What can we say about Bill Simon, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in California? He makes every mistake, and then some. In November, we can write a postmortem on why Mr. Simon lost to Gov. Gray Davis. Or we can go public now, hoping someone will fix the mess.

oh please..at this point, davis has peeved off so many people in this state, left and right, that my dead grandmother has a better chance of getting elected. One can't presume that davis has a chance in heck...and why the hit piece on simon?

And because Davis has $30 million in his war chest and control of the state political machinery. The WT editorial sounds like a friendly, constructive chastisement to me.

I said it several months ago in here: Gray Davis is going to snatch victory from the jaws of abysmal mismanagement, both his own and his opponent's, after Simon utterly folds -- as Republicans usually fold -- and will win re-election by no more than 5 percentage points.

And, no, I don't like it.

Republicans in California are in disarray. Consider the president's go-to guy, Gerald Parsky. He feuds with Party Chairman Shawn Steel over party reorganization.

Simon's camp does have some problems, not surprisingly. But the above, to me, is the main problem. Parsky should have been canned long ago.

What this criticism (and I did find it to be constructive) fails to mention, as every media outlet has, is that even with all the bad news Simon has led in 8 of 10 polls and Grayout's disapproval ratings are constantly over 50%. The naysaying started before the primary was even over, and it will continue unabated until November. But Simon can still win. Will he? I dunno.

How, then, did Mr. Simon win?

Mr. Simon long ago was endorsed by Rudy Giuliani.

Bill Simon didn't win the California Republican primary. Rudy Giuliani did.

I'm getting sick of the whole Republican party. They are taking the wind out of my sails. IMO, we have the right answers, we just don't have any salespeople. Marbley mouth Trent Lott comes to mind as I type. And I don't know if I can vote for Bush next time around.

I didn't realize a campaign was necessary when running against Gray Davis.

Why do I feel the same way? We either have liberal pubs who fall all over themselves to out dem the dems, or we have wishy-washy I'm for everybody types, or we have conservative wannabes who can't get elected. Even w/ G.W. it's the same thing. How can such self-proclaimed conservative like Bush let McGaw and Mineta go "oh no, we don't need guns in the cockpits, some lib from Marin County might get offended. Some muslim wacko who wants hijack the plane might get offended." Boo hoo.

This editorial is completely inaccurate and looks like it was written by someone who was affiliated with the failed Jones campaign because the arguments are the same ... or someone from Jones' consulting firm of McNally-Temple who is bitter because they lost many clients to Russo-Marsh (including Mr. Fong).

First, Simon won the primary because he had a solid conservative message and delivered it to the people. He didn't jump in early as everyone said he *HAD* to do, instead he quietly set up a solid campaign team and prepared for victory. When Riordan started making mistakes (talking about his so-called beliefs), Republicans needed somewhere to go: Simon was the only game in town. Jones couldn't raise any money, had no grassroots network, and while claiming to be a conservative, he was so shy about his views for fear of offending anyone.

If Simon had won by 2 or 3 points, I would say that Gray Davis was instrumental in Riordan's defeat simply because he hounded him so hard. Davis was never TRYING to make Riordan lose; he was trying to weaken him so he would have no traction on March 6th. As it turned out, Simon won by 19 points in a landslide, and that was NOT because of Gray Davis! It was because Simon's team set the candidate up as the alternative to liberal Riordan.

Now, everyone is harping on Simon "not attacking Gray Davis." Excuse me, but I'm on the Simon campaign email list and receive their attacks on Gray Davis, which are constant and accurate. Simon has outflanked Davis on key issues like veterans, the national guard, and the environment. While we can't sit around and blame the liberal media for not reporting on Simon, Simon IS in fact working the grassroots, spreading his message and, like in the primary, SETTING HIMSELF UP FOR VICTORY. Go to his webpage, read his statements, sign up for his updates.

Outside of political hacks like us on FR and the media, NO ONE is paying attention to the campaign. Simon is going to have to go directly to the people because the media isn't going to do it for us, but it would be STUPID and a WASTE of money to go up on television or radio or in the mail now. PEOPLE ARE NOT FOCUSED ON THE CAMPAIGN.

If Davis' numbers started to increase, or his disapproval rating suddenly fall, then I might re-think my position, but as it is, people don't like him and when they start to focus on the election, they will start looking for someone else.

THAT'S when Simon should be up on the media: to offer that alternative.

This article was written by someone who personally dislikes Bill Simon and wants to tear him down. Every campaign has problems, and I'm sure there are some in the Simon operation. But they are no where as bad as this article makes out. We have three and a half months until the election with little public interest yet, and this idiot (whoever wrote it) is already declaring Simon the loser.

I'm sorry. I disagree. Any problems with the Simon campaign are fixable, and Gray Davis has more problems than Simon. First and foremost: NO ONE LIKES HIM OR TRUSTS HIM. As far as the people are concern, on Simon the jury is still out.

At least they billed this drivel as an editorial.

Simon is a rookie pitcher in 1941 pitching to Ted Williams. Davis knows how to win elections and how to destroy opponents. At least Reagan had won the presidency of the SAG.

The editorial was written by someone with an axe to grind. There are obvious errors in the information.

Simon's campaign might have some problems, but they are fixable. He hasn't lost the election yet.

I do agree that Davis will lie, cheat and steal to win and we need to be on the lookout and watch our backs.

But with friends like this, who needs enemies?

It's up to us, the conservative grassroots, to help Simon come hell or high water. Simon is one of us, he's raising money and doing what it takes to win, but he needs the grassroots to win. If we bail on him because he doesn't something we don't like, we're as culpable as Davis and his lies.

Go Simon!

Even rookie pitchers strike out home run hitters. And Davis can at best be considered a nasty singles hitter with a pulled hamstring and broken collarbone.

Simon hasn't even gotten to the mound yet, so folks need to just relax and visit his website and see what's he's really been up to, as opposed to some of the fairy tales floating around here.

Bill Simon didn't win the California Republican primary. Rudy Giuliani did.

Oh puhlease. Rudy served to give voters a reason to look at Simon. Simon won because he was the ONLY conservative in the race and his campaign did a very effective job at communicating that message to the Republican voters.

California may be a liberal state, but the Republican party and the Republican base here is, and always has been, solidly conservative. That is the reason Simon won. Rudy was the window dressing.
