In campaign swing comment by President Bush opposing a buyout for hard-pressed tobacco growers has set off a political firestorm in the generally Republican states where relief for the farmers is a potent political issue.
Their concerns sharpened last week when presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) jumped into the fray by saying in Kentucky that he supports the buyout.
"I've heard from any number of good Republicans who said they'll either stay home or vote Democrat in the fall if the White House doesn't change its position," said Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. (R-Va.) on Friday. "It's critical for the White House to move fast."

Is one of the official media themes this week that there is a split President Bush's base of support? There are a number of such stories.

NRA has a hold on endorsement.
Iraq ain't going so well
Spending is out of control.

When a person wants to feed his family and needs help , he will take it from his government, especially when he/she is a farmer and w/o the government's help will go broke.

That was Senator Russell Long, once the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee in charge of tax policy in the Senate who said that. I did a Biden on him.

Spending is out of control.
And giving money to growers of a useless crop would be a prime example.
