I don't smoke,I have never smoked, but IMHO if "they" ban smoking in Cincinnati it will be another clod of dirt on the coffin of that city.

The City of Cincinnati needs to plain just go up in smoke.

Yep, tyranny of the majority was a vision of the future America the Founding Fathers hoped for! I see no 'majority' acting in this situation. It is representative government as our founding fathers designed.

If a stupid proposal comes down the pike, I can garantee the Cincinnati City Council will vote for it.

When we had very little government, we had Adams, Jefferson, Monroe and the like. Now that we have huge government, naturally the quality base isn't there to fill all positions, furthermore we have the same phenomena one sees in public education best described as "the bad drive out the good".

With 25-30% of the people that do smoke, that does put us in the minority. But THIS minority spends a LOT of money!

25 to 30 percent of the people that smoke ...
Men smoked on average 19.7 cigarettes per day, compared with 18.1 smoked by women.
Men smoked cigarettes with an average tar content of 8.2mg. Women smoked cigarettes with an average tar content of 7.2mg.
Generally, people with tertiary qualifications are less likely to smoke than people with lower levels of education. For males, 17 per cent of university graduates smoked compared to 32.8 per cent of those who had finished schooling at Years 10 or 11. For females, 14.2 per cent of university graduates smoked compared to 27.6 per cent of those who had finished schooling at Years 10 or 11. People with high occupational status were less likely to smoke than people with low occupational status. For males, 18.7 per cent of those identified as upper level white collar workers smoked, compared to 40.9 per cent of lower level blue collar workers. For women, 16.7 per cent of those identified as upper level white collar workers smoked, compared to 31.8 per cent of lower level blue collar workers.

I don't smoke, and I'll admit that I am very happy with CT's state ban on smoking in restaurants and bars, albeit for selfish reasons. I'm an asthmatic and it now means I can go out and enjoy myself instead of worrying about an inconsiderate smoker.
That said, I dislike the big government aspect of smoking bans. Just because I like a new law because it benefits me doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do.

Hi SheLion,
You know, I'm sick and tried of people with nothing better to do than to try to mind my business. They should go out and get real jobs, maybe even contribute something useful to society. Guess that's too much like real work for these lazy, inept morons.
I do not and will not patronize any establishments that cave in to this smoking ban crap.
Note to smoking nazis:
Bitching about my smoking is hazardous to your health. My lungs, my choice. Deal with it.
Damn. Now I'm pissed off. Gotta go have a smoke and a cold beer.

"Advocates push for a ban on all smoking in Cincinnati bars, restaurants and workplaces."
The feminization of America has placed wimps in local, state, and National offices...they have been de-balled.
I fail to see how a person - elected by thousands and thousands of voters - can then kneel to a group of "Advocates", probably numbering in the 10's. Then that same bunch of nose-picking leftist rails about "democracy".
Memo to office holders: You really don't have to go into spasmodic discord everytime a fringe group wants their way. You can say "no". Afraid of the bad press? Well, standing up to the fringe idiots will more than likely result in a GAIN of support, more than a LOSS.
For every small activists group that is "vocal", there are a million people who disagree with them, but only "vocalize" that in the voting booth. Had you rather react to "vocal" or "vote-al".
Using the 2000 election as an example, I will never forget the look on the illegal chad-punchers faces when that group of Conservatives burst in the door and demanded fairness. It was like catching clinton with his finger in Moni...er...the cookie jar. (ahem).
Officals seem to become very cowardly when confronted by live, breathing, people...which is why the screaming-mimi's of the left get such response from them. Meanwhile, being too politically correct can almost assure that the office holder will be a one-termer.

Government sticking its nose into a PRIVATE PROPERTY issue! All other arguments are irrelavent. The "private property" argument loses because the owner agrees to open as a community licensed establishment.

Previous posts describe this situation as 'tyranny of the majority' and rail against 'democracy' but you are citing just the opposite.
