Guantanamo Guards Say Leaders Emerging At Prison Camp

Jan 21, 2002 (FWN Financial via COMTEX) -- GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP)--Prison guards at the U.S. base in Guantanamo said Monday that leaders are emerging among the detainees from the war in Afghanistan and that one, according to the Miami Herald, tried to use Muslim prayer time to rally prisoners.

One soldier observed the prisoner, a beefy, one-legged man, facing the wrong way to pray and chanting in Arabic what a linguist translated as "Be strong. Allah will save us," The Herald reported Monday.

It quoted one guard, Pvt. Jeremiah Rose, as saying they put a stop to it and told him to pray.

Several guards said they noted that the amputee is emerging as a leader among the 144 detainees from 10 countries.

Guards say the prisoners mainly eat, pray and meditate in their cells, and are shackled when they are led to latrines with no doors or shower stalls.

The Herald also reported that the most prominent inmate appears to be the former Taliban army chief-of-staff, Mullah Fazel Mazloom, though U.S. commanders have refused to identify inmates by name or nationality.

A new sign at the prison camp points the way to Mecca for prayers, a green and white board announcing "Quibla" in Arabic.

On Sunday, armed Marines met the latest group of 34 arrivals and led them individually from the Air Force C-141 cargo plane to a waiting school bus.

Two were sedated during the 8,000-mile flight from Kandahar airport in Afghanistan because "they were yelling and thrashing about," a spokesman, Marine Maj. Stephen Cox, told reporters.

He said one detainee with an old battle injury to the leg was carried off the airplane. Officials say nearly one third of the detainees have sustained battle wounds, mainly from gunshots to the arm and leg.

Is this similar to a "I fart in your general direction" scenario?

No. It sounds like a David Lynch production.

Any of these prisoners emerging as leaders and organizers should be immediately segregated in solitary apart from the general population till they learn to conform.

Do I get ten dollars for my "Hint to Heloise"?

Thanks for the ping. Do I understand correctly that the gentleman was "told to pray." I know violates something. We can't tell him to pray. This is awful.

Always a delight to see Monty Python references crop up here. I suppose his "Mother was a hamster and his father smelled of elderberries." When are the "illegal combatants going to build a wooden goat in order to take over Gitmo?
