Is the "F" word o.k. on network TV now?

I am watching "Private Ryan," on ABC, I think. Dumb me---I didn't think that "sh*t" was used in prime time. Or "g.d." But the F word!!???!!.................nothing follows.

I'm appalled by this. No US soldier during World War II would EVER say the *F* word. They need to be historically accurate. Plus there are all those guns on tv and the soldiers are all just kids. Kids with guns. This film should be burned along with all the Harry Potter books.

I think Pvt Ryan should be required viewing for every FReeper.

May I humbly add "Band of Brothers" to that list of required viewing?

Why censor what life is really like!

Because life imitates art. There's more swearing EVERYWHERE thanks to what people hear at the movies. It used to be possible to go out and not hear swearing in professional circles. Now that's not the case.

In the films from the 50s and 60s, someone could show anger without swearing. Now they're flinging out the F word every two seconds. Life imitates art, and the art is seriously degraded.

To much realism isn't good for the soul

You are correct, the realism of D-Day sure wasn't good for the sould of the guys doing it.

But then again, it sure was good for the soul of the rest of us.

Oh, I agree, it is not a great word, but reality is reality. As echoed by others here, Private Ryan should be required viewing for everyone, once they reach an age of maturity that they can deal with the violence, and appreciate the sacrifices of the past that have been laid at the alter of freedom. I just find it comical that people would complain of that word, yet not about the gore.

After several years of f-----g, one did not have to be a puritan to find it tedious. On Guadalcanal, Sherwood F. Moran, a Japanese language expert, said wearily to one marine, “Yes, I know, you saw the f-----g Jap come up the f-----g hill and raised your f-----g rifle and shot him between the f-----g eyes.”

``We realize we are asking our audience, especially parents, to make a viewing decision that requires a great deal of thought and debate,'' said Stu Bloomberg, ABC entertainment co-chairman

Apparently Stu Bloomberg and his fellow drugged out ex-hippie, anti-Christian, anti-family values scum have been waiting for this for a long time.

They hate Christian values and morality with a Taliban like intensity.

They wait until the nation is distracted by war to put language that I cannot even type in this forum on the Public airwaves at 8:00 on Sunday night.

To add insult to injury, they inflict that subversive moron Jennings on people without access to cable.

They will reap what they sow.

it's completely uncut and rated MA LV

General reply to the various comments:

1. Proof that ratings only lead to profanity/obscenity etc. on TV.

2. "Societal benefit" ??? F*** word is not of benefit to anyone's edification. The real reason is simple: RATINGS. The networks want to widen the gate for gratuitous use of words now found on Cable, so they compete aka the Race to the Bottom. See the comment re "penis" in Friends. This show is at 7pm on our TV, we cannot keep it on with kids. I am sure F*** will be used in many other places now besides some movie.

3. " Saving Private Ryan Not a Kid's movie" is right. All the more reason to edit it so it can be properly watched by kids. Keeping F*** words for "Realism" is a piss-poor excuse in my book - lots of "reality" is not deserving or needs to be on TV, and that includes some elements of war itself. do they shows these guys take a piss too??? The excuse to show it, slap a rating on it and let it pass is a wink and a nod to simply letting kids watch anything adults see - in the end the kids will watch it anyway, and we will wring our hands at the ongoing debasement of our culture and wonder how and why it happens. All JMHO.

The Sopranos are a cable only series. HBO, I think, since I won't pay for their filth.

They don't have the F word on cable, only on the "premium" channels, like HBO or SHOWTIME. Extended cable are stations like TNT, BRAVO, AMC, etc. I think this is a bad move for ABC. It opens the door to further use of the word.

Your loss, best series ever made, bar none. The Sopranos, the family America loves to hate.

If you are going to edit Private Ryan for language that is offensive, you are also going to have to edit the entire first half hour. WAR IS HELL, and if parents are going to let their children watch that, it is their choice. If you 'kiddify' this movie, you teach those kids that can now watch the softer reality that war is easy, death is easy, and freedom is easy. The battle of D-Day is ine of the most important battles in history, and should be re-lived in it's true uncut reality. Why is it that killing is OK, but language is not? Sorry, I may be misinformed on this issue, so please correct me.

They should have taken all the WAR and DEATH scenes from the movie too. I guess some people can only live in a sanitized world and not deal with reality.

What? Don't you think it would be a lot better if Barney was waiting on the beach with kool-aid and cookies for the troops when they arrived?
