Donald Trumps rise in the polls has caused heartburn for many people in the Republican Party, but it is the second-tier candidates in the presidential field who have been hurt most of all.
Candidates who have years of political accomplishment to their names are being starved of oxygen by the business tycoon. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, three-term Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are among the figures being sidelined by Trump and their annoyance is bubbling to the surface.
Earlier this week, Graham complained about the rules for the first major televised debate, which is less than a month away and will be limited to the top 10 candidates in the polls. At present, Trump would easily make the cut and Graham would not.
I think my voice needs to be heard on foreign policy, Graham said on MSNBCs Morning Joe. Its July 2015. I dont expect my numbers to be any better than they are. But I expect to be given a chance to take Donald Trump on, to talk about why Im different than Rand Paul, to challenge everybody on the stage and have them challenge me. So this debate construct, I think, is bad for our party.
Graham also slammed Trump for his controversial comments on immigration, saying that he was using his voice to demean and slander a whole group of people. And he insisted that debate rules that might exclude not just himself but also the sole female candidate in the GOP race, Carly Fiorina, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, showed Republicans being really dumb as a party.
Whereas leading contenders such as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker have the stature to avoid getting buried by the avalanche of Trump-related news and controversies, it is more difficult for lower-level contenders.
But even major figures in the GOP donor community who have no love for Trump now accept that little can be done to exclude him from the first debates.
I dont think you can step in to sideline him, said one major donor, John Jordan, who has previously been critical of Trump. The news organizations run the debates. Thats a done deal, the party cant intervene, and at some point you have to say theres good and theres bad in democracy.
Meanwhile, Trumps sheer media wattage blurs out other figures.
There are few people who are as good at getting media attention as Donald Trump, who is doing it either through flashy statements or downright demagoguery, said Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University.
The problem is that there are some second-tier candidates who might have a chance as underdogs or could become important national voices for the party, like a Lindsey Graham, who find that there is less interest in them as the cameras and keyboards are turned toward New Yorks real estate mogul and TV star.
GOP candidates irritation with Trump is becoming clearer every day. Former Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.) insisted that the businessman is not a conservative on a number of issues, adding all that glitters is not gold. Perry said he was offended by Trumps immigration comments.
Even former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, whose polls numbers assure him a place on the debate stage, is evidently feeling some annoyance.
Last week, Huckabee told Fox News Radio that while Trump was not hurting the Republican field, I wish I was getting as much attention as he is, because anybody getting that much attention certainly is going to soar in the polls.
Earlier this month, Huckabee told CNN he was more interested in discussing his own views on immigration than getting in this battle of are we with Trump or against Trump?
Candidates such as Huckabee desperately need media attention if they are to ascend to the top tier of candidates alongside Bush, Walker and Rubio. And that is less likely, experts say, as long as Trump commands center stage.
News resources are allocated to where news is likely to happen and that means to Trump, because he is likely to say something outrageous, said Cal Jillson, a professor of political science at Southern Methodist University. He soaks up press assets, both in terms of attention and in terms of column inches in the newspapers.
For now, there may not be much the second-tier candidates can do about it. Criticisms of Trump either slide off him or attract a mocking response from the man himself.
Addressing a rally in Phoenix last weekend, Trump had Bush in his crosshairs: How can I be tied with this guy? Hes terrible. Terrible, he said.
A new poll released Tuesday put Trump at the head of the Republican field. The survey, from Suffolk University and USA Today, gave him 17 percent backing, 3 points ahead of Bush, his closest rival.
Donors such as Jordan argue that even candidates who are lagging ought to acknowledge that there is something beyond pure celebrity to Trumps rise. Jordan argued that Trumps scorn for politicians and his bombastic populism is proving attractive to Republican voters who are feeling the economic anxiety that, at the opposite end of the spectrum, pushes liberals toward the Democratic candidacy of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
It is incumbent upon the other [GOP] candidates not to concede that space, he said. They should be contesting ownership of that space with Mr. Trump.
Other experts argue that patience is the best strategy for those candidates who are being crowded out by Trump.
They have to continue on the premise that he will stumble and the public will weary of him, said University of South Florida professor Susan MacManus. They have got to continue to work at the grass roots right now. If they truly believe, they can win by waiting him out.
