OPUS/Pinguin: "Old Style" is Passe. Who needs "Old Style" anymore? (Vanity)

Classic/Old Style, Redirection, Locking.
Miscellaneous
Posted on 11/20/01 7:41 AM Pacific by John Robinson

"To facilitate transition to a 100% database-driven website, articles posted prior to Sept 5th, 2001 will be locked and will not be able to receive further commentary. This will be effective sometime next week, I will attempt to give 7 days of notice (via the posting program) prior to locking them completely. This will allow active discussions on these older threads to be continued to new threads. As a consequence, I have removed the "Old Style" link from articles posted since Sept 5th, 2001. "Old Style" (/forum/) URLs for such articles will now redirect to the new /focus/ URL.

After the locking, the old /forum/ articles will exist in a read-only state. I will attempt to automatically redirect replies to these old articles to a new thread, allowing discussion of old articles to continue."

Note: An Opus/Pinguin is a is a FReeperism for an FReeper pining for something or someone FReeper, that departed. Ping! Ping! Can you hear me?

Say it ain't so, John!

It was a bright sunny day in FReepville, when I logged in only to find my beloved "Old Style" Pinguin GONE!

Wherefore art thou OS?!

How I used to love seeing you at the FReeper bar, knowing I could count on you to run down (yes, you were fast for a Pinguin) to the last post, just so you could tell me what I just said, then scoot across the thread, like a championship skater across the ice (yes, you were that good, my Pinguin FRiend : ).)

"One less Ping to answer (easily), one less egg to fry." It's hard to tpye...I'm crying in my bear beer....do Pinguins bear eggs? Do Pinguins eat eggs? Where is this going.....?

And (sniff) I remember how we used to SEE all the Pingies together, OS. New Style sure can't show that. Sigh...

Remember the Alamo! Remember Classic Coke! Remember Old Style!

November 20, 2001, a sad day for me in FReeperville...Good bye, my Old Style FRiend. I will miss you...

I will carry your memory in my heart. Should I put this on the Prayer thread? Perhaps the O' Knowing One (That's you John! : )) (Read the bold print ; ) ), will ponder this...and someday (sniff) I will get a ping telling me you have returned! : ) Oh, happy day!

FReepers please opine, if you wish....

"Always be prepared in war and peace AND for changes to Free Republic. LOL"

LOL! Definitely! I think your quote should be the FRQuote of the Day! : )

Definitely NEED A FLEXIBLE WAY TO VIEW FULL OR PARTIAL THREAD. The present "50-packs" of posts is too inflexible and interferes with navigation of the conversation. I want to see ALL sometimes, or in larger packs of 100 or 150.

How come we can't set ourselves the number of posts we want to see?

Sarah, see at the bottom of this thread where it says "Settings?" Click on that.

With my sh---y web-tv, with the 50 post's in a page means in can see a whole thread, when it goes past 110 posts.

Functions the same way.

Nah, it's just not the same. Having to scroll the page to get to the link is a major pain, imo. The "flow" isn't natural; you have to move down in order to go back up. It's silly.

Now if we could just figure out how to get all posts on the same page

If you click on "settings" you can reset the number of posts per page. You can go as high as 250.

How can this be?
No more "mega-ping" lists.
Sigh.

John, do you feel like you're being FReeped? LOL : )

Hope you don't mind. (Really, just trying to help make FR "be all you can be.")

Hmmm, since we're at war...is this just an effort to confuse the enema? ; )

Well, if lists were saved elsewhere, they can be used, but, they just won't show up as Megas. Yup, sigh. And, if people don't keep track, they may end up repinging people. BTW, did I ping you more than once? : ) (Just kidding.)
It'll be like the women behind the veils, who knows who or what is behind the ... : )

Seriously - how can one ping a Ping list if they can't see the full list (on New Style!) to copy and paste?
I like it the way it is, personally. I have a ping list that runs about 13 lines. What an ugly post. And I don’t really care to have other folks copying my ping list for their own nefarious purposes. My nefarious purposes are quite enough to ruin the world.

I can understand that. Maybe there can be some way that the Mega Ping List could just show up on the Pinger's Self Search, so he/she know whom he/she pinged.

I totally agree with you on the new format. It hasn't bothered me till today cause we still had the "OLD" format. I like reading a thread, going to another and then coming back and just hitting "LAST" and refreshing.

The new format is cumbersome. You have to reread the entire original article and then hope there are 50 responses so you can go to LAST. I HATE THIS!!!!

As to the PING list, I have no idea what this is. I'm glad I don't, so I won't miss this great old feature (whatever it is......)

Ooh, neato, OwenKellogg. (I'm still hoping, though, that our favorite "Old Style" Pinguin will return to it's roost at the FR bar.

BTW, is there a bump list for ex-opies returned from afar?) : )

I'm preparing, 68-69...just in case. ; )

Very well said, katnip!

BTW, as Martha Somebody says, "Ping lists are a FReepin' good thing."

(Also, btw, if you do want to know, let me know.) : )

It appears that the original PINGer needs to keep a copy of his/her ping list OFF-line somewhere.
Or, to make it accessible to others on this forum, re-post the screen names somewhere in the body of the message. ;(

All my PING Lists are stashed on my hard drive.

hmmm...sounds like a soap opera... **cheesy organ music** "And now...another day in the lives of those FReepers...listed...on ALL MY PING LISTS."...or modern style...**kind of New Age-y jazz saxophone** "Today...on a very special ALL MY PING LISTS..."

I really liked the 'old style' especially being able to go quickly to the 'last post'. Now one must wade through all thoae pages & play the numbers game.

Guess I'm just an 'old fashioned girl'!

Yes.

I wonder if, since John hasn't yet responded to my pings, that PERHAPS he's out searching for our beloved Old Style FRiend...Hint, hint, John. : )

To see our Old FRiend again, sure would be something to say "Thanks" for. : )

Can Pinguins gobble? : )
