AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Public health interests prevailed over warnings that personal freedoms are being eroded as the Maine House gave its final approval to a bill to ban smoking in bars and taverns.

Representatives' 95-47 enactment vote sent the measure to the Senate and put Maine a step closer to joining California and Delaware in imposing statewide bans on smoking in bars. New York's ban starts in July, and Connecticut's newly enacted ban on smoking in bars takes effect next April.

The only ones busting businesses would be you hypocrite smokers who prefer cowering at home with your cigarettes rather than going without a cigarette for 30 minutes, supporting the businesses you claim to champion .

Wrong. We will go where we want. And not go where we don't want. That is, until they take that freedom away from us as well.

You folks are the hypocrites. You are the ones saying that nonsmokers will now come out in droves to more than make up for smokers. If that is the case, why worry about a few measly smokers?

These businesses were doing just fine, thant you, until you folks came along. You are the ones busting the businesses.

Don't waste your time. Minion is a mindless chanting troll. It just says the same thing over and over again, makes me think of the Clintons.

We need to design a flag for smokers to rally around. The Alabama flag with the red cross replaced by two burning cigarettes might work, (anybody photo shop?) Across the bottom the words "God I Miss Freedom".

Sounds good to ME! And also, a bill board of the same nature ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE STATE HOUSE!

Just too damn funny! If anyone wants proof that we are a society with no real problems to worry about, just consider what your legislators are busying themselves with?

Oh but we have teens killing themselves in southern Maine every year, dying in twisted metal, from drinking and driving. BUT OH MY GOD DON'T LET THEM SMOKE!

No one says smokers can't patronize a business, only that you can't smoke there.

The only ones busting businesses would be you hypocrite smokers who prefer cowering at home with your cigarettes rather than going without a cigarette for 30 minutes, supporting the businesses you claim to champion .

You still don't understand that it is the business owner's property. They make the decision as to what customer they want to attract. Until now that is. Will you go to these bars and make up for the lost business of the person that goes to a bar for more than 2 hours and smokes there. Or is your "swing in and out" attitude of 30 minutes what you think will make up for it. 1 drink sold now to the likes of you vs. 6 drinks sold to the regular bar customer who smokes.

Would you be willing to pay 6x the price of a drink than what a smoker/regular will pay? If so, then you can make up for those lost revenues, if not STFU and stay at home in your "safe" world!

You're right, no one should have personal responsibility, your admitted health problems from smoking are all the government's responsibility.

Thanks for your input, holier-than-thou.

Your attack is personal and petty.

In your view, the government should stop research on everything that is sourced at human causation. You'd have to include genetic birth defects and diseases as well, right?

Your turn will come. We'll see what song you sing then.

Keep in mind that these anti smoke nazis are only thinking that they might want to go to the bar some day! Therefore, it should be dictated how people behave there so if they decide to go there sometime in the future, then they can be comfortable and unoffended.

Never mind that the business may not exist in the future when they decide they want to go to that bar.

Instead, it, the government, is completely ignorant of what an addiction this is for some people. They think outlawing smoking will stop smoking and there is nothing anywhere to support that.

Actually, there is much evidence that it DOES. Your statement is false.

The State of Maine would lose that $1 tax on each pack of smokes.

The state of Maine would lose a lot more then THAT!

Maybe with a message that reads "Cigarette taxes collected by the State of Maine would pay for XXX billboards like this one across the state."

NO THERE IS NOT. Some goober website maybe. I have watched the areas of smoking shrink and shrink and shrink and I haven't seen or read about one person quiting because of a ban. Sounds like you've seen some propergander.

Instead of the number of billboards, they should list the social programs funded by tobacco in the state of maine.

Something like:

If everyone quits smoking no state college scholarships would exist!

If it weren't for tobacco your property taxes would be $600 higher a year!

on and on.......

Listen, Jerk! I grew up in smoking restaurants and bars. Didn't hurt me in the slightest. NOR any of my friends, whether they smoked or not.

This is all Government propaganda and YOU KNOW IT!

And just why do you think we should still spend money AT RECREATION, mind you, in restaurants and bars that will be forbidden to accomodate us? You must think we are all sheeple out here.

I pity the business owner, with all my heart. But my money is my money, and it's like this: love my dog or get the hell out of my way.

Where's the evidence?
If you're going to cite it you should be willing to produce it.
