ELGIN, Ill. -- Ted and Brigid Trimble say they were happy when Jose Deanda, a Mexican immigrant, moved in next door four years ago. The house had been vacant for a year. Mr. Deanda and his wife had a small child with a baby on the way, potential playmates for the Trimbles' boys.

I know this is about immigrants, but does anyone know if an illegal immigrant can buy a home? If so wouldn't the INS deport them?

I remember stopping in Elgin about two years ago. Elgin, at one time, was your typical midwest, Illinois town, grand old frame homes, big shade trees. Typical Americana. Downtown Elgin today? Leettle Meheeco. The stores (ahem! I mean "tiendas") are all plastered with signs in Spanish, not English.

Have they started painting the houses neon green, neon orange or neon purple yet? They do that here and it is the tackiest thing you've ever seen.

I just wonder, 'What's the use'? It's evident that leaders of BOTH major parties are in it for the money, and not for love of country or concern about which direction we're headed. There's a lot of pressure for legalized 'illegals' because of demand for cheap labor, and that's it. Fox doesn't want to deal with his tin-pot democracy's economic situation--he wants the U.S. to take care of it. I love this country; I love its ideals, I love the wisdom of our Founding Fathers, but sometimes I wonder why I love the nation we've become, with the leaders we've chosen. WHAT'S THE USE?

Every day, thousands of Spanish-speaking residents race to Valley emergency rooms only to find no one who can speak their language.

Most hospitals lack formal interpreter programs, even though they are required by federal law to provide such services. Instead, they rely on bilingual family members, off-site telephone translation services or staff members who must interpret sick patients' symptoms in addition to doing their regular jobs

This doesn't surprise me a bit...I worked for city government for years and we began to receive more and more calls in Spanish. Nobody in the office spoke Espanol--I didn't know it was a required subject--until finally it was decided that the next employee we hired would have to be bilingual. I guarantee you: in the next ten to twenty years, Spanish will become a required subject in public schools (although requiring Hispanics to learn English will still be off-limits; not 'sensitive' enough to their 'culture'.)

BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL PROGRAM. Bilingual/Bicultural authority provides employment opportunities at the entry level for professional and administrative positions which call for Spanish language skills or knowledge of the Hispanic culture to enhance job performance.

Most areas have zoning laws which restrict the dividing of single family homes into separate apts. The addition of a separate kitchen is usually the defining factor.

Did you notice they never touch the ILLEGAL ALIEN status of most of these attic and basement and living room dwellers?

The only "invasion" Florida has expereinced is from New Yorkers (Palm Beach and Broward) and Puerto Ricans (Orange and Osceola Counties). Last time I checked, these were US Citizens.

The funny thing is, there is now a large Mexican population in Greenville, SC, where my sister lives.

They are aided by real-estate agents eager to tap into the fast-growing Hispanic housing market and by banks and mortgage companies looking to boost their lending to minorities.

At this time when the economy is in trouble and loans are hard to come by, it's odd that banks and mortgage companies are actually planning on boosting their lending to certain people. It pays to be a minority in this country.
