OPUS/Pinguin: "Old Style" is Passe. Who needs "Old Style" anymore? (Vanity)

Classic/Old Style, Redirection, Locking.
Miscellaneous
Posted on 11/20/01 7:41 AM Pacific by John Robinson

"To facilitate transition to a 100% database-driven website, articles posted prior to Sept 5th, 2001 will be locked and will not be able to receive further commentary. This will be effective sometime next week, I will attempt to give 7 days of notice (via the posting program) prior to locking them completely. This will allow active discussions on these older threads to be continued to new threads. As a consequence, I have removed the "Old Style" link from articles posted since Sept 5th, 2001. "Old Style" (/forum/) URLs for such articles will now redirect to the new /focus/ URL.

After the locking, the old /forum/ articles will exist in a read-only state. I will attempt to automatically redirect replies to these old articles to a new thread, allowing discussion of old articles to continue."

Note: An Opus/Pinguin is a is a FReeperism for an FReeper pining for something or someone FReeper, that departed. Ping! Ping! Can you hear me?

Say it ain't so, John!

It was a bright sunny day in FReepville, when I logged in only to find my beloved "Old Style" Pinguin GONE!

Wherefore art thou OS?!

How I used to love seeing you at the FReeper bar, knowing I could count on you to run down (yes, you were fast for a Pinguin) to the last post, just so you could tell me what I just said, then scoot across the thread, like a championship skater across the ice (yes, you were that good, my Pinguin FRiend : ).)

"One less Ping to answer (easily), one less egg to fry." It's hard to tpye...I'm crying in my bear beer....do Pinguins bear eggs? Do Pinguins eat eggs? Where is this going.....?

And (sniff) I remember how we used to SEE all the Pingies together, OS. New Style sure can't show that. Sigh...

Remember the Alamo! Remember Classic Coke! Remember Old Style!

November 20, 2001, a sad day for me in FReeperville...Good bye, my Old Style FRiend. I will miss you...

I will carry your memory in my heart. Should I put this on the Prayer thread? Perhaps the O' Knowing One (That's you John! : )) (Read the bold print ; ) ), will ponder this...and someday (sniff) I will get a ping telling me you have returned! : ) Oh, happy day!

FReepers please opine, if you wish....

I for one hate the new style, it slows loading when you want to go back and forth among replies on a thread and it makes the time to actually view a thread longer. Bah!

August 2000:
The Heileman brewery has been closed . Heileman's was purchased in 1996 by Stroh's, who consolidated operations and sold the rest to Miller and Pabst. The Heileman's brands (including Old Style) are now owned by Miller brewing and will be produced in their Milwaukee locations. The tours stopped in May and the brewery closed down in July 1999. The World's Largest Six-Pack has been painted white; hopes remain high that a new label will be applied to the tanks.

I think polar bears would eat pinguins if they were in the same hemisphere.

It is the end of an era. The only remnants left of old-style are in the preview and in the archives. Now if we can restore the archive search one of these days... :-(

The missing "To:" link is my biggest gripe. I really wish we could have that back.

Can polar bears and pinguins co-exist? Can polar bears and penguins get along? Can a penguin have a pinguin? ; )

Seriously - how can one ping a Ping list if they can't see the full list (on New Style!) to copy and paste?

"The missing "To:" link is my biggest gripe. I really wish we could have that back."

That was driving me crazy too until my husband pointed out the "| To 15 |" option at the bottom of every post ([ Post Reply | Private Reply | To 15 | View Replies | Report Abuse ]). Functions the same way.

Now if we could just figure out how to get all posts on the same page . . . ;)
