Not a fan: Krauthammer calls Palin 'rather weak' and gives her 'no chance of winning' in 2012
The Daily Caller ^ | December 31, 2010 | Jeff Poor

Is the idea that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin could be America’s next president laughable? Not only to many on the left, but also to conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer.

On Friday’s broadcast of “Inside Washington,” Krauthammer offered several reasons why Palin shouldn’t be considered the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2012 presidential election.

“What do you mean if not Sarah Palin in 2012?” Krauthammer said. “Who’s saying she’s going to be the presidential candidate? I don’t even hear her saying it. Her chances of being are smaller than half a dozen other people. If you talk to Republicans, I don’t think there are what, more than one in three who would tell you she has a chance of winning the presidency or even the nomination.”

Because of that, he said, she wasn’t the favorite.

“And she is not the favorite,” he continued. “She has a very strong core constituency but outside of that I think she is rather weak.”

Krauthammer has previously downplayed Palin’s chances and indicated he favors Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. He said Palin would not be the ideal candidate to unseat a “vulnerable” President Barack Obama.

“Her negatives are over 50 percent,” Krauthammer said. “She has no chance of winning a general election. Why would you want a candidate who is going to lose against a Democrat who is going to be vulnerable and who is also extremely ideologically ambitious?”

He even employed a Keith Olbermann catch phrase to describe Palin and said even fellow Republicans didn’t see Palin as qualified.

“A half-term governor? I’m not sure Republicans think of her as qualified.” Krauthammer said.

A question for you 2DV....do you fully understand that Sarah was facing personal family bankruptcy if she stayed in office to deal with countless nuisance law suits from local Dems who were doing nothing but trying to damage her ? I must know if you fully understand that, believing as you do that she should not have resigned.

Resigning was a move of political genius, imho. a 4fer ! 1) Stopped the lawsuits and shut the hell up the dems trying to destroy her. 2) enabled her to make money on the speaker circuit/books to pay for the legal harrasment and support the conservative cause and tea party candidates. 3) which gave her a national voice, which she would not have had stuck in only-God-knows- what time zone that is in Alaska 4) while leaving the governorship in great hands.

She had no choice and it most satisfyingly backfired on the dems.

What experience did Abraham Lincoln, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford or Barack Obama have?

Governor Palin accomplished more in her short stent as governor of Alaska than most governors accomplish in a decade.

obama won didn’t he? Herman Cain has a business background that would knock the socks off a lot of people. I just think he deserves a chance. Do not get me wrong...I would LOVE to see Sarah Palin win. I would truly love to see her be President. Not because she is a female or the first female to win and all that other nonsense of the first this and that but...because she is good for our country and our children’s future. However, I just do not think she can win it. She would be crucified number one which she has been already along with her family and has stood tall and taken it all. However, I just do not see her winning and I truly do not think she would even run. She can do so much more without her hands tied. She has done great things and can continue to do great things outside the elected arena.

When I look at the prospects of a Palin candidacy, what I see is the liberals yelling "don't throw me into that briar patch."

The liberals are attempting to be very conspicuous in voicing that desire which makes me a might cynical. Beyond that, they'd better be careful what they wish for.

As much as I follow the news and keep up with current events, I must confess that until recently, although I'd heard his name mentioned about, I could in no way identify who Mitch Daniels was. I just didn't know who he was, even though I'd heard his name. Now, if that's the reality for me, someone who is so into following the news and what's going on in the political scene, think how much more of America has no idea just who is Mitch Daniels.

I agree with you until you mention someone who couldn’t even win a primary in his own state.

In 1978, Krauthammer quit medical practice to direct planning in psychiatric research for the Jimmy Carter administration, and began contributing to The New Republic magazine. During the presidential campaign of 1980, Krauthammer served as a speech writer to Vice President Walter Mondale.

I was just going to suggest that this be a required first post of any of Krauthammer's PDS threads. Looks like you got the same idea.

Obama had been a state senator and then a US senator. Cain should be running for congress or senate.

It has nothing to do with being conservative.

Anyone who thinks Palin is "rather weak" is just rather stupid.

With all due respect, you're reading the left exactly backwards.

Here's the primary factoid you should use to analyze events:
There is no Republican hopeful more vilified by the left than Sarah Palin. The left is more afraid of her than any other potential Republican nominee. This is borne out in thousands of articles and statements in the MSM over the last two years.

At the same time, Palin elicits a level of enthusiasm and "broken glass" support on the right that has rarely been seen in Republican politics.

If you simply look at these two factual circumstances long enough, side by side, you will come to one inescapable conclusion -- Palin is the correct and obvious choice for the 2012 nomination.

“Surely you don’t expect rational responses, Mr. Fingers. Why should you, when you’re not dealing with a rational phenomenon?”

Jeez...I like her and I’ll vote for her if she’s the candidate, but it appears that blind devotion renders folks incapable of reasonable discussion. Some are far better than others but they’re ALL politicians, not saviors - and I don’t unquestionably follow any of them.

Or governor. From a governorship Cain would be in a good position for VP or prez.

As to Palin, we simply have different opinions. I think she’s by far the strongest, most principled and charismatic candidate we have. I think she will run, but as with any candidate I also want to see her come out speaking strongly and in-depth on foreign and domestic issues. I’ve winced through some of the reality show/celebrity magazine appearances with her family, but that’s in part just my own taste and preferences.
