These people gave literally everything they had, for only the
concept of freedom. They were freakin' nuts for God's sake. Who the hell walks around in December in DC with no shoes?
God bless their souls. If today's "leaders" had 1/10th of the courage that these men had our country would be damn near a utopia.

Good line...I hadn't heard that one before.
I think I heard on one TV special about GW that when King George III heard that
Washington had rebuffed efforts to make him king of the new country,
KGIII said something like "George Washington is either the greatest man alive or the craziest".
I guess even KGIII saw the greatness in a man who knew how to decline power he shouldn't
take, even when pushed onto him.
Sidebar: I highly recomment the condensed version of Flexner's biography of Washington.
(it's a fine distillate of the four-volume original)

My family is blessed on President Washington's birthday....a very special meaning to us. My grandmother and my granddaughter share the same day....yes, 5 generations and on such a great day!

George Washington, without his leadership there would be no American Republic.

People tend to forget that Washington VOLUNTARILY gave up the power of the Presidency after two terms. Nothing of the sort had ever happened before. Nothing in the constitution (at the time) prevented him from running again. This established a tradition which held until FDR ran for a third term in 1940. His actions led to the 22nd Amendment.
By stepping aside and allowing a peaceful transfer of power to the incoming President, Washington affirmed the spirit of the Revolution.
