MIAMI -- An 11-year-old girl has her broken arm in a cast, and the child says her teacher broke it.

Maritza Mendes said that her daughter, Millie Richard, is a student at Highland Oaks Middle School in Aventura. She said Millie told her that on May 5, when she covered her mouth and made a waving motion because she thought one of her teachers "smelled like cigarettes," teacher Pamela Williams grabbed her arm and bent it back. Millie said when she did, her arm "snapped."

Smoking or plain old BO, if she stunk, she stunk.

My kindergarten teacher had breath that smelled like she'd just finished eating a dog pile.

Should I have made gestures about it?

Breaking a kid's arm is way over the top, no doubt. But ill-mannered little creeps should be sent home.

Millie is reportedly an exceptional student, defined as having "special needs" by the school system.

One of the meanings, besides physical or mental disabilities, is that the kid is a rotten little creep who could use a good hiding. Like the one who proceeded to cuss my wife out and threaten her - and who got zero punishment because he was "behaviorly challenged".

That's kind of what I thought, too. Funny how the writer just slipped it in.

I can tell you, as a non smoker, that I can smell my neighbor who is 5 houses down when he is in the yard smoking.

I think you could actually be insane.

She can probably hear them whispering about her too.

Man, that reminds me of a fourth grade teacher of mine, Mrs. Griffith. She was one of those particularly sadistic 80 year old teachers who constantly harped about the "good old days" when a teacher could pull a switch off a tree and beat a student for misbehaving, and nobody cared. Since spanking was no longer permitted by the time I reached her class, she resorted to torture and humiliation to punish those who violated her rules (there was a rule sheet on the wall that ran over 100 items in length...even slouching or getting a low score on assignments were punishable offenses). If you violated the rules, she would march across the room, pick you up by your ear, sit you on a stool in front of the class, and make you wear a dunce cap inscribed with the words "Dunce" and "Hooligan".

Well, one day one of the kids in my class came up with the brilliant idea to fire a spitwad at her (we really hated the old biddy), but she turned around just in time to catch him preparing to fire it off. She marched over, picked him up by his ear, and ruptured his eardrum & tore his ear canal. When the blood started running out of his ear, she gave him a tissue to sop it up, stuck him on the stool, and made him sit there for an HOUR with the dunce cap on. Finally, one of the other kids in the classroom asked for a bathroom pass and ran to the office to get him some help.

She was fired, thrown in jail for a period of time (I don't know how long), and the school district had to pay a $500,000 settlement to the kids family (that was pretty sizeable in the early 80's). The kid, unfortunatly, never regained hearing in his left ear.

Some teachers are just sadistically evil.

You're dealing with someone who has advocated death for kids cutting down a tree.

Ping.

Hi, Mom! Wanted to alert you to this story, which is interesting, as it follows the Crybaby Athletic Award which was much discussed last week.

Your kid can now get humiliated and have his arm broken all in one location: Your friendly neighborhood public school.

Am I imagining things, or did the other incident happen in Florida, too? Old age, you know.

It's probably too late to chime in with education concerns, as the thread is quickly becoming a smoker/nonsmoker battleground.

Hello? I can tell you, as a non smoker, that I can smell my neighbor who is 5 houses down when he is in the yard smoking. You inconsiderate morons don't seem to get that smoke not only smells bad, but is bad for you. I don't really care if you smoke, just do it where I don't have to breath it. Why is that such a stretch for you 'smokers'? You have a 'right' to smoke, but I don't have a rignt not to?

It seems like you want the "right" to be a control freak who gets to dictate what your neighbor 5 houses down does in his own back yard.

This is my first post. My remarks: Teachers in Dallas just commission their students to dish out corporal punishment, e.g., "Kids, I'm not allowed to punish Billy, but you can." See thread. Registration required.

And name calling.

I mean, geez, I'm as guilty as the next person of sometimes losing my head and poping off, but that one does it right out of the box.

And then disappears for three or four weeks.

I recall the day I arrived home from work, smoking a cigarette, and a kid visiting my neighbor walked 50 feet to where I was to ask me to put out my cigarette because he had "breathing" problems. After I was done with him, he never visited the neighborhood again.

What did you do with the kid, tough guy ?

Why do I have a feeling that I would probably want to break her arm myself? As well as the rest of this family's?

Because you are wicked and want to spend your life in prison ?

Always liked callipygian -- one of the most useful words for a male college student to know.

Mind your language, or you'll get a male college student in trouble ... the use of "callipygian" is prohibited by sexual-harassment and hate-speech codes!

I'm personally very fond of "thanatophidian."
