Atlanta Ted Cruz praised Megyn Kelly in a gaggle with reporters Satuday, but declined to say anything negative about Donald Trump or address the comments Trump made about Kelly.
That was a decision for RedState to make, Cruz said of RedState Gathering host Erick Erickson disinviting Trump from the event.
I think every candidate should treat everyone else with civility and respect. Thats the standard I try to follow, its a standard I hope all of us aspire to. I also think that were not gonna solve the problems in this country, were not gonna defeat the Washington cartel by obsessing over the politics of personalities. This is about real challenges facing the American people. This is about bankrupting our kids and grandkids, defending the bill of rights, and restoring Americas leadership in the world. Thats where my focus has been and its where I intend to keep it.
Asked to directly address the comments, Cruz praised Kelly, calling her a terrific journalist.
I think she does a great job; I think she did a very good job moderating the debate, he said. And Im not gonna engage in the back and forth on personalities.
And with that, Cruz shamelessly changed the subject.
Let me give you a story that is infinitely more important than the momentary bickering between different political candidates, which is what has happened with Gen. Soleimani, Cruz said, and continued to discourse on the subject for several minutes.
Cruz has been perhaps the most reluctant of the GOP field to criticize Donald Trump. His response to Trumps comment that McCain was not a war hero was similar to his response today: Cruz praised McCain, but declined to say anything about Trump or his comment.
Cruz reached out to Trump and met with him in July. If Trump were to leave the presidential race at some point, many of supporters might choose to back Cruz. Asked Saturday if he was seeking to woo Trumps voters, Cruz said he was seeking to win over every other candidates supporters.
Megyn was one of the first to have Cruz on her show and interview him some time back. Cruz knows she was civil to him and let him speak to voters. I wouldn’t expect him to bad mouth her because she attacked someone else.
Cruz is just too mature for any of this. I wish he could be elected but the Repubs and Dems will never allow that.
I love Cruz but Trump isn’t worth $10 billion because someone schooled him on “class”.
You don’t send a pit bull to obedience school if you expect it to win a dog fight.
1. It's boot camp for the cadidates. If you can't handle hard questions you shouldn't be in the race. These questions are nothing compared to the experience in store for them when the true leftist believers in the MSM get the chance to question them.
2.CNN is going to host a Democrat party debate in October. If they toss a bunch of roses and marshmallows at Hillary, Bernie and whoever else then they will rightly be slammed for not having the b*lls of Fox. .
Bet on it.
They WILL indeed toss roses and marshmallows at Hillary, then everyone will praise CNN for asking the "tough" questions.
It’s called picking and choosing your battles and battle fields.
Ted Cruz surely took Mitch McConnell to the woodshed.
Diplomatic. And classy. And focused on the issues.
It's the way Reagan would've handled it.
Kelly was out-of-line. Trump's response was out-of-line -- leading to distraction from the issues.
Which is the liberal media's real purpose.
Think about it...
I don’t get it. I’ve dated much nicer looking women, and I’m a big fat schlub.
I watched it live. It was a powerful speech. Ted Cruz energized them.
Have you just discovered who Trump is? He’s been doing this for 40 years. Now, if you don’t like him that’s fine. But that is his style and he’s not going to stop doing it because some folks think it’s in bad taste. Personally, I enjoy this street fighting. Sometimes it’s OK to hit a girl.
If we get a Repub Prez, Cruz should be Solicitor General for the US; then on the Supreme Court one day. He was Solicitor General for the State of Texas and I don't think he will ever have trouble getting work that challenges him. He's not only brilliant, he is also the real deal. They hate him because of that.
Cruz is a class act.
You beat me to it. Presidential demeanor above the fray. Focus on the big picture, not on petty disturbances. It is called gravitas, so lacking in most of the candidates.
It might not be his time. A President Trump is going to need all the help he can get cleaning out the garbage that the US Senate has become. With his conservative principals and brilliant legal mind, Cruz might be important in the US Senate. I also suspect that being mentored by Senator Sessions and with him putting together a principled conservative voting bloc would work real well.
It's hard to imagine Trump wanting to be Pres for more than four years.
I gotta tell you, this is not the kind of look I appreciate in women. So harsh. Give me Grace Kelly any day over Megyn Kelly. Yuck.
The debate had two objectives. Firstly destroy Donald Trump with “Gotcha Journalism.” Secondly ignore Ted Cruz as much as possible and pretend Dr. Carson does not exist.
I will never forget Bill Oreillys interview with Barrack Obama. He wore out three pairs of knee pads in only 15 minutes. The contrast in interviews and debates is stark.
Fox News is GOPe. Megan Kelly is on an ego trip without bounds. Chris Wallace is just being Wallace, nothing has changed with him. Bret Bier disappoints me greatly. Kelly's questions will come back to bite her in the ass, which as an aside makes me want to be a question. :)
The most important thing to take from Fox's handling of the debate is this did not come from Wallace, Kelly or Bier. This came from the top down!!!!!!!!
ps
I am not a Trump supporter. Cruz is the man.
[Cruz keeps becoming more establishment and Kasich, a gritty, smart campaigner, for all of his flaws, could be the one to say and do the smart things and move up.]
How is Cruz becoming more establishment? I follow him closely and have seen no evidence of this. He is the very
antithesis of establishment. Cruz has been fighting the establishment since he arrived at the Senate in 2012. His book outlines some of that fight. He recently took the fight to the Senate floor by calling out McConnell, a move that made powerful political enemies.
Also, remember, Cruz is a conservative. Kasich is not.
Yes, Kasich will say the right things and he will make some smart moves. He is, after all, a politician. But he’s not the kind of fighter we need at this time and he is not conservative overall.
Here’s my careful, politic response to this latest attempt by the GOP-e to smear Ted Cruz: you and everyone at NR can fellate me, Alexis.
I don’t know how anyone could say Cruz is becoming more establishment. Did you not hear him in the Senate exposing Mitch?? What guts - only a strong conservative could do that. In addition, he is constantly berated and belittled by his Senior Senator from TX, the GOPe -John Cornyn.
I'm here in OH and fed up as everyone about it being impossible to be able to get around the cities and interstates because of all of the unnecessary, and many counter productive construction projects that benefit big donors. Meanwhile, billions of dollars sit in the state treasury while local towns and cities....where people actually live...have their budgets starved to the point where it's near impossible for them to provide local services. Too much tax money goes to the county and state, never to be seen again. (unless the Browns need a new $5 million scoreboard, etc)
So, yeah, he's not real popular. He won, massively so, against a flawed to the point of it being comical opponent. Kasich did it brilliantly. No campaign accusations went unmet, and he doubled down with a positive response about himself every time. As a campaigner, Kasich is smart and gritty. He's not afraid to campaign outside the Republican comfort zone.
That's why I say watch out for Kasich. He's long fallen from the conservative tree, but he knows the issues, and he knows how to win.
