A top Housing Authority official has smoked himself out of an $80,000-a-year job.

After consulting with the mayor's office, Housing chairman Tino Hernandez yesterday ordered the immediate firing of Robert Swinton, the deputy director of the Office of Facility Planning, one of five employees spotted by a Post reporter last week in extended smoking sessions outside the agency's headquarters at 250 Broadway.

What is wrong with this statement that it would require "intervention" by the mods??

I was being accused of something "way back then," and I ask the Moderator about this. I did receive email and all is fine, thanks!

If this is a Republican forum...then we should all be praising Bloomberg (an (R) BTW) for his wonderful statist obsession to eliminate cigarette smoking from NYC no?

Bloomberg is not a true Conservative (BTW). He was an Independent but switched over so he could run for office.

With the smoking issue, we all know that even some Conservative Lawmakers have turned RINO on this issue.

I am wondering..... who has the time to time all these people, who ever it is, needs to get a job.

Having said that, it's more about goofing off than anyting else, do they keep an eye on the non-smokers goofing off.... somehow I doubt it.

Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

From the very first paragraph on the FR homepage! Been conservative since I first got here in 98.

PS All these wacko nicorete pushers can kiss my gum wadded dentures!!! :-)

Personally, I think making love to my wife beats any drug ever invented.

They don't allow that in the office.

Not to mention the little Post journalist standing outside all day keeping watch on the “smokers,” taking photos and timing them. Must be a snitch of Bloomberg’s, you think?

>>Nobody at the top ever stops to consider that it was the initial ban that was the bad idea in the first place.

I disagree. Educated people don't smoke, and don't enjoy smelling it on their clothes after leaving work, incurring higher cleaning bills, etc. Most companies like employing smart, educated people, so no smoking in the office isn't unreasonable.

Our private consulting engineering firm had a no-smoking policy 15+ years ago. And we weren't a bunch of carrot eating leftist tree-huggers; more like a bunch of Reaganite gun-owners in the South.

So, your saying that all of us in here are UNEDUCATED BOOBS? Is that what your saying?

Guess what! Your an IDIOT!

No difference. You should not have to put up with the stench. Now go home and increase your risk of cancer.

My husband just had his checkup, xray and all, started smoking at 13, is now 70...... doctor told him his lungs were clear.... sorry to disappoint you.

I finally purchased some roll your own supplies. It's easy to get the hang of and the cigarettes are *far* better than the ones you normally buy in packs. Talk about inexpensive, too!

. Educated people don't smoke

This is the biggest lie of all, I know plenty of educated people who do smoke, my doctor just quit a couple of years ago.......... by the way, many doctors still smoke.

"FreedomPoster" eh? The above response reeks of forceful liberal socialism that has nothing to do with freedom or common sense. BTW John Adams and alot of the other founding fathers enjoyed a pipe once in a while too...I wouldnt call them uneducated.

That's WONDERFUL, grimalkin!!! I tell you! I was paying $44-$50 a carton over a year ago. Now, a perfect carton of roll your owns for under $8.00. Can you imagine the savings for Christmas? It's been wonderful for us!

Thank God for the Internet. I never would have known about our little Smoke Shop downtown. But people that have been rolling their own for a long time got the word out in here, and that's how I found out! That tax money is just as good in OUR pockets as the state coffers, that's for sure.

by the way, many doctors still smoke.

The surgeon who operated on Hubby's knee this month came out after the surgery to let me know how it went. You could really smell it on him! So, yes, many Doctors/Surgeon's do still smoke. Especially if they are over 40 from the old school.

Bloomberg's a walking, talking d**k.

I absolutely despise people like him. He does everything in his (now considerable) power to make a legal act, smoking, as illegal as hell..........then fires people who are forced to play by their stupid, silly rules (e.g. you have to go outside to catch a butt). Then, you get some d**kwad reporter (real crusader for the public, this one, eh??) who takes pictures while holding a stopwatch......attempting to make a handful of smokers look like f**king criminals.

There is not enough money on this planet to get me to live in NYC.

Smoking is the relaxation of choice for many people.

Fine, just do it on your own time.

What do you prefer? Prescription drugs or booze?

Get a hobby. Better yet, start a business, hire only smokers, pay them by the hour and tell them they can go out and smoke, or even run errands to their hearts content during work hours.
