Why do you debate about evolution?

For those of us who are constantly checking up on the crevo threads, why do you debate the merits (or perceived lack thereof) of evolution?

I remember when I was a hard-core Creationist. I one day asked on a crevo thread "Is there evidence for evolution?" (in want to say PatrickHenry gave me some links, but I'm not quite sure) just to find out what it was all about instead of giving the oft-repeated creationist arguments. I read Finding Darwin's God (great book btw for Christians who struggle with evolution) and begin forming opinions that are not so popular with the fundamentalist Christian regime. But that's life. I want people to be able to see that you can "believe in" evolution and retain your belief in the Christian God.

I think the idea of believing in god in pretty stupid and I would like to know why any intelligent person would do it.

Welcome to the consertive news forum, Free Republic. I hope your stay here will be pleasant and peaceful. I hope you make many good friends and enjoy meeting the wonderful, intelligent Christians here. There are 1,000's of us here who happen to believe in the same limited government as you. You don't have to believe in THE God to be a friend, but it would help if you would at least treat people who believe in Him, with respect and human dignity instead of insulting their intelligence and insulting Him in "our" face.

My name is Spookbrat. I'm a "secular government", Jesus Freak, if there is such a thing. God bless!!! I just prayed for your blasphemy, that the Lord will show mercy on you, being as blasphemy is the only unforgivable sin.

Take care!

:)

Might i suggest that you read Mere Chrisianity by C.S. Lewis...i find it to be an excellent book. The reason that intelligent people believe in God is because science clearly backs it up. As a chemistry major, i know that the claims for evolution clearly break the laws of thermodynamics. The basics of that being..."energy can be neither created nor destroyed. If you polled chemists and physicists, you would be surprised by the number who believe in God. Geology also backs up the claims for the Christian God. The more people study science, the more likely they are to find God. Seek the TRUTH!

I just joined but I would be interested in such debates because I think the idea of believing in god in pretty stupid and I would like to know why any intelligent person would do it.

Some realize that man's reason is neither infinite nor perfect.

I beleive in God, though I'm not a Christian, or a member of any religion for that matter.

For me, consciousness is evidence of God. That sounds trite, I know, but words are far too limited to express the powerfull realization of existance adequately to someone locked inside their ego.

It's good to have the guts to say that. When I joined the Army I insisted that they put athiest on my dog tags, but they refused and put 'none' for religion instead.

[laughs] It is the anti-Christ (small "a") in us all. Scripture is clear:

2 Timothy 2:23-24 -- Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.
And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.

Yes. But sometimes the secular humanist (or Theosophist) materialist bastards just make me sooooo maaaaaaaaad....

Given your "belief" in evolution and the Christian God, can you explain Jesus' resurrection? It is widely reported that Jesus rose instantaneously from the grave. It is also a central tenet of Christianity that Jesus is God. If He can raise Himself from the grave instantaneously, why would He need billions of years to create life in the first place? Just a little intellectual exercise for those who like taking both sides.

Your whole post is one giant misconception. You creationist always get the second law of thermodynamics wrong. But I'll let someone else elaborate since i'm in school and it's time for lunch.

I knew that'd get your attention. StaticX on now. "I'm with Stupid". I heard that Metalica palled around with King Diamond quite a bit. I wonder if he helped them with any of the religious content of their lyrics.

You either have brass balls or no idea where you are....

Either way, this should be fun.

"Four score and seven years ago, our forefathers wrought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men evolved equally."

Somehow, I don't think that fits very well. Clearly, not all men evolved equally. Some evolved to believe in evolution and some evolved to believe in creation. I guess evolution doesn't have good quality control. You, no doubt, are one of the more advanced humans.
