IF EVER YOU WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND LET OUR LEADERS KNOW YOU FIND THEIR BEHAVIOR UNACCEPTABLE, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO SO!

YOU MUST ATTEND THE CITY COUNCIL HEARING

PLACE:  CITY HALL, COUNCIL CHAMBERS

* Date and time is always subject to change by the council.

 Please call the Speaker's Office at 212-788-7210 a few days before to confirm.

LET'S FILL THE CHAMBERS WITH ALL THOSE OPPOSED.  LET US SPILL OUT INTO THE HALLWAY AND ONTO THE FRONT STEPS OF CITY HALL.  LET'S MAKE SOME NOISE!

NO ONE HAS TO BUT ANYONE WISHING TO SPEAK TO THE COUNCIL TO TELL THEM EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS SMOKING BAN CAN SIGN UP TO DO SO WHEN YOU ARRIVE.

ONLY A LARGE SHOW OF OPPOSITION WILL HAVE ANY IMPACT. 

TIME TO OUTNUMBER THE ANTI-SMOKER CRUSADERS

It was people very much like you, who want to wield the brute force of the state against their neighbors for engaging in 'risky behavior' that 'affects us all', 'costs us all money', 'raises our insurance costs' and 'undermines the public health'. Sound familiar?

This looks like the sort of trap that NYC is notorious for SheLion.

Here's how it goes: They want a subway fare increase of 25 cents. They announce a subway fare increase of 1 dollar. The straphanger groups throw a fit and attend some meeting where they are allowed to vent. The straphanger groups are handed a "victory" in that the fare increases by "only" 25 cents. Ain't that neat? Everyone is happy because no one sees that they've been set up.

You'll probably see a similar outcome with regard the smoking ban. If they increase the retrictions while leaving you feeling you've achieved some victory or that you've stemmed the tide then you've been had.

The Travelers have nothing on NYC politicians.

Fret not. 150 years from now there will be a smokers' Jesse Jackson. Smokers' Studies Departments in all the universities. There will be debates about smokers' reparations for the descendants of those so brutally taken away from Flavor Country during the 2000's.

Worse, they claim a wacko, dubious constituional right to stink up a place. There is no such right.

I don't think that you'll find any smokers on this forum claiming that it is a "right" to smoke.
It IS, however, a liberty.
It should be the "right" of the property owner to allow a LEGAL activity on their business premises, if they so wish.
