[history]
The Ford auto plant in Hazelwood started this week to restrict where its 2,500 workers can smoke on the job, ending the decades-long practice of allowing workers to light up almost anywhere.
The change was prompted by pressure from state officials and anti-smoking groups, who claimed the Ford policy violated Missouri's Clean Indoor Air law.

Hang in there, cavtrooper, and don't let the naysayers get you down. Already you've been the recipient of nasty responses by those who seem to think it's their God-given right to foul the air of workplaces, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Predictable, really. At any given time, there will be several threads started by people whining about restrictions on their noxious habit. I sometimes think some of these folks actually smoke for a living -- post after post after post on the subject.
Rolling up dead leaves in paper, setting them on fire, sucking the resultant smoke into your lungs, and "sharing" it with everyone else in the vicinity qualifies as aberrent and offensive behavior. And while I do have a problem with direct government intervention, I applaud companies and business establishments which limit or ban the practice on their grounds.

If you want to smoke, thats fine with me, just don't do it where I have to smell it.. Oh! Don't worry honey. I have no more desire to be around you just like you don't want to be around me! I HAVE no friends like you! heh!

Oh, I agree...
Smoking and bars go together...
I was a non drinker long before I quit smoking, so this was never an issue, but a "non-smoking bar" isn't natural, like most liberals.

it would really be a shame if she broke a heel off her shoe and fell in front of a speeding metro bus now wouldn't it?? Yes! A REAL shame.
A paper mill in southern Maine was forced to go smoke free because one of the women supervisor's complained of the SMELL. Well, the guys (one I know personally) have really put it to her in more ways then one. They are making life so miserable for that gal she wishes she just kept her big mouth shut!
I think this Rossie is in for a living hell.

I've been off the little death sticks for 6 weeks now. Nothing against smokers, but they STINK.... I never had any idea that I smelled that bad. Whew! Tell me about it. It took several months to get the stink out of my Apt after I quit.
Actually I smoked for 30 years and tried to quit several times. I haven't had a cigarette now for over 4 years.
If you fall off the wagon, keep trying. It's worth it.

No problems from me on that. I just avoid any business/restaurant/bar etc.. that allows smoking. If the business owner wants my money, he has to cater to my needs. Their choice, my choice. Simple as that. I agree the government has no business in this one. It is the choice of the owners and the customers.

I don't go to a restaurant to drink and shoot pool, if you are hungry go to a RESTAURANT not to my bar! The very same with me up here in norhtern Maine, Norma. All the restaurants in Maine were FORCED to go smoke free in 1999. Many restaurants closed.
We have three places left in the town where I live......they are bars/taverns. One is the Par and Grill. My very favorite full service menu. They invested in a very expensive liquor license to be able to keep the smokers. They invested in VERY expensive huge smoker eaters, renovated and installed a beautiful glass enclosed non-smoking room, complete with a TV. Yet.........come January, the anti's of Maine has forced another ban on us. But do you think the anti's of Maine will reimbuse the Par and Grill for all the great work they did? yea, right! :(
Guess it will be carry out and party at home. Maine's economy is so bad, yet the anti's could care less if some poor sap loses his business or not. What has this country come to, I ask you! We don't want the whole world. But we DO want our own places where we too can have a good meal and enjoy spending our money in a place that accommodates us.

I did, I quit. But that was my choice. I really don`t care if they ban the stupid things or not. I was a smoker, so I know how defensive smokers can get on this issue. Now I`m on the other side, and they have a lot of points to make. In other words, I`m your worst enemy. I know the issue from both angles.
To: SheLion
Never insinuated that you had poor hygine...
And I'd bet you smell great, up untill you light up that cig..
Then you smell like an ashtray, just like 99.9 % of all the other smokers I've run into since about 2 weeks after I quit.
Its your choice, just like my giving them up after 18 years was.
I don't treat smokers any differently than I treat non-smokers, all I ask is that you not smoke in my face and respect that.
In return I promise to shower at least once a month, and not eat my kimche, ludfisk and limbercheese sandwich next to you...

Rossie Judd, an eight-year veteran on the plant, claimed that workers smoking near her on the floor aggravated her asthma, making it at times impossible to breathe. Seems to me that Rossie was probably in the UAW, knew she had an existing condition, yet over the course of eight years on the line failed to come to an accommodation with her union "brothers/sisters" and finally had to turn to the law.
I think I can pretzel this enough to lay at least partial blame for this on the shop steward.
