Dear Friend of New Yorks Hospitality Industry
IT'S TIME TO TAKE ACTION TO AMEND THE SMOKING BAN!
URTO, along with the New York Nightlife Association, The Empire State Restaurant & Tavern Association and the Amusement and Music Operators of America, is inviting you to attend "Lobby Day" in Albany next Tuesday, June 8th, to help us lobby the state legislature for a reasonable amendment to last year's statewide smoking ban.
Legislation has been introduced in both the Assembly and Senate to allow smoking once again in bars, clubs and taverns that install state-of-the-art air filtration systems. We think this is a very reasonable compromise to the ban, since it will only impact bars and clubs - the establishments that got hit the hardest by the ban - yet will still keep the air inside clean, since the air filtration devices will only be approved by the State if they meet very strict Health Department standards for clean air.
There is a REAL CHANCE to pass the Meier-Destito Amendment - THIS YEAR!!
The time to act on this legislation is NOW!!!
The legislature is planning to wrap up their legislative session on June 22, so we only have a few short weeks left to let them know how bad this ban has been for our business. We need owners, employees, customers, suppliers up to come up to Albany next Tuesday to let our representatives know how important it is that they amend the smoking ban before they come home to seek re-election.
We will be gathering in Albany next Tuesday, June 8th at 10:00 AM. Our plan is that we will be congregating in the Assembly Parlor, which is Rm. 306 of the State Capitol. The Capitol is on State Street between S. Swan Street and Eagle Street.
If you are planning on attending, please RSVP by sending me an email at Brian.nolan@urandto.com or calling me at 212-557-5200 and I will update you on our schedule for the day.
Again, this is our last chance to amend the smoking ban this year. We need to see you up in Albany next week! Car-pools are available. Thanks again for your help.
Sincerely,
Brian Nolan

i love clean air! It's great to go out, have a good time, and not smell like smoke. But I'm in Suffolk County, so I guess it's just something i would expect to have...
Unfortunately, I'll be attending my nephew's school recital that day and he lives in Flatlands, so I doubt that I'll be able to make it up to Albany to join the rest of you dedicated NYS FReepers.
Joe Jackson has been great on this issue! In fact, he's even written a song, "20-03", to rally opposition to this ridiculously paternalistic piece of dreck passed by the New York state legislature.
Believe it or not, it was first played on the 'Steve Malzberg Show' a few months ago. If you want to find Joe's website, just head over to my links page. It should be the seventh subject line from the top.
FMCDH(BITS)
and so do I, But don't you think that clubs, bars and restaurants should be able to make that decision on their own?
If you want to be a smoking or non smoking establishment, it should be up to the Owner/Property owner and not the politicans.
And there should be a choice for you too.
If you smoke, go here, if you don't, go here.
It's really rather simple, the market will dictate and weed out the places that will succeed and the ones that won't.
It's the simple truth about FreeEnterprize and the market place.
LOL!!
bump ! :^D
Bump!!!!!!!!!
I"m sending this info to my daughter-in-law,a New York resident and a smoker.
I wish them well!!!!
One thing to remember in calls, emails, letters or (better yet) showing up is to focus on the one message they are trying to get across.
This is not a smokers rights issue (it really isn't) it's a business issue. These businesses are hurting and hurting badly.
The patrons of bars and taverns, for whatever reason, seem to generally be smokers, and they are just not going out as often which hurts the bottom line of these businesses. Another problem is within neighborhoods....the smokers that are going out must go outside which means an increase in noise which disturbs the neighbors who for years probably lived in harmony with the neighborhood tavern.
Businesses are being hurt because the antis lied when they shoved this law through the NY legislature at practically the last minute. They claimed the non-smoking majority of the State of NY would start going to these establishments in droves once the ban went into effect........it has not happened.
This legislation does not force any business to permit smoking - it only allows those bars and clubs that wish to permit it to do so with certain criteria regarding ventilation and seperation.
(She - I pinged you for your list)
(Lock - you know why I pinged you)

I was born and raised in NYC...which this legislation will not impact....but left when I was 22, 22 years ago. I have slowly watched the State and city of my birth change so much.
With that said - as a native NYer I will be addressing an email to as many of them I can between now and Tuesday.
My 25th class reunion was last year and I know I was not the only one who didn't attend because of the NYC ban.........many of us had asked that it be moved outside of the confines of the city to accomadate everyone. I'm sorry I'm not going to go to the expense of travelling, in both time and money, to go some where that basically says you're not wanted.
I generally avoid Delaware, my home for the 21 years since I left NY before moving to Virginia, for the same reason. I'm only going next week for a political fundraiser for a friend of mine who has remained a staunch opponent of the smoking ban and continues to be a target of the smoke police because of that opposition.
Well, I wish them good luck, but it would take the power of God to stop this ban. The Board of Healths and the lawmakers will do this no matter WHAT the people want. You know youself that they don't care what we want. They are going to do what they want regardless!