>>>At present, Trump would easily make the cut and Graham would not<<<
Is that a problem? LOL
To paraphrase Huey Long;
Sweep ‘em out Trump!!
A TOTAL SCREAM!
Separating the sheeple
The huckster is wishing he kept his gig at faux news about now.Graham just cant catch his breath.Poor baby.
The Cheap Labor Express is spending a fortune to crowd the field to nominate ¡Yeb!
The RNC must produce the amnesty candidate they’ve already been paid for.
¡Yeb! is the designated loser
I am not still not certain that Trump is serious. I am certain the Graham is not a serious candidate.
I don’t really trust Trump, and am not a fan of the idea of him as the nominee (a Cruz/Walker ticket sounds a whole lot better to me at this point).
That said, Trump is serving a useful purpose for the cause right now. He’s forced the GOP and some in the MSM to start taking a harder look at illegal immigration. He may not have put it in particularly artful terms, but he has made the issue resonate, and that is what counts. It is front and center in the public eye. And now, it seems he might be able to winnow down the candidate list in the GOP primaries.
I like both Bobby Jindal and Carly Fiorina, and regret they aren’t going to get a lot of air time under the setup. But it also means no-hopers like Pataki, and hamstringers like Graham (I’m convinced he’s only running to thwart Cruz in SC, and give the primary to Jeb) aren’t going to get disproportionate air-time (to their polling numbers) at the expense of candidates who the voters do want to see on stage.
All just MHO, of course.
The dogs of hell have been unleashed on Donald Trump.

Everyone should be allowed at the first debate. And then, for a $10 donation viewers should be allowed to vote for which 10 candidates they want in the next debate.
And then at the 2nd debate everybody can pay another $10 to vote again with the top 9 remaining.
And so on and so forth...until it comes down to the final two.
That is why we have polls. RCP averages all polls and it is a good indication of whom the voters consider top 10 candidates.
Not one mention of Ted Cruz. The MSN is gonna bury him by not mentioning him.
“Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, three-term Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are among the figures being sidelined by Trump...”
Actually they’re being “sidelined” by their own past histories of listening to Republican ‘advisers’ (most of them gay, by the way) who tell them to treat conservatives like CRAP, since conservatives, in the end, won’t have anyone else to vote for.
To put it in a way the media might better understand - if you’re a typical American wife who grows fat and treats skunks better than her husband, don’t be surprised if your husband skedaddles with the next 25 year old gorgeous chick he meets at work...and don’t bother blaming the chick - it’s not her fault.
“Jordan argued that Trumps scorn for politicians and his bombastic populism is proving attractive to Republican voters who are feeling the economic anxiety that, at the opposite end of the spectrum, pushes liberals toward the Democratic candidacy of Sen. Bernie Sanders.”
There’s good and bad to that statement. The good thing is that Jordan has figured out that Republicans NEED VOTERS to win, not just money. The bad thing is that he still thinks our problem is “economic anxiety”, which shows he’s TOTALLY OUT OUT TOUCH.
Our problem is the “transformation” (and Obama term) of this country due to OPEN BORDERS. Trump has tapped into that, Jordan, based on his words above, may not even think it bothers us.
I never saw this coming. When Trump entered the race, I originally thought, “what a buffoon”. He’ll get laughed off the stage, as unlikeable as Hitlery.
But he has shown some political savvy that none of the other candidates have, including my favorite, Cruz. He’s shown guts, moxy, humor and insight. Basically, since he has all that Fxxx Yxx money, he is beholden to no one, and he’s got some strong political instincts.
The herd needs culling in a big way.
I am getting kind of tired of hearing....”well, I’m certain he won’t win the nomination, but he’s serving a great purpose right now by bringing these issues to the forefront ....”
That’s not just serving a purpose — it’s called LEADERSHIP! We’re so dumbed down as a nation I’m not sure we even recognize it anymore!! Yes, he’s bringing the issues to the front ... He’s leading, from the front. He’s defining the issues ..... He’s offering solutions to them — It’s what they’re supposed to do!! To LEAD!
How desperately we need men like this at this time !! Go Trump!!
