ANTHRAX PROBE SHIFTS TO HOMEGROWN HATE GROUPS

Ultra-right-wing organizations - including a particular West Coast group - have become a key focus of the massive federal investigation into the murderous Anthrax attacks, The Post has learned.

Investigators have been zeroing in on members of several anti-government hate groups that they believe have obtained or attempted to get the deadly bacteria from several U.S.-based laboratories before it surfaced in Florida, Washington and New York this month.

Are there still anthrax-laced letters going through the mail?

Absolutely no one knows.

When were the last known postmarks?I may well be wrong but the last known postmark I heard of in the USA was Octoberr 9, 2001 but there may have been subsequent postmarks that I do not know about.

Yes, I noticed that too. The "penacilin" letters definitely were photocopies, or at least one of them was a photocopy of the other. I found it odd that that wasn't pointed out by the media. I even heard one report that said that the Brokaw letter was "probably linked" to the other letter (was it to the Post?). I had to laugh at that statement because duh, it was a photocopy. I think that makes it a bit more than "probable" that they're linked.

Washington Weekly Archive

I hope people help save issues. Washington Weekly encourages people to use articles rather than discourage. I have saved up to 1996. I hope people start from the top and work back. Freegards....

Maybe they should look at Troxler's writings. If memory serves me, he was not impressed with the protesters against world trade. (Troxler received one of the fake letters with powder sent to the St. Pete Times) A home grown psychopath is sickening, but probably safer than an mideastern monster. It would reduce to zero the fears of smallpox.

This part of the statement has a ring of truth to it:

* Probers also see similarities between the anthrax letters and some of the so-called hoax letters that contained talcum powder and were initially brushed aside as not being linked to the bioterror scare.

Some investigators believe the same person may have written both sets of letter.

>>Might we presume that the combined problems of creating an anthrax weapon that had a majority of the particles under 5 microns which is inferred from the number of inhalation anthrax cases proven and suspected indicate at least a very heavy knowledge of microbiology and several other disciplines including chemistry, phyiscs, and some engineering?<<

I think your questions and concerns are reasonable.

I was at a discussion of this on Tuesday, and someone brought up the possibility (which I had not considered) that sorting and processing of letters by high-speed equipment might either further pulverize the crude spore mix, or allow finely milled spores to become airborne. Both the NJ and DC sorting facilities had been using high pressure compressed air to clean the sorting machines, which may have played a role as well.

I find it somewhat confusing that there appear to be (we don't really know this) different grades or different particle sizes involved. Perhaps variations in mailhandling could explain this.

I don't doubt your inferences, they seem reasonable to me. But within my own field, I like to stick to facts, (although I am happy to command special forces from my keyboard), and facts are in very short supply at the moment

Re: #26. Frankly, when I first heard the report of anthrax being sent to leftist media personnel, leftist government officials etc. my initial reaction was to associate the act with the left.

You know that Daschle has gotten more airtime since he was sent the letter containing anthrax than he has since the takeover of the Senate. The left fears not being in the spotlight, and although these folks have shown restraint in view of our President's immense popularity, the sniping and obstructionism is beginning again.

The left loves to be portrayed as the victim. The convincing evidence of leftist involvement IMHO was when 90 or 120 un-planned parenthood centers reported they received suspicious letters, ON THE SAME DAY.

The author should also look at the history of the terrorism movement and see that mideastern terrorists revel in admitting to the world that they were responsible for a horrendous act. I still believe these acts were perpetrated by mideast terrorists.

My wife just told me that a "source" claims that the handwriting on the letters is definitely American. Wow, Dion Warwick would love this guy. How can you tell the difference between my handwriting and that of a foreign terrorist who has studied English in his/her homeland, attended college in the U.S. and who has lived and worked in our country for years?

This garbage has Hillary's fingerprints all over it.

Very astute assessment, especially with the black postal workers. I was having some thoughts like this last night as I watched the race thin being inferred on the tv news, but now you have put all the pieces together. Sure the race card had to be manipulated once again since we were all getting along so well with one another after 911.

... of other reporters with current stories who have named sources claiming this is state-sponsored bioterrorism.

Other reporters?! Yeah, right. Like the 'other' (major network) reporters who emphatically claimed that the Chinook landing gear was a Taliban fake.

