Rachel Maddow: Clint Eastwood’s RNC Speech Was ‘A Political Disaster’ For The GOP
Mediaite ^ | August 31, 2012 | Josh Feldman

Rachel Maddow arguably had the most stunned reaction of anyone in cable news last night to Clint Eastwood‘s speech at the Republican National Convention last night. She followed up on her show tonight, putting particular emphasis on the RNC’s bizarre decision to not air the Mitt Romney biographical video in the primetime slot in favor of Eastwood spending over ten minutes scolding an empty chair.

Maddow said that the timing of Eastwood’s speech was not good for the GOP, because they needed the “maximum political impact” from Romney’s speech last night, and it was completely eclipsed by Eastwood’s confusing rambling. She pointed out that the broadcast networks planned in advance to only air the final hour of the convention speeches, starting at 10 PM, in primetime, meaning that the Republicans deliberately chose which speeches would get the most attention, which included Eastwood last night.

The biographical Romney video that debuted last night aired before 10 PM, in contrast to how conventions have released such videos in election years past. Maddow said the video was well-done, but most people who tuned in did not get to see it. And, she added, the Republicans clearly thought Eastwood’s speech would be completely worth cutting the video from the primetime hour.

Maddow called out the Romney campaign for its unbelievable decision to let Eastwood do his shtick.

“What they did last night was a political disaster. This is unheard of… Who’s responsible for this? How did this happen?”

She concluded by saying, “If nobody gets fired for this, what does that say about who’s in charge over there?”

Obama 2016 is still doing very well, and expected to come in No. 5 in the box office this weekend:

Excellent to hear. The Screaming Spitter claims Romney was declaring war on Russia and this whackjob totally misinterprets what happened.

The Disaster is going to get kicked out in two months and none of the Left is going to understand what happened.

Oh??? I didn't know that. I thought he was pretty funny. I think Rachel Maddow is pretty much of a disaster when it comes to news commentary.

Exactly. Just like the Ryan pick they claimed they loved and hoped for. Just like the smalled crowds at Bo’s speeches. They wanted less people and less donations???

Sadly, about 20% of the entitlement crowd will believe and vote for BO. Landslide is coming against him and he knows it. Already making excuses and arrangements for living in Hawaii. Not going back to Chicago. They don’t like him either.

That Maddow fella sure is strange....

I was thinking that too, and wondering why his parents gave him a girl's name. Maybe it was like the "Boy Named Sue" ... (shrug)

Confusing, rambling.

Why is it that only the liberals were confused by the speech?

Let obama go unplugged from the prompter and murder language, grammar, logic and intelligibility, and the liberals swoon.

Painting Biden as the dem intellect was right on.

Fellow freepers, if you are unable to get away over the holliday, the AMC channel will be broadcasting Clint Eastwood movies all day and night on Labor Day.

Oh yeah, we know how concerned the Mad Ox is for the success of the GOP.

But don’t lose sleep over it, RM. When that sea of red starts marching across the electoral map on election eve, sinking the Democrat Party for a generation, the omission of the Romney family video really won’t matter at all.

Play Clinty For Me

By Mark Steyn
August 31, 2012 3:08 P.M.

Like William F. Gavin, I hugely enjoyed Clint Eastwood’s turn last night, but I’m not sure I agree that it was “unintentionally hilarious” and that “he forgot his lines, lost his way.” Clint is a brilliant actor, and a superb director of other actors (and I don’t just mean a quarter-century ago: In the last five years, he’s directed eight films). He’s also, as Mr. Gavin observed, a terrific jazz improviser at the piano — and, in film and music documentaries, an extremely articulate interviewee. So I wouldn’t assume that the general tenor of his performance wasn’t exactly as he intended. The hair was a clue: No Hollywood icon goes out on stage like that unless he means to.

John Hayward writes:

The intended recipient was not Mitt Romney, the convention delegates, or even Republican voters, but rather wavering independents. Clint was there to tell them it’s OK to find Obama, his ugly campaign operation, and his increasingly shrill band of die-hard defenders ridiculous. It’s OK to laugh at them.

I’m not sure he could have pulled that off if he’d delivered a slick telepromptered pitch.

The speech was priceless. Liberal media trying to repeat a lie often enough for it to be believed.

Whoever is the nutcase on WBAP in Dallas, starting at 8pm after Levin, was saying it was a mistake. I can’t stand to listen to the guy’s voice and when I heard that take on Eastwood I turned him off. I knew he was merely parroting what he read or heard from someone else. But even if he actually came up with the opinion, there is nothing else I am interested in hearing from him. Surely there is a better host in DFW than that one, and I don’t mean Mark Davis.
