Incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS), who is facing an unexpectedly fierce challenge for re-election, warned Monday at a campaign stop that the United States is heading for "national socialism."
It's not clear whether Roberts intended to make a reference to Nazism or simply meant to invoke the run of the mill looming specter of socialism.
American Bridge, the liberal opposition research group that tracks Republican candidates, posted the video of Roberts's remarks at a Dodge City event.
"There's a palpable fear among Kansans all across this state that the America that we love and cherish and honor will not be the same America for our kids and grandkids," Roberts said, "and that's wrong. That's very wrong."
He lamented that people are "losing faith in their government" and that the government "is losing faith in our people. That is a bad situation to be in." He said he was running to change that dynamic.
"We have to change course because our country is heading for national socialism," Roberts said. "That's not right. It's changing our culture. It's changing what we're all about."
According to TPM's PollTracker average, Roberts trails independent candidate Greg Orman by 1 point, 39 percent to 38 percent.

The Washington Post's Philip Rucker asked Roberts about the line Tuesday.

For those keeping track, Roberts repeated "socialism" line
this AM. I asked him if he believes Obama is a socialist
and he said "yes."

He ain’t wrong and not voting against Hitler ain’t right.
Amazing foresight Mr. Roberts, now how about working AGAINST it instead of FOR it as you and the rest of the RINOs have?!
Fascist economics: government controls and calls the shots, means of production remain in private hands.
IOW, Obamacare.
He is wrong it is not “National Socialism” it is “International Socialism”...
Otherwise you cannot explain the Border issues...
How long has Roberts been in DC?
When did he first notice this “socialism”?
I thought RINO Republicans were supposed to primary as conservatives and then “move to the middle”....
someone page Karl Rove.....STAT
/s
We already have it. We’ve had it for a long time. I didn’t choose to be a part of Social Security or Medicare and they are socialism.
He and the rest of McConnells RINO’S enabled Obama and Reid
with their cloture votes on liberal bills.
No matter what Robert says, that is a fact.
Heading?
Yeah.
And there are idiots who want to reward such idiocy.
More like Global Socialism. There is no love of this nation among the left.
He is wrong it is not National Socialism it is International Socialism...
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
INTERNAZIS !!!
Grace, I honestly think that is brilliant. Well done.
He’s just saying this, though true, to play on the (valid) fears of his electorate.
After he wins, he’ll go on back to DC, and do what he’s been doing for years(virtually nothing) - while Senators like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and a few others do the heavy lifting to resist it.
“National Socialism” probably wasn’t the best term to use. I don’t know how much he follows history, but he essentially said that he’s opposing the NAZIs. (while arguably true, I think that using such language makes him look stupid) Thankfully, most of the MSM probably doesn’t know enough history to realize the error in what he was saying. As BAD as 0-Tard is, he ISN’T a ‘Hitler’. At least, not yet....
We’ve been on this road for decades. At least he finally admits it!
And he's going to keep admitting it right up to election day!
Well he has a lot of Mennonites in Kansas to appease. The pacifist will ALWAYS side with tyrants because they will do anything to avoid war. Look at the letters that Mennonite leaders in Germany sent to Hitler and the correspondence that Gandhi had with Hitler. They also deny the authority of the State to wield the sword and equate both sides as equally evil. They have also become so wrapped up in the Social Gospel that often times they have fallen for the error “Christianity and” described by C.S. Lewis in the Screwtape letters.
I say this because for a Republican to get elected in Kansas they have to mollify this group of voters and it tends to make them more liberal than they’d otherwise need to be.
