Most people cringe at the sight of a pregnant woman smoking. Some people feel strongly enough to say something in protest. But one local man took matters into his own hands early Friday when, according to police, he shot an expectant mother who refused to put out her cigarette.

Women kill a million of them each year since Roe vs. Wade and get off scott free. And this makes attacking pregnant women who happen to smoke OK in your book????

No, in this case, the baby was not hurt, so it is not the same thing. In my opinion, anyone who hurts a baby, in the womb, or out of the womb, is a murderer, but that is not the law, and the Supreme Court disagrees with me.

Allowing women to smoke has caused a myriad of problems, both healthwise, and otherwise. You are living in the wrong century if you really believe this justifies the attack of this woman. Regardless of whether you approve of smoking or not, there is absolutely no justification for what happened here. Do not use your dislike of an adult's choices to justify your own prejudices, if that is what you are expressing here.

If you think smoking is good for a child in the womb, what century are you living in????

I am not expressing that, as a libertarian, we believe that no one has the right to initiate violence against another.

What I said was that those who are against women smoking, have lots of other similar laws in place that were designed to protect women, like protecting women from the draft, from being sent into combat, giving married women dowry rights, and most recently giving dowry rights to the wife in the husbands 401 k program which was designed specifically to protect women.

There are clear and proven dangers in smoking, particularly to wommen, and to women bearing children. The same dangers are not relevent to men.

There are many laws designed to protect just women, or women and children. On the other hand, I know of no law that was ever designed to protect "just men".

That would be stupid for any woman to support a law that would only protect men, and we woman would never do such a thing, so you will never see a law designed to protect only men.

You obviously know nothing about the dangers of smoking, of women, and even less than nothing about the dangers of smoking in particular to women, such as the dangers for women on birth control which cause greatly increased risk of fatal blood clots, heart attack, and stroke -- especially for women 35 and over.

It would be the anti-gun groups:

who wouldn't mind if the woman would have had an abortion.

who would blame the caliber, make and model of the gun and not the shooter.

who would dance in the woman's blood in order to create more gun control.

that disarm threatened women.

who disregard rising crime rates in cities and counties that have gun control and fight for more gun control in cities and counties that have no crime.

Each of these statements are backed up with facts.

Some of the women here who admit to smoking while pregnant need to have your heads examined.

What, we should lie? This was back when there were ashtrays in the pediatricians' waiting room and a big overflowing ashtray on her desk.

Yeah, Gabz, you know once we were allowed to smoke (nevermind that many did anyway), we also started having other "dangerous" ideas. Such as that we weren't property anymore.

I always thought it interesting that women were not allowed to go into bars, until the year just before Prohibition. Women are not equal , and most of us do not want to be brought down to being equal. Most women dont want to be drafted or to be sent into combat in Iraq or Vietnam, or whatever third world infested rathole that the men always so eagarly want to go fight in, we dont want to lose dowry rights, we dont want to lose custody of our children, etc.

But if I were the woman, considering she received physical harm, I'd take it more seriously than just some nut with a gun. Who died and left you in charge? - HOW DARE you decide what another should or should not do.

Unfortunately, that is the way society is. We women control now the vote in this country, and we women will ultimately decide, thru our chosen leaders, whether or not young men(not young women) will be drafted, and/or sent to die in some swamp or desert.

Nicotine is a drug, just as marijuanna or opium is a drug, and most people on this board think that they have a right to decide whether others can take drugs, or not.

"You are insulting and owe each one of us an apology.

By your comments it appears you are a smoker, so I won't ask you to hold your breath for that apology. Trying to create a link between the lunatic actions of a deranged madman haranguing a pregnant women for smoking and in the process accidentally injuring her, and the forces behind the anti-tobacco campaign is far-fetched and reaching to the extreme. Inhaling poisonous smoke isn't my idea of a good time and is not something I would waste my time crusading for. If it calms your nerves or makes you feel glamorous and hip, by all means puff, puff away, but please take your whining about the anti-tobacco campaign somewhere else sister, I'm not buying it.

