With Phoenix building resorts nearby, Manross said, a smoking ban could damage a cornerstone of Scottsdale tourism.
But just think of the millions of non-smoking tourists who will flock to Scottsdale to vacation in a smoke free zone!
Yea, right.

Does anybody know a restaurant that has voluntarily banned smoking, besides McDonalds and other fast food places? If smoking bans were good ideas and good for business, PRIVATE ENTERPRISE would be doing it big-time.
Is there any objective evidence to indicate that this is the case?

We have a local Italian pizza restaurant that went smoke free about six months ago . I used to have lunch there about once a week, but when the ban went in effect I stopped going.
Last week I stopped to pick up a carry out pizza in the evening and they had a sign up SMOKING ALLOWED BETWEEN 11:00 AND 4:00 PM. I asked the cashier why they changed and she said they had lost most of their lunch business.......imagine that !!!

There is a bar/dance club/live music venue that went smoke free in Omaha...for about a month.

Peoria Councilman Bob Barrett asked whether the cities should approach the Legislature to take the lead on a statewide ban. Officials in the room burst into laughter.
Best line in the article.
That's the Arizona I remember, from 7 years in Tempe during the Frank Kush administration <)B^).

Council members for Peoria and Glendale, which are exploring a possible ban, called the meeting because businesses in cities that have adopted tough bans, such as Tempe, complain that patrons take their business to bordering cities.Well then Tempe ought to rescind their smoking ban if they want the patrons to come back to Tempe businesses.

Mayors and officials of nine Valley cities and towns on Thursday agreed that a regional or statewide smoking ban is needed to prevent some cities from losing money to competitors. Ah yes. The Level Playing Field.
What are they going to do about the VFW's, American Legions, and the like? These are members only! How about all the smokers just join these clubs and give our money to those that deserve it.

this would be a great opportunity for the Indian reservations...sell cigarettes without tax and put up good resturants, clubs and motels...take all the money from the politicos that think "grown men and women" still need "parenting".....

But just think of the millions of non-smoking tourists who will flock to Scottsdale to vacation in a smoke free zone! Yes, right! Lets see: California is "smoke where you can find a place;" Delaware is looking at smoke free casino's, Dover Downs, bars and restaurants; Floridians I hope will vote NO on Amendment 6. Las Vegas, of all places, have the NANNIES as well:
20 September 2002
Forty percent to 50 percent of casino gamblers are smokers, about double the percentage of the U.S. population as a whole, Mehl said. A 1993 gaming-industry study showed that Nevada casinos alone would have lost $1 billion in revenue if casinos were forced to go smoke-free.

Well, as the lawmakers and the anti-smokers tell it: there will be NO loss of business. In fact! Business will PICK UP because all the people who can't stand smoking will pick up the SLACK!
You believe that and I have a condo I can sell you over the Baltimore River. heh!

All the Hoss's restaurants here in Pittsburgh banned smoking altogether. I don't know if they did the same in other areas.

MANY of us are trying to get the word out to smokers: BUY from the Reservations! BUY from the Internet! ROLL YOUR OWN! Stop feeding tax money into the State Coffers!!!
and
Smokers United
Let our "lawmakers" pull that tax money out from another "dark place where the sun don't shine" to balance their stupid budgets!

What are they going to do about the VFW's, American Legions, and the like? These are members only! The people who are bound and determined to take away property rights, will find a way to take ALL property rights. They may take a different tack, but in the end, thuggery will win.
It can't lose, it has the support of other businesses, Democrats and a large percentage of so-called consevatives on this site. Thugs are thugs, they will find a way.

And they just keep getting re-elected into office. It's sickening. And we give them our vote in all good faith, then when they are in office, they find ways to stick it to us. I'm tired of it.

But be careful if you criticize Republicans around here, it could be hazardous to your posting privileges.

The Cities would still loose money, smokers would not go out very often.
