AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Public health interests prevailed over warnings that personal freedoms are being eroded as the Maine House gave its final approval to a bill to ban smoking in bars and taverns.

Representatives' 95-47 enactment vote sent the measure to the Senate and put Maine a step closer to joining California and Delaware in imposing statewide bans on smoking in bars. New York's ban starts in July, and Connecticut's newly enacted ban on smoking in bars takes effect next April.

>> their smoke is really offensive <<

You do not have the right to not be offended. If the smoke offends you, leave.

I still don't buy that as a valid point that relates to any of this.

I'm not even sure what minion's point is anymore. As best I can tell, minion is saying that the government can trample private property rights when it comes to smoking bans because the military bans smoking in boot camp.

"Its the same one. Its the stench of the smoke and the insistance on smoking anywhere and everywhere wihout any thought of its effects on others. Its the attitude. "

Well I'll go back to what I said previously. They could take the same issue with western women offending middle-easterners and insist we all wear burkas on an international flights because of the effects on muslim men's offense at seeing skin on a woman. I'm sure they are just as offended by women showing skin as you are by smokers.

The least he could do is post the encyclopedia that has to do with what is being discussed.

That's a lot more lenient on smoking than the states are trying to make the places here. It doesn't look to me like they have any intention of banning it altogether. It looks like they have every intention of providing a place where both smokers and non-smokers are comfortable.

What minion is saying is that because of the Navy's smoking ban, only 45% of the USS Lincoln crew used tobacco in 1992, and 44% of the USS Carl Vinson crew used tobacco in 1995. After reading this, I'm now almost ready to concede the argument to minion. I mean, who can argue with his evidence?

Sorry he didn't work for you...but he's definitely not fake. Whatever he did left me exhausted for a day or so (I couldn't even drive home).

After my last posting I remembered that it actually didn't work on one of my friends, who said that he basically didn't want to quit. And you do have to WANT to quit for it to work.

I'll say a prayer that things go okay for you. I've always thought that all that second hand smoke stuff was bulls--t. But the cancer stuff isn't.

Smoking is a risk factor for cancer but that's all it is.

But then he'd have to enter that scary land of logic and consistency.

No, much better for him to remain safely at home in Smugville, hoping for more majorities to come squarely down against rights.

It is so frustrating to read this thread. The smokers just don't get it: Their insistence on smoking anywhere anytime is the problem. Rude behavior is now being legislated because common courtesy cannot be found.

Just recently traveled to Nevada and was ready for the onslaught of smoke every where I went. However, in the two years since I had been to Nevada laws have been passed to ensure no smoking in selected areas. And no smoking areas in restaurants are now de riguer and much larger than the last time I was there. Heck, in the Reno Hilton smoking is no longer allowed in the restuarants. Ahh, progress.

Yep...but as I get older I want to try to mitigate all of the risk factors...that's why I get on the @#$%^@! treadmill every day (damn instrument of torture) and try to eat right and all of that other crap you didn't have to worry about twenty years ago.

Perhaps you should have a cigarette - it focuses the concentration.

Then find the post advocating this.

This "argument" addresses property right exactly how?

Oh, we're getting it all right. Right in the @#$.

Their insistence on smoking anywhere anytime is the problem. Rude behavior is now being legislated because common courtesy cannot be found.

I see you like to generalize. Well, up yours. I do NOT insist on smoking anywhere, anytime. Neither do any of my smoking friends.

Heck, in the Reno Hilton smoking is no longer allowed in the restuarants. Ahh, progress.

Ahh, yes. Let's not let a little thing like the Bill of Rights stand in the way of progress.

Heck, in the Reno Hilton smoking is no longer allowed in the restuarants.

Was that not the decision of the management?
Most of us have no problem with that.
I might try not to eat in the Reno Hilton's restaurants but that would be my choice.

Why are we debating this with the same Smoke Nazis with their same Smoke Nazi Propaganda. Let's chat among ourselves and ignore them. Let's show them that they are right about smokers "We are rude and don't care what they think. Because frankly none of these control freak the government should ban everything A..holes are worth replying to." Flurry 6/4/3

No, thanks I want my lungs pink and healthy. My dad is a pack a day smoker with heart disease, COPD, hacking cough, smoker's breath, and odor, and he has told his three daughters if he ever caught us smoking he would slap the cigarette out of our mouths. He hates the smoking and what it has done to his health.

As far as rights, where do you want to go with this, madame?