Where DO you anti's COME from. This is FREE REPUBLIC for heaven's sake!

And for your information, I am PAST the age of 35 and do NOT take the pill! I also had cancer twice in my life, and both times had a team of Doctors and they ALL said my cancer was not caused by smoking.

You think I know nothing about smoking and cancer? Check out my web site at Forces to which I am the President of Forces Maine. (But I am sure you will belittle it as well)

But there is no talking to you! You think you know it all.....

I am not against smoking, at all. But I have no false illusions that smoking is good for you, it isnt.

Furhtermore, I dont believe that ANY substance, or ANY inanimate or material thing(except weapons of mass destruction), should ever be illegal to any citizen of the United States.

I'm actually starting to wonder if these health freaks aren't actually creating a generation of sickly kids right on their own. It sure seems the generations of kids of smokers and drinkers are doing very well.

Gabz! My Mom smoked, and I weighed "10 pounds" at birth!

My daughter weighed 8.12 pounds at birth!

Gabz, I want to know where these wimpy men come from today. Sure aren't the men that WE grew up with! The anti's in here are all wusses. ack!

And what about the woman who was shot? According to the newsreports the unborn child ewas fine - You are actually condoning the behavior of the attacker?????

It sure sounds as if you are.

If you think smoking is good for a child in the womb, what century are you living in????

Show one place where I have EVER said any such thing.

I am not expressing that, as a libertarian, we believe that no one has the right to initiate violence against another.

While there have been a few FReepers I have expressed my desire to kick their butt if I encountered them in public, in all the time I have been posting to FR I have NEVER expressed any right nor desire to initiate violence against another. Whatever gave you the idea I have?

What I said was that those who are against women smoking, have lots of other similar laws in place that were designed to protect women, like protecting women from the draft, from being sent into combat, giving married women dowry rights, and most recently giving dowry rights to the wife in the husbands 401 k program which was designed specifically to protect women.

I don't need anyone to PROTECT me - I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself. And my 12 gauge will tell you so when you appear at my front door.

As I asked, what century are you from - "dowry" rights?????

There are clear and proven dangers in smoking, particularly to wommen, and to women bearing children.

Oh, really - please provide the proof, beyond some vague notion of increased risk of problems.

The same dangers are not relevent to men. You've got to be kidding me?????

That would be stupid for any woman to support a law that would only protect men, and we woman would never do such a thing, so you will never see a law designed to protect only men.

I actually can not believe you are a woman and would possibly believe ANY of the clap trap you are trying to promote here. I'm a full time homemaker and my husband, who was reading this over my shoulder, is even appalled at some of the things you are saying.

I am am not and have never been some kind of women's libber - but you need to desperately get out of the 19th century.

You are absolutely right, but also, dont forget that old age also causes just as many , if not more, problems as obesity, and according to my cancer researcher friend, old age is the leading cause/factor of cancer.

To put all of this in perspective, the entire War on Drugs is about an estimated 100,000 drug addicts and no marijuanna fatalities according to their own statistics, which sort of makes the entire Drug War less than not important in the big scheme of things. Even if every drug addict actually died, it would still be less than the numbers that die due to smoking alone each year.

You are obviously a control freak who has no understanding that others have a life that may be different than yours.

Who died and left you in charge of the lives of others???

I would suggest that you do a bit of checking regarding the people you are spewing your anti-smoker hatred at.....to a one of us, I would suggest, we know more about the risks involved in our ADULT choice to smoke cigarettes than all the anti fanatics you represent combined.

And the folks in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. are also freaking out because of the sniper guy. And again, probably a crazed lunatic, but chances are high that the shooter is an NRA member. Gotta love them guns.

Got any source for that, or is that a stupid comment with no basis in reality by a stupid person?

And as for this comment
If I have the righ to bear arms, then I have the right to own a nuclear bomb
No you don't. Read Federalist 46 and get yourself an education.

Thet be great - however, I just don't see a need for someone to own a H&K MP5K - nice gun, good company, but...

That's nice, if I own one, it's none of your or anyone else's business. That simple.