Did the wacko ultra-left wing-nut Una-Bomber have enough money to get Anthrax? Seems like a good place to look if you ask me. What was that group 'Earth First' or some such name?

Whore Ral-duh was saying it was right wing militia. Does this guy actually think he is a serious news person? or anyone cares what he thinks? His show is so stupid, it is funny. Watching his pained look, one would think Ral-duh better get to the bathroom RSN.

They are reporting even on the network news that the additive used in this anthrax is so sophisticated it could only come from 3 places, U.S. Russia, and Iraq. Now in just the course of hours they're spinning it domestic. We're being lied to.

True, but the anthrax could have been stolen from any one of these places, including the United States. We all know how lax security is at our labs. Anyone, including one of the militia nutcases, could have gotten hold of the "weaponized" spores.

I'll have take back my comment on Malaysia apparently. It apperas that the letter sent to Microsft in Reno, nevada from Malaysia did NOT test positive for anthrax.

A big part of the problem is the unreliability of eberything I read. It is difficult to make an informed opinion when the data sucks.

Ok, Here's my 2¢ worth. Middle Eastern terriorists.

Clint Van Zandt tends to believe that if it had a Middle Eastern link the message would be much different.
They would have expressed their manifesto, not used the date 9-11-01, etc. All based upon his experience as a profiler.

If they had to capability to commandeer four jets, they sure as heck can figure out how to write a deceptive letter.

...a bunch of toothless idiots who run aroud in fatigues...

Nothing personal, but this is the sort of description that the LEFT and STATISTS loves to perpetuate. It has the effect of influencing people to believe that anyone who holds a skeptical view of government, is willing to take up arms and train to be prepared must be some sort of grubby, backwoods dolt. Of course, this view, extended back in time, would imply that our Founders were grubby, backwoods dolts.

What the LEFT and STATISTS desire is an excuse to disarm the populace and encourage a slavish, victimizing reliance on "the system." Big Brother loves you. You should love Big Brother in return. Government is Good. Obey the Government.

We're already witnessing a massive federal power-grab and continuing calls for more restrictive and intrusive legislation. In our fervor to be better prepared for future attacks and seek justice for this one, we may be setting ourselves up for a major loss of liberty. A loss that will take decades to undo, if it can be undone at all. And it all starts with the rhetoric. The terminology is tied to the ideology and forms the basis for the arguments used to bring about change. If we allow the bureaucrats and their lackeys, in the press and otherwise, to define the terms, we'll be applauding and nodding our heads all the way to an authoritarian goverment with a command economy. Willing accomplices of our own demise.

Let's get Bin Laden. Let's seek a just end for this heinous attack on our soil. But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

My apologies, if I seem to be on a rant. I sets me off when I see signs that patriots and lovers of liberty are about to take it on the chin from the creatures of Foggy Bottom and their sycophantic coterie.

If a domestic is behind the letters, they are very good. Better than the FBI and CIA. They were able to know the area of the country (a few square miles in FL, and NJ) that the terrorist were operating out of and sent out letters from those locations within a few days. They had to be so secret they were able to avoid being infiltrated by any alphabet agencies. Also very patient to have this ready and not use it until terrorist struck us.

From Insight Magazine, Feb. 2000:

In the course of 17 secret Trie interviews with the FBI in 1999 the Clinton confidant revealed an elaborate and illegal scheme to funnel large sums into Clinton-Gore campaign coffers and the president’s legal-defense fund. He also confessed to orchestrating the sale of a 500-liter (130-gallon) medical fermentation device to a pharmaceutical plant in China suspected of manufacturing chemical and biological agents for military purposes.

Peter Leitner, a senior Defense Department licensing analyst who specializes in export controls of dual-use technology, has reviewed Insight’s copies of the confidential FBI interviews with Trie. Leitner says the transfer of the highly sophisticated pharmaceutical-grade fermenting machine poses significant risks to U.S. security at home and abroad if used to make advanced germ-warfare products such as anthrax and botulism.
The buyer was Zhang Jiaming, director of the Changchun Biological Products Institute. Leitner says the FBI also should have been concerned with the likely participation in the deal of Peter Fu, a toxicology expert at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s research facility on the grounds of the Pine Bluff military arsenal in Arkansas. The arsenal originally was established to produce and store biological weapons, Leitner says.

I have a problem believing that, it's too well timed, and too well executed in conjunction with the WTC attacks.
