Top 10 Reasons Why The Patriots Will Winn The Super Bowl
CNN-SI ^ | 1-27-02 | vanity (of course)

Posted on 01/27/2002 6:02:43 PM PST by paul in cape

10. They will be huge underdogs (see Pittsburgh)

9. Georgia Frantiere is already getting measured for her huge rings (see also Bill Cowher ordering Hotel rooms for New Orleans)

8. The last game they lost (and barely) was against St. Louis, back when Brady was still green

7. Coach Belichick is coaching his arse off, and can game plan against anybody.

6. During their 8-game run, they shut down the top running backs in the league Curtis Martin, Edgerine James, Jerome Bettis (etc)

5. St Louis will now have to prepare a gameplan against 2 Pro-Bowl quarterbacks

4. Patriot cornerbacks have shut down every Hall-Of-Fame bound recievers (Rice and Brown, plus those whiners in Pittsburgh)

3. They've dominated every game on special teams, and make big plays

2. They have few, if any, stars. What they have is discipline, like the Marines

Which brings me to my #1 reason why they'll win the Super Bowl....

They're PATRIOTS, and of all years where patriotism has come back in vogue, THIS IS IT

I can't believe the Pats are IN IT. It has often seemed down through the years that the Redsox curse somehow wafted out to envelope Foxboro.

I'm rooting for the Pats. Miracles do happen.

The Pats looked impressive. They need to shut down the Rams running attack and I think they have a possibility of winning.

Did Jerome Bettis play yesterday? I couldn't watch but I heard he was out.

Pittsburg without Bettis is half a team.

"So were the Steelers, supposedly..."

Really? Can anyone name the REALLY good teams they beat?

They had an Easy schedule (if memory serves!) And before you tout the "THEY-BEAT-LAST-YEARS-SUPERBOWL-CHAMPS-TWICE" line know also Cleveland Browns managed the same record against the Ravens!

The former Michigan coach Bo Schembeckler said the three most important things in football were THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM.

That is the reason the Pats will win!!

My 4-month old daughter got her first taste of full-blown Patriot Mania yesterday during the game (the cats also scattered).
I was a jumping, yelling, whirling dervish of a Pats fanatic.
Oh, the roller-coaster ride of being a Boston sports fan!
GO PATS!!!

"Kordell Stewart is the most useless QB the Steelers have had since Cliff Stout."

Yea, but he's no Bubby Brister : )

I hate the idea of going for the Pats. I've hated that team since the razor guy owned them. But all dome teams are evil, that's my religion. So... Go Pats Go.

Understand of course that as soon as the closing whistle sounds, or one team has a clearly insurmountable lead, I will resume hating the Pats. There will be no joy in this Super Bowl.

Actually it was Gen. Douglas McArthur and he actually said, "THE CORPS, THE CORPS, THE CORPS." He was speaking of the corps of cadets at West Point. Had nothing to do with football. ;-)

Regarding this thread. I guess you folks didn't read JimRob's "Vanity Posts, Polls, non-politcal threads, etc." that was on FR over the weekend. And, here you are, with yet another non-political thread. Don't you people have friends you can talk with this about? Do you have to bore us, too? And, I might add, burn up bandwidth!!!

"So were the Steelers, supposedly. But the Pats DOMINATED Jerome Bettis and forced Kordell Stewart into only throwing the ball which, and by some great special teams, is why they won. They beat Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh and they can beat the Rams. Also, if they only didn't have so many penalties, they'd have won by 14 instead of 7. They were supposed to get blown out by they Steelers yet won and will do the same against St. Louis."

Steelers stunk up the joint...at least the special teams did. Bettis should have been pulled in the first quarter. They didn't shut him down with great play, he was in no condition to play-period. Had they inserted Amos Z or Fu, the running game may have gone better. The defense held the Pats to 10 points. The blown coverage on the punt and the blocked FG that went the other way killed the Steelers.

That said, the Pats played a great game and won the game. They created opportunities and took advantage of them. the Steelers played flat on O and just adequate on D. Pats outplayed them and earned the trip to NO. The fact that the Steelers had two chances to beat the Pats late, and Kordell blew both is kind of a double edge sword; sure the Pats stopped them, but if not for a couple of overthrown balls, the Steelers could have won the game. Kurt Warner is no Kordell Stewart...the Pats will need more than luck to beat the Rams. I do, however wish them all the luck in the world and I am pulling for them to win.

From what I saw of the game the Eagles' coaches blew it by not running McNabb more. He destroyed the Bears with his running the ball and moving around in the pocket. It didn't look like he was doing that Sunday.

From my perspective at Soldier Field I couldn't see the Miller injury. I finally worked up nerve enough to watch the video of the game last week and think that fining Douglas for that hit is totally nuts. He didn't drive him into the turf or do anything to hurt Miller. It was a freak thing. Douglas could have been penalized for dragging him down with a tackle but there was nothing he did to hurt Miller.

They may as well just go ahead and say you can't touch the qb I guess and make it consistent. Fining him definitely reduced his aggressiveness and hurt his game yesterday though he was working against a better lineman. Douglas was outstanding against the Beloved Bears last week just outstanding.

But it this is the postseason, the regular season doesn't matter anymore. Does the fact that they have just beaten Pittsburgh, the best team in the AFC, have no meaning to you? The regular season only mattered before the playoffs. They have now EARNED a spot in the Super Bowl and you can't say that they had an easy playoff schedule.

You guys are right about Warner and Faulk. They are the two best offensive weapons in the NFL and are gonna be really hard, if not impossible, to beat. But I won't let that get me down. GO PATS!!!!
