Trump may be setting up party for Cruz
The Sauk Valley Gazette ^ | July 31, 2015 | Richard Rowland Polo

While perusing the articles and stories one can find on the computer (my wife says I spend way too much time on this thing), and the posted comments related to the articles, I came across a comment concerning Donald Trump (imagine that) and his lack of qualifications to be the next president.

A poster had commented that Republicans can’t seem to get it right in their selection of candidates; notably, with Trump in the mix.

Deciding to have a little fun with this person, I pointed out that the Democrats hadn’t done such a hot job picking a candidate in the past two elections, either. I also pointed out that the president wasn’t all that qualified in the job department when considering his prior job experience.

After all, when all you have for a job recommendation for the highest office in the land is having been a community organizer, and junior senator in one of the most corrupt and bankrupt states in the country, that isn’t saying much.

I proceeded to explain to this person that Trump’s strategy is to continue building a large lead in the polls; then, call a news conference to announce he’s withdrawing from the race.

The only reason Trump entered in the first place, he explains, was to set the tone of the dialog. He recommends his followers get behind Sen. Ted Cruz.

Sen. Cruz breezes through the Republican primaries, defeats Hillary in the general election, and is now our new United States president. Wahoo.

The Reuters poll was an online poll. Those aren’t in consideration. He was also in 4th in the Rasmussen poll yesterday. He’ll be at the debate. Plenty of time to get traction. Newt and Santorum were both polling worse than Cruz last go around... Santorum was polling as bad as Graham. Not saying Cruz will win, but he probably will get a look, assuming he debates as well as advertised.

Cruz has many things. Not sure I would call one of them “charm”

For the life of me, I can't find any flaw in my logic.

Not surprised....but I can think of two major ones right off the top of my head......

I’d say he genuinely agrees with a lot of us here!

How are Trump’s debating skills going to crush Cruz? Trump has never debated before - he admits that. I assume he will just fly by the seat of his pants in the debates. He, to my knowledge, isn’t even honing debate skills. It will be interesting!!

I actually hadn’t considered him not being a possibility until I saw that Reuters poll. Fingers crossed, because I of course want him there—but it’s hard to overestimate the perfidy of the GOPe.

where do you get the idea that Trump has this massive appeal among the lo fo crowd? I think that’s absurd.

I really don’t understand he run as a republican. He has never shown any strong conservative leanings -

The same could be said of a number of Republican candidates.
Just because ¡Yeb! and the others claim to be conservative does not make it so. Anyone who advocates abandoning the rule of law is not conservative and that’s 3/4’s of the field.

Cruz is the only consistently conservative one in the bunch.

Yes or no....Would it be a good idea to use all the money we can to get rid of Boehner and McConnell supporters in primaries?

A Ronald Reagan comes along once in a lifetime. I think Mark is living in a wonderful, warm bubble of yesteryear and his time in the Reagan administration. Times have changed and this country has changes

I just love it when Trump supporters use establishment talking points to champion their "anti establishment" hero. I think it's precious. Rush likes to make fun of this thinking too....

I didn’t say there wasn’t SOME logic in your idea...there is...but there are a LOT of major flaws.

Please don’t assume that Trump is my candidate. I haven’t actually chosen one yet. He is in my top 3, but, I’m still on the fence. And, I do believe that a Ronald Reagan only comes along once in a lifetime. I don’t care who or what Rush makes fun of. I make up my own mind and make my own decisions.

Some 30 odd years later people seem to have forgotten or chosen to forget that Reagan didn't run an anger based campaign despite the fact that there was real anger in him and in the country. The difference was in the way he directed it and used it. (He didn't direct it at the voters)

To me, his 1980 nomination acceptance speech was a true masterwork. He directed his anger at government itself and reached out to all Americans to help fix it rather than making bold statements about what "I" will do.

Ronald Reagan Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speech - 7/17/1980

Yes Trump has wide appeal which is what is needed to get elected President. He will win the indies and a lot of Democrat votes if he gets the GOP nomination.

Teddy Roosevelt had the same blowhard personality as Trump. So there is a precedant.

Okay, TIME is up. You refused to play, so take notes: Roosevelt had a bigger than life life.....not just a blowhard personality. Donald has a big life too, but it pales in comparison to Teddy's. Second, I doubt many people even knew of Teddy's blowhard personality....unless you think they saw it on Fox, on Twitter, on Facebook, on Free Republic, on Breitbart, on Rush, on Hannity, on MSNBC, etc etc etc.. Oh, wait.....NONE OF THOSE were around back then.

How will he do that....because he certainly won't do it the way Reagan did. Maybe he'll appeal to them on his universal health care idea...Canada style. Or maybe that he was with them in 08 cheering for Obama. Is that how he'll do it?

Get real. Much as I like Cruz, I don’t ignore the fact that even IF he were higher in the polls he would still be beholden to others for donations.

Trump is not. And he has the chops for the job of breaking up the Uniparty cartel in DC. After 8 years of Trump, the Country will be heading in the right direction again and although Cruz will still be donation dependent, the mindset of the Country will be different and people will want to donate to Cruz to continue the prosperity.
