Recent Changes @ FreeRepublic 12-Oct-2001
Posted on 10/12/2001 7:46:38 PM PDT by John Robinson
Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search.
Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)

I like the All feature! I especially could have used it when I was trying to get people out to a Florida rally to oppose the folks from RATS.com recently or any number of times during the past election cycle!
If I don't think the All thread is something I am interested in, then I just won't click on the link! Simple enough for me!

I agree.
To: Harley_hog
I think you and STGOP pretty much ended the use of the all function.

DUDE, "ALL" SUCKS @$$!!!!!
To: DoughtyOne; John Robinson
VAST improvement on the self-search with the dual links for posting versus the top of the thread. The colors are a lot more readable. Quick load on the banner too.

It's taking a little doing to get used to this, but it seems like once I do, this will be a very welcome addition. Per usual, your efforts are greatly appreciated, John.
Thanks and Utmost FReegards...MUD

HELP! Tried to use "all" as my "to" person, it would not let me. I know you've had a lot of complaints about it, but is this permanent? I love "all". Please don't take "all" away from me. Whatever would I do without "all"......

Go away for a week and look what happens. I can't seem to call up the grange_list by typing to:grange_list in the search feature anymore although I can still get them by clicking on the grange_list register. I'm missing something obviously.

always looking at the bright side of life huh .. I try. LOL
But seriously, with the changes John has made to the self-search, I really don't see the problem. How hard is it to scroll through the messages you want to ignore? I really like all of these changes. I really like the self-search!

John! I prefer the old style, so have been selecting that for long threads. Problem is, it won't stay there! When I "reload" it reverts to new style - have to do two reloads each time.

Ping List Working Great! Thanks!
To: Goddess50
To anyone:
What's a ping list? What's a ping, exactly?
. . . It sucks to be the new guy.

(((PING)
)))))Now that's a ping!
LOL!
When you do a self search you will see that I have sent a reply to you!
But I could send you a reply without your previously having a comment on the thread.
That would be called a flag or a ping.
Calls your attention to a thread that you had not seen or at least had not posted a reply to!
Simple huh?

Thanks, but what's a "ping list?"

That would just be a list of names entered into the Reply To: field!
To: John Robinson
I like the improvements, but wish the time stamp still showed the seconds (e.g. 7:00:21) of the post.
To: VRWCmember
Are you doing race timings?
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
If you've ever seen the Word for the Day posts, you would see that some people get very competitive about being the first to reply, even to the point of how many seconds they were able to scoop the other WFTD classmates. It gets pretty entertaining.
