[history]
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Public health interests prevailed over warnings that personal freedoms are being eroded as the Maine House gave its final approval to a bill to ban smoking in bars and taverns.
Representatives' 95-47 enactment vote sent the measure to the Senate and put Maine a step closer to joining California and Delaware in imposing statewide bans on smoking in bars. New York's ban starts in July, and Connecticut's newly enacted ban on smoking in bars takes effect next April.

Are you not doing the same? Not at all. I do not smoke in non smoking businesses that I chose to patronize. In addition, I do not insist that all businesses that I may ever walk into allow smoking by law.
In contrast, your mentality insists that every place, whether you intend to grace it with your presence or not, conform to your ideal.
One is by choice, the other is by mandate. If you like to live by mandate, you do not belong in a free society.

"There are more places that you can't smoke than places you can. The main reason bars are fun is because most people in bars are fun. Most people in bars smoke. Most smokers are easy going and open (unless you try to take away one of the last places they can smoke and socialize). Take smokers out of bars and you may as well take the alcohol out too. If smoke bothers you go to a non-smoking bar and hang around with the one dull person who'll be there. Ever notice that ice cream parlors are not that happening? "
Great post! :) I like you more and more with each thread I come across with you posting.

Being a sheep producer, I would like to correct the references on FR to sheep-like traits. Sheep do follow one another most times. But when you try to get a sheep to do something it is suspect of, good friggin luck! All the dogs, gates, chutes, and other devices ain't worth spit.
Sheep will scatter and run from a predator. However once caught and in a grip, they will do nothing as if to invite death more quickly without making the whole thing even more unpleasant than it already is.
A female ewe with lambs will defy all rules and snap you in two faster than you can see her coming. A male will take on the front end of a truck or tractor. Mine did. The score was Sheep (1) and Tractor (0) and a month for the tractor in the repair shop.

Perhaps the government can outlaw offensive omissions from self-absorbed contentious people Were talking a SUPER Majority here. These votes to ban smoking should be a wake up call for behavior modification.

I haven't seen or read about one person quiting because of a ban I did, however, read the opposite; when something is 'banned', if often makes it more desireable. It's the rebel in us! Remember Prohibition?

"I do have a message that has the ability to stop this but smokers don't want to here they are part of the problem. Again, if they became as considerate as the average pipe and cigar smoker these bans would be much harder to push. Its their only hope. But, so far based on the reaction I get smokers are too self absorbed in their habit to realize that their smoke is really offensive and they will continue to be their own worst enemy. "
I've heard this stated before here (maybe by you) but I've never met a smoker that was inconsiderate around non-smokers. Every smoker I've known is polite about not smoking next to anyone who requests they not do so unless they are in a smoking desgnated area and have no place else to go. In a bar it's different. You expect a bar to be smokey. That's how it's always been. If you are so health conscience about the smoke then think about what all that alcohol will do to your liver. If you aren't going there to drink either then you are useless to their business and there is no reason for the owners to care about what you think.

Ask Glenn for evidence of HIS claim! Or is there a double standard here?

Can you get to Brookline, Mass? There's an amazing guy there who can help you quit. It worked for me, my wife, and 10 of my closest friends.
The best part? NO WITHDRAWAL OR SUFFERING. I swear it. I walked in a smoker and walked out a non-smoker. This was 6 years ago, and except for a twinge once in a long while, it's been easy.
His name is Yefim Shubentsov, aka The Mad Russian. His info:
1680A Beacon Street
Brookline, Massachusetts 20146
(617) 232-3930
You can read about him here and here and G-d forbid, in Salon here

Actually, young lady, the government banned smoking marijuana in 1937 and more people today smoke than when they banned it.
Therefore, from the available evidence, your statement is false.

"Smokers and non-smokers have been separated for years in bars and taverns, minion. It is the non-smokers who come into smoking sections and then complain about the smoke. I know and you know it."
They just want to sit in the smoking section beause the wait is less time. Then they want to complain about the people smoking there even though it's their own fault for lack of patience. And I'd love anyone to show me one genuine study that shows 2nd hand smoke kills people.

???..Think you missed some of my comments and especially the 'bumper sticker' after my name.
"to allow smoking or ban smoking by law" is scary to me!

Actually, there is much evidence that it DOES. Your statement is false. You are right, of course. Tobacco tax is a federal and state line item revenue account which they can balance by increasing taxes as consumption falls. The government gets to have its cake and eat it too.

Wasn't there during prohibition but I learned something from the mistake. Seems that the gummit and GNAT Minion didn't learn anything. Those who fail to learn from the past are destined to repeat it. Or whatever that quote was.

Now I know that you are here with an agendaThe agenda's called "freedom to exercise property rights."
Tear yourself away from Mein Kampf and look it up.
Statist asswipe.

Some goober website maybe. I have watched the areas of smoking shrink and shrink and shrink and I haven't seen or read about one person quiting because of a ban. Sounds like you've seen some propergander. You have heard correctly. I find more people having house parties today, serving drinks, playing music, and plenty of ashtrays! And, buying liquor for the party is a LOT cheaper then going to the bars.
I have the Hepa Air Cleaners in all rooms of my house, and you can't even TELL when there has been smokers over. Its great. But I still do feel sorry for the business owners...........but..........oh well...........
