JOHNSTON, Iowa Sen. Ted Cruz says whether or not South Carolina removes the Confederate flag from a state house memorial is an issue for the state to decide and that he sees both sides of the debate.
In an interview with The Washington Post on Saturday, Cruz (R-Tex.) said that he understands why people equate the flag with both racial oppression and historical traditions.
I understand the passions that this debate evokes on both sides, the GOP presidential hopeful said. Both those who see a history of racial oppression and a history of slavery, which is the original sin of our nation, and we fought a bloody civil war to expunge that sin.
He added: But I also understand those who want to remember the sacrifices of their ancestors and the traditions of their states, not the racial oppression, but the historical traditions, and I think often this issue is used as a wedge to try to divide people.
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, said Saturday that the flag should be taken down....

The Southern States Of Course were denied their rights to govern themselves guaranteed by the Constitution.
You don’t think the fact that they had just waged a four year rebellion had something to do with that?
.....................................................
The FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S Intrusion into the affairs of the southern states was the REASON for the “Rebellion!” The 10th Amendment was ignored then as it is now! The GUARANTEE of STATES Rights has been TRAMPLED by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT until it effectively NO LONGER EXISTS!
The FEDS are even trying to tell us what our children should eat for lunch, that they should not have food they like or ever eat a piece of candy. They are to be indoctrinated into the acceptance of ABNORMAL SEXUAL ACTIVITY and every other factor that destroys the MORAL Foundations of this country.
The RESISTANCE of the South is the beginning of the revolt in this country and 1865 did not end it. This very web site exists to provide a place of dissension for the citizen. WHAT in all reality has changed in the last 150 years? The FEDS are still running the show and the guarantees of the Constitution are being ignored! In fact, the Constitution means little to nothing to the Administration and the Democrats! They are busy destroying it where possible, and ignoring it the rest of the time. That goes for the RINOS as well.
IMHO the Battle Flag of the Confederacy has an honored place in the history of this country. Its meaning has been distorted until nobody knows the truth.
Intruding in what way?

Totally irrelevant. Blah, blah, blah.

It pretty much did, yeah.
This very web site exists to provide a place of dissension for the citizen.
Nobody here is calling for a rebellion.

More irrelevancy. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Well, almost nobody. But regardless, you should be free to fly the Confederate flag if you want no matter how poor your understanding of the history of the conflict is. Many people view it as a symbol of slavery. Be that as it may that doesn't give them the right to prevent others for honoring the flag regardless of their reasons. The Constitution gives the first party the right to express their anger. It does not protect them from what is angering them.
One can and do argue the causes of the civil war but citing Wiki is a poor start
But our next civil war will start for just two reasons
Weakness and stupidity

On THAT we agree!
AND MINE!
I guess compared to what?
Compared to where they came from if they were lucky enough to end up on smaller farms in North America versus Hispañola or Brasíl
Then they might have preferred it
Slaves were a higher investment for smaller farms and tended paradoxically to be cared for more like the master
On large grows there was more distinction between master and slave and the overseer was by default the master for all but house servants
Life expectancy in North America was higher than in tribal Africa
But those elsewhere in the Americas lived much harder as did everyone but the top
Just answering your question
No one ever really talks about this
People are afraid
I’ll tell you this being old enough to know several black culture eras
When I was young during segregation and don’t fool yourself it’s not just the south
The north is still replete with ghetto....segregated
Blacks were happier and friendlier and more cohesive and more religious
Being enslaved to bring a race of people’s to civilization is complicated and not easy
I’m very pessimistic at this point
For every Ben Carson there are 100s the opposite being fed hatred while America looks for sound bite fixes
Lots of links to real sources, including groups of historians included. But really—’twas only a defense of very basic history, without defensive Southern revisionism.
That’t it! I Cruz just lost my vote! There, fixed it ;-)
Are you from the South? How do you know it isn’t tradition?
Since this is Cruz’s strike two....I guess you liked Romney’s answer then?
What a clown you are...seriously, he gives the best answer and you criticize it. Tell us, Molly, who do you REALLY support?
You are right...
And many of those uneducated are right here on FR.
Go Cruz!
Naps, how did Walker handle this issue...or did he flip flop on this one like he did immigration?
I haven’t decided who I REALLY support as I have stated on numerous threads.
Yes, I am from a state deprived of it’s ability to leave the union by Lincoln who had the legislature arrested so they couldn’t meet and take the necessary steps to secede. Maryland was a border state. The Eastern Shore fought with the Army of Northern Virginia. The Western Shore fought beside Pennsylvania for the Yankees. The Eastern Shore was, is, and always will be traditionally southern.
I did NOT like Romney’s answer, nor any of the other RINO answers. NO outsider should even have a say about what the state does. I believe in the 10th Amendment. After all, that’s what the war was all about.
I also believe in the 10th Amendment and don’t go around calling people names like “clown.”
Correction: I also believe in the lst and SECOND Amendments and don’t go around calling people names like “clown.” I don’t have to call people names like Democrats and some Rep’s do.
Then what is your issue with Cruz’s answer if you claim to support the 10th?
Cruz took the easy road, that the state should decide. The state had ALREADY decided. Cruz gave a politicians answer instead of saying the state had already decided and it was nobody else’s business. I have followed and supported Cruz for years. Lately, he seems to be playing the political game and not putting his foot down and standing up against the crowd which is what I admired in him. His sell-out on the Fast Track proposal is the MAJOR strike against him and boy, was I ever disappointed. AND I do not swallow his excuses for the way he has voted. He swore to fight Obama and all he has done is hand him more power!
