"Finally, after 40 years, our community made history today," Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen said on Tuesday night at Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Garden Grove. Nguyen's touching statement came as the Orange County Election Authority showed her leading in the Senate District 34 race at 62 percent of the vote by 10pm, with her Democratic rival Jose Solorio trailing behind at 38 percent.
This is the first time the United States has had a state senator of Vietnamese descent. The state's 34th District includes parts of Long Beach and Orange County.

I’m speaking of 20 years ago, perhaps the good doc wanted to be called something easy to remember in the days before there were many Vietnamese around.
Call me Win.
OK, got it.
Write your checks to Nguyen.
Ok, got it.
“The article is wrong. Since she is a Republican, she must be a white male regardless of other proof.”
...come to think of it, she does look like an elderly white man, in drag. I’m surprised that she (or should I say he) was able to pull this off.
“Asians, on average, have high IQs, smart enough to vote for logical reasons rather than emotional junque.”
They also like keeping more of their hard-earned money.
There is no such thing as a “Vietnamese American”
She was either born in Vietnam and is thus a Vietnamese, or she was born in America and is an American.
If she was born in Germany would she then be a Vietnamese German? I don’t think so, she would be a German.
It’s time to put and end to this stupidity.
So glad Solorio went down to defeat. My mailbox was full of his lies every day for months. Never before have I gotten so many political mailers for a single candidate. And the overall impression was that calling him a weasel would be insulting to weasels everywhere.
Typical MSM write up, It refers to her RAT rival but no mention that she’s pubbie or T party or indy.
Pretty close, but in the vagueries of the Vietnamese language some would even say Nguyen Cao Ky couldn’t get it right, being from the South.
‘Been there twice. Once in 68-69 with Americal, and again in 2000 with my then twenty-something daughter.
Beautiful place. Beautiful language. Wonderful people...particularly in the South.
“Maybe its a local thing, but here in CA, most Vietnamese that Ive known pronounce their names Nwen.”
I’m in Orange County, and I believe they say “n-wen” to help us gringos put the spelling with the sounds.
I recall one telling me “wen” is the correct pronunciation.
Generally I like them.
We go to a husband/wife dentist team - Vietnamese, and rabid anti-obaMao folks.
A Nguyen, Nguyen - eh?
She celebrated at a Mexican restaurant.
My son’s wife is Vietnamese. Her father was a flyer in the S. Vietnamese Air Force and was forced to escape in ‘75. He and most of his family, here in the U.S., are Republicans.
Another Asian American female won too. She was on the Staff of a top republican on Forigan Relations. The Dem run an ad attacking her for all the trips she went on including Mongolia that include a clip of a asian dude dancing in a big hat. It got blast by the press and look to backfire
I know quite a few Vietnamese and every single one of them work their tails off and are conservatives. They’ve lived/fought communism.
I didn’t see any mention in the article, had to google it.
