To hardly anyones surprise, former Gov. Rick Perry was left out of the first Republican presidential debate on Thursday night.
Fox News, the network that will televise the Cleveland debate, announced its line-up of 10 GOP hopefuls on Tuesday, which is led by billionaire Donald Trump and includes Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, but excluded Perry, the longest serving governor in Texas history.
For Perry and the six other GOP hopefuls who didnt make the cut the consolation prize was an invitation to an earlier debate on the same stage. However, the second tier debate is set for 4 p.m. CDT, not on prime-time when the networks draw the highest number of viewers.
Perrys exclusion for the first debate had been anticipated by a number of political observers because his recent polling numbers were around 2 percent, compared to 20 percent or higher for Trump or even a steady 5 to 6 percent for Cruz.
Perry had two strikes against him, said Eric Herzik, chairman of the political science department at the University of Nevada at Reno.
One, the oops moment at a Republican presidential debate four years ago when he couldnt remember the name of the third federal agency he wanted to eliminate and two, he is no longer in public office, Herzik said.
He performed badly and he is no longer a sitting governor, thats what made him competitive Herzik said. Moreover, right now the Republican field is so crowded that nobody stands out.
As for Cruz, he is not ready for prime-time, Herzik predicted.
Many people criticized (President) Barack Obama for not having enough experience but Cruz has a lot less, Herzik explained. Hes been a senator for two years and now he is running for president.
At least Obama served four years in the (U.S) Senate and had been a state senator (for seven years in Illinois).
the author thinks obama’s experience was adequate but not cruz’s. Obama already set a low bar now he wants to move the bar for others
In a pig's eye!
Who the Hell is this punk or feeble writer?
Not even qualified to polish Senator's Cruz's shoes.
bump
Cruz has tons more experience than Obama in terms of experience that matters.
Herzik is a second rate Poli Sci prof at a third rate university. That the Austin desk of this rag needed to quote Herzik immediately disqualifies the message and characterizes it as not serious.
“Not even qualified to polish Senator’s Cruz’s shoes.”
Or even lick them, for that matter.
YES! I happily stand corrected!!!
THANK YOU!
But was Cruz a community organizer? If not then boo /sarcasm off
Enrique here is out of the Austin bureau. In Austin, you need a sieve to tell who’s a Texan and who’s from Moscow.
This guy makes it pretty clear, maybe.
;)
“To compare Mr. Obama’s resume to his [Cruz] is ludicrous, much less their documented educational backgrounds.”
Yes, but Obama knew billionaire terrorist William Ayers, who picked him out, brought him along, and launched him into thug Chicago politics. Add that he can read a heck of a teleprompter, it was a potent combination. No experience needed.
He sees the debate through pre existing bias. Back bencher state senator, or arguing cases before SCOTUS on behalf of Texas? Which takes more wherewithall?
Not just for Texas. Al Gore would’ve become president had Cruz not written that brief. It makes me shudder just thinking about it. He was even Boehner’s lawyer in that wiretapping case. He was a fireman that put out huge legal conflagrations for the big boys.
You can’t talk about Obama’s experience without mentioning ice cream scooping.
That counts for something, doesn’t it?
Bottom line is that Cruz has ‘Gravits’. The naked Emperor can only dream of.
Mooshelle wants to suppress any mention of ice cream in connection with Barack. We are all gonna die cuz we ate that extra scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Perry was left out for three good reasons. He doesn’t excite a broad spectrum of voters, he doesn’t speak well under pressure, and . . . um . . . I forgot the third reason.
Who in the hell is herzik?
Many people criticized (President) Barack Obama for not having enough experience but Cruz has a lot less, Herzik explained. Hes been a senator for two years and now he is running for president.

I realize reporters aren’t all that great in math, but I think this one is simply FLAT OUT LYING. Even reporters hoping to get a Bachelor’s Degree have to take at least one math class in college.
Obama was US Senator from 2005 to 2009 (4 years)
Cruz* will be US Senator from 2013 to 2017 (4 years)
(*if he wins)
The math isn’t that hard.
It's getting to be pathetic how they keep taking ineffectual swipes and never seem to be in touch with any form of reality.
