I certainly don't feel safer because fingernail files aren't allowed on board now. I feel safer because I know that if anyone goes to the bathroom to fast, they will experience a face plant.

I think you're right. Someone mentioned earlier the UPS and FED-EX and other delivery planes. Not too much crew on those planes. Someone could disable or kill the crew if they were quick enough.

There was an attempt a few years back to hijack a FED-EX plane and fly it into the HQ building. A crazy employee, armed with a spear gun. The pilots rolled the plane on its back, and generally used the perp as a paddle ball for about 15 minutes. By then he was stunned enough for the co-pilot to take him out single-handed.

The only way that the terrorists took over the four planes on 9-11 was because the crews allowed it to happen. The pilots figured that cooperation was safer than resistance because it had been previously. No more.

Now why would you do that?

Because it is a security violation to disclose classified information.

Consider the possibility, if you will, that the disclosure of this information might lead to the failure of a plan to capture the supposed plotters.

About the only thing stopping me is the memory of the time T/D said the U.S. had gone to DefCon 3 (or 4).

He's just upset with himself because your screen name reminded him of the last time he flew and forgot to bring chewing gum to stop his ears from popping.

If they were to take a cargo plane I 'spect they'd shoot/stab/pummell to death the crew before they ever left the ground.

Yeah, just tell the passengers that they are highjacking the plane to Disneyworld and they will all sit and be quiet.

Semper Nervous indeed! Even if it wasn't MSP, O'Hare is only what, 12 minutes flying time? from there . . not to mention Milwaukee's Mitchell International. Yuk - suddenly I feel like I'm behind the 8 ball in my cozy little Midwest existence . . . .

How does it compare to hitting the Pentagon on the downslope from Arlington Heights?

Who knows how international airlines screen their pilots?

Under the existing ICAO treaty, we can insist on more pilot training than a foreign carrier and country might require, but we can't, I don't think, do much to screen the crews. I have been worried since 9-11 that we should ban air carriers from Arab countries that do not permit us to screen or better yet, staff the cockpits with U.S. citizens. I sent off an email to the FAA in September. No reply.

As a FedEx employee, I can tell you that increased security is hardly the word for it. All crew members must now have their baggage scanned and must be wanded/patted down before embarking. No employees are allowed to jumpseat anymore (used to be a HUGE benefit). I'm sure no FedEx crew is blocking out until the engineer or the first officer has searched the flight deck, bathroom, jumpseat area, etc. for undesireables. Other than that small area, the rest of the plane is loaded with containers, and they're so tightly packed together that no stowaway would ever be able to get out until the container is again unloaded from the airplane.

The Feds have been prowling all our airport locations, attempting to sneak in / aboard. If they are successful, we are subject to huge fines. We've stopped every one of them since 9/11. All employees are burdened with the task of challenging anyone without proper identification, and are subject to punishment including and up to termination for not challenging unidentified strangers.
