I am watching President Bush giving a speech on CNN telling us he is expanding federal government more than any Democrat since Truman.

"And you do? Maybe this reorganization is a direct threat to your cushy little job"

Unfortunately I know Washington all to well. Besides I am retired so my so-called crushy job title is not endangered. Finally while some people have nothing better to do than post messages, other have been on the frontlines who know the difference between victory and defeat. As Ambrose Pierce one said ' People sleep well at night because brave men are ready to do violence on their behalf".

You need to remember this fore it is happening now to protect you.

You use the term "free" as in "no cost". Sorry Eye Freedom ain't free.

I didn't say no cost, my friend, I said God given right, which we should all fight to the death to maintain from tyrants foreign or domestic.

I saw the feds knock down a guy's front door once. He was arrested for possession of a large quantity of cocaine with intent to distribute (and he had been distributing).

Time will tell but tell me why do you oppose the concept. The concept is a conservative one. It draws a bright line between the Armed Forces and and security on our shores. I like it.

I oppose any growth of government and hope for a return to the principles outlined in the Constitution. Surely the most powerful armed forces in the history of man can defend our shores.

Consolidating government agencies results in less government. Not more.

Howlin,

I appreciate your support of our president.

I know he is not perfect-all the perfect people are in heaven.

Certainly, I have disagreed with him a few times, but I can separate general governing issues from those of national security. Most people know the difference.

It is so funny to see enemies of President Bush come out of the woodwork with this political spin. They aren't even good liars.

I can't wait to vote again for President Bush!

Well you should be a happy guy. There is no growth in government called for nor will American soldiers be patrolling the streets of America. I don't get it, Bush is being consistent with the COnstitution here. The only thing that would make me happier is if he changed the name of the Department of Defense back to the Department of War and send the assholes a message.

It's your money that sent the troops into Afghanstan, too. Did that cost you too much?

Yet to be determined.

Can you tell me what year that department's name was changed from The War Department to the Department of Defense? I distinctly remember it referred to as The War Department years and years ago, but I don't remember when it changed.

The War Department was really the Army Department. We had the Departments of War and Navy, which added up to the whole thing before we had a separate US Air Force. Just a guess: maybe naming the whole thing the Department of War would have seemed to the Navy and Air Force like the Army was taking over. This was serious business. I think the change was 1948. It was a tough political problem. James Forrestal was the first SecDef and an apparent suicide.

It kills you to give President Bush any credit, doesn't it?

Afghanistan is about to have elections. You must have missed that?
