like this. He avoids Fox for the most part.

I don’t think he was going to skip the debate...It’s the usual pre debate hype. IT would have been stupid for him to skip it...

But with the despicable press release from Fox he can’t back down now.

This is great... NRO dumps him, now FOX...this is good for ten points in the national elections amongh dems and indys

And then there was her “any word from God?” question for Cruz.

I thought her fake eyelashes were impressive, though, they made a real statement.

Ted Cruz embarrassed himself by getting caught in his lies, claiming the natural born citizen controversy was required the parents of a natural born citizen to also be natural born citizens.

If that were the case then he just announced to the whole world that he isn't qualified for the office and it didn't even register to him that he did it.

One on one debates are against RNC rules.

Equal time for all candidates is required.

Well, he’s already starting to run to the Left and go back to his real roots as a Democrat, so you have a point on him picking up some their support. Maybe he and Hillary can run on the same ticket.

Trump is a fake and a fraud. Let the girls paint their lashes. Stick to the issues and the consequences. Trump is a pragmatic opportunist. His son in law owns and runs the ultra liberal New York Observer for crying out loud. He will appoint liberal SCOTUS judges who will seal the death of the Republic. His so called Christianity is so strong that his kids converted to Judaism, and not the biblical kind either. He’s a phony conservative folks. Look out!

It is another Ttump master-stroke. There will be more.

Some Trump supporters are casting this as a good defensive move. Why risk a debate mistake when you are ahead.

But this is offense, not defense, with risks of its own, but risks that Trump has more control over. And it has the element of surprise.

Trump will now win easily in Iowa.

There is now the possibility of a Trump landslide in Iowa.

Trump is not TALKING about what he can do. He is DOING.
