JOHNSTON, Iowa – Sen. Ted Cruz says whether or not South Carolina removes the Confederate flag from a state house memorial is an issue for the state to decide and that he sees “both sides” of the debate.
In an interview with The Washington Post on Saturday, Cruz (R-Tex.) said that he understands why people equate the flag with both racial oppression and historical traditions.
“I understand the passions that this debate evokes on both sides,” the GOP presidential hopeful said. “Both those who see a history of racial oppression and a history of slavery, which is the original sin of our nation, and we fought a bloody civil war to expunge that sin.”
He added: “But I also understand those who want to remember the sacrifices of their ancestors and the traditions of their states, not the racial oppression, but the historical traditions, and I think often this issue is used as a wedge to try to divide people.”
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, said Saturday that the flag should be taken down....

Excuse me but it is YOUR version of history that is revisionist. The OTHER reason is his stand on TPA/TPP.
Why? Because it brings out a small group of Republicans and conservatives that defend what most Americans see as undefensible. God, replace the Confederate flag withe the Nazi flag, would it still be acceptable for Germans and people of German heritage to fly it?! This really is no different.
This is one of those bloody shirts to wave that always stirs up people and cost votes, and costs more votes than it gains anyone. 50 Years ago it cost Democrats, now Republicans. The party least deserving of a racist and insensitive label get one because of this flip.
Credible, electable candidates will have to disavow the Confederate flag, else sit back and watch Clinton or any Democrat walk into the White House by a landslide.

The question of slavery did not start with the Civil War.It was a major question during the writing of our Constitution, but was sidelined due to the need to bind the Southern States into the coalition which was to become the USA. The states of the south which would have declined to become a part of the new USA were guaranteed the right to leave the union should they see fit.
The Civil War started in 1861. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed the first of January 1863 and was an EXECUTIVE ORDER of Lincoln. It was NOT passed by congress. It was the decision of Lincoln as a WAR manoeuvre and put into effect under Lincoln’s WAR POWERS. ONLY the SLAVES of the States in Rebellion were effected. Slaves in States NOT in rebellion such as MARYLAND and DELAWARE (there were others)were NOT FREED. About 75% of slaves were effected, but not all. The slave owners of the South were not compensated for their losses. This guaranteed their financial destruction and we all know the rest about the NORTHERN CARPETBAGGERS who robbed and taxed the Southerners out of their heritage. The north did not need “fieldhands” as the north was an industrial economy while the south was an agricultural economy.
Abraham Lincoln was not an abolitionist as he held supremest views about “people of color.”
The 13th Amendment was not passed until the end of the war in 1865.
Slavery BECAME an issue but was not the originating issue of the war. The Southern States Of Course were denied their rights to govern themselves guaranteed by the Constitution. A Presidential Executive Order then, as now, divided the people.

States Rights was a matter of SELFgoverning the states WITHOUT the OVERBEARING DIRECTION and DEMANDS of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!(Taxes and Tariffs, etc.) The southern states were guaranteed their right to leave the union should they so decide at the time of signing the Constitution. A lot of good it did them. Are we not experiencing the SAME EVIL right now? WHERE have our freedoms gone? The Federal Government has taken over every facet of a person’s life and is now intent on turning us all into little Communist puppets on strings.

Hmmm... Read the Mississippi declaration of secession, I actually found their declaration quite deliberately said that they needed to defend their institution of slavery. Slavery was the issue, not neccessarily a moral issue, per se, but the fact was that the Southern states were dependent on it for some benefits economically, and yes, a number of states in addition to Mississippi seceded and wrote in the declaration of secession that they didn’t want their institution of slavery taken away.
Definitely true. We can have what opinions we want all day, but if we don’t do something that addresses the opinions of the national electorate, we simply lose the election. Any sensible candidate should voice disagreement and move forward from there.
Clearly slavery was a drivin force but when decision makers sat to discuss war,slavery was not the line in the sand,that is my point

Good lord I wish the right side had won that war. I can see the day when even owning a Rebel Flag will be considered a hate crime.

Well you started out pretty well but you kinda fell apart towards the end. The issue of slavery has been a bone of contention since even before our nations founding. A hundred years either way and it wouldn’t have had the impact that it had. But the flow of history was unrelenting and the end of the days of slavery were inevitable.
Over the 70-odd years since our nations founding the north sought only to contain the spread of slavery. The south not only wanted to expand slavery into every corner that it could but wished to implicate the north into the administration of the Peculiar Institution.
BTW: There is no “guaranteed the right to leave the union” and never was.
BTW2: You’re correct that the south had an agricultural economy but so did the north - even absent slave field hands.
I can see from other threads that you’ve been treated to several quotes from southerners that plainly stated that slavery was their reason for their “secession” but I can offer plenty more if you would like.
The north went to war to defend the union and ended up saving the slaves. The south went to war to defend slavery and ended up losing everything.

BTW4: The southern states weren’t denied any constitutional rights and the nation was divided at the behest of the slavocracy long before Lincoln issued the EP.

What WAS the “Typical Slaver?” Are you INCLUDING the SLAVERS of the NORTHERN STATES who were NOT included in the Emancipation Proclamation. ONLY the states in Rebellion were to be wiped out economically, the other slave owning states were “excused” from being forced to free their slaves. Seems that was a bit one sided, don’t you think? What happened to the “even” hand of justice? As I stated, the Emancipation Proclamation was an act by Lincoln intended to destroy the south. DESTROY being the key word. He was afraid England and France would aid the South.
What about the numerous BLACK Slave Owners? Do you call them “Slavers” also? What about the BLACKS who fought for the south? Some were “Slavers” and some were not. You can continue to cherry pick all you want, but your overview of the Civil War needs some serious readjustment. In order to correctly evaluate the history, you must take into account ALL the variable factors, which you do not! Why don’t you point out that the IMPORTERS of SLAVES were from the NORTH?
Dodge and Feint is the number one weapon of so called “history buffs.” Pick and choose those who agree with you, but ignore the rest! That is why our children do not know the history of the United States.
I also find it disgusting that nobody ever mentions the Indentured “Slaves,” who often died during their years of work.
