The Huntsville Times ^ | November 29, 2014 | Leada Gore

With the GOP poised to take over the Senate and strengthen its control of the House in January, all eyes are now turning to 2016's presidential race. And while Democrats have a single strong contender - paging Hillary Clinton - the Republican side remains up in the air.

The Hill recently listed what 16 possible presidential contenders in what one strategist described as the "most open field we've ever seen."

Here's the likely contenders in the class of 2016:

First String

Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) - One of the most recognizable names in the field, Paul he's comfortable in front of the camera and has the policy chops to back it up. It helps to be seen as a somewhat of an outsider, too.

Gov. Chris Christie (N.J.) - Christie is still a name to be reckoned with even as his image has taken hits from his own home state.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) - There's no better name recognition than "Bush." He has the family legacy on his side, but faces tough questions from GOP stalwarts on his immigration stands....

By the way, Rick Perry is not pro amnesty and would secure the border. He seems more a realist to me.

RINO Rick Perry is for a "pathway to citizenship" for ILLEGAL aliens and he has said so. But you keep right on supporting the pro-amnesty Republicans if that does it for you. I, like other conservatives, will continue fight against it.

And Ted Cruz is a conservative. Only liberals believe that to be "extremist". Thanks for identifying yourself as such.

Paul is too liberal and weak, the words floundering and searching for a position come to mind with him.

Rand Paul is the most similar to his man Mitt Romney.

Our religion is one of serving God and not Caesar.

When Christian politicans try to use the government for taking care of prisoners and the poor, they end up abusing them. It one of the well intended things paving the road to hell.

Huckster, in the name of Christian forgiveness, released violent Black prisoners. He was inspired by race bait. Those criminals, in turn, victimized innocent people. So how was he serving Christ to do this to people?

Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) I can do this

Gov. Chris Christie (N.J.) -uh-uh.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) LOL- uh-uh

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee Not in anyone’s lifetime

Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) - I can do this

Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) - Lightweight

Gov. Scott Walker (Wisc.) He has the cojoines to bring it all under control. Major contender.

Gov. Rick Perry (Texas) -Nope

Dr. Ben Carson - Meet the next Surgeon General

Gov. Mike Pence (Ind.) Nice guy can we find him a cabinet position somewhere?

Gov. Bobby Jindal (La.) Take out. No seriously, he would also be a strong cabinet contender.

Sen. Rob Portman (Ohio) We need leaders in the senate

Gov. John Kasich (Ohio) and in the governorships.

Trey Gowdey Meet our next Attorney General.

Now I would like them minus, Huckabee, Bush and Christie to meet together, put their egos aside and work on recapturing the white house and expand in house and senate. I actually don’t care about who is at the top of the ticket, make it a winner and make it a team effort.

Ah yes. Huckabee, or as he is generally known now “Lindsay Graham’s sycophant sock puppet.”

No thanks. Anyone close to McCain and Graham are too much in bed with Islam and with the open borders agenda.

Rand Paul is unelectable. The same social conservatives who refused to compromise and vote for Romney would also refuse to vote for Rand.

Securing the border is too strong a concern for Jeb, Paul, Perry, or Rubio to have a shot. Even if they could secure the nomination all four are way to far to the left on National Security.

I noticed Ben Carson really doesn’t like to ... Or can’t debate. He won’t make it very far anyway. Nice man though.

None of the above.

I don’t think any of them truly understand the crucial matter of the equal protection of all innocent human life.

No Ivy Leaguers!

It’ll be a 28 year run of Ivy League POTUS since Reagan retired.

We badly need a break.

Huckabee is NOTHING like McCain or Graham. It is fine to not like a candidate, but it is wrong to slander them.

Huckabee was one of the major campaigners for Graham this cycle. He hitched his wagon to that star and absolutely he will now reap what the harvest of that alliance.

His pathetic attempt to backtrack (in which he tried to employ the “depends on what the meaning of the word “is” is” strategy) when the meaning of his add was clear pretty much finished him with a lot of people.
