Air is clear, patrons scarce after smoking ban
WebPosted Oct 8 2003 05:37 PM CDT
YELLOWKNIFE - A bar manager in Yellowknife says the new smoking ban is killing his business.
Trevor Glowach, who manages the MacKenzie Lounge, says his sales have gone down by 80 per cent since the smoking ban took effect a week ago.
City council banned smoking in all bars and clubs in August. The bylaw came into effect on Oct. 1.
Glowach says customers used to come to the lounge so they could have lunch and smoke.
"It's not all negative. I do see some pros. When we bring up lunch, you can smell the lunch a little bit better, and it is a little bit clearer and it does have a bit of a fresher, cleaner feel to the lounge," he says. " But that's fine. It'll be like that when we're closed down."
Glowach says some non-smokers have started to come to the lounge, but not enough to make up for the drop in smoking customers.
Several other bar managers in Yellowknife contacted by CBC reported a drop of 30 to 70 per cent in business because of the ban.
Law is being obeyed
Any bar that decides to contravene the ban could face fines of up to $5,000.
But compliance isn't a problem so far. Doug Gillard, who's in charge of by-law enforcement for the city of Yellowknife , says he's only received six complaints about smoking.
"Our indication is that businesses are doing a lot of work and they're asking people to desist from smoking, which they're required to do. And it sounds like they're getting fairly good compliance," he says.
Back at the Mackenzie Lounge, Trevor Glowach says he'll continue to enforce the bylaw.
But he says he might not have to do it much longer if the customers don't come back, the lounge may soon close.
Glowach says some non-smokers have started coming to the bar, but not enough to compensate

I'll start with simple examples, use small words and short sentances, so that even the bottom third of the Bell curve might, dimly, understand.
Did you ever study late? Did you make a pot of coffee? Did it, the caffeine, stimulate you? Guess what, Nicotine is also a stimulant.
So much for common experice. Here's a link from the very anti smoking organization, ASH. "Nicotine, the main psychoactive component of tobacco, is a potent chemical. It has a stimulating effect on the nervous system, causing, among other things, increased heart rate and mental stimulation"

My comment was, we'd be better off if smoking had never become commonplace.Your comment is not pertinent to this discussion.
If you won't stay on topic why bother commenting at all?
I know from other threads that you are a 'reformed' smoker and that you would just as soon tobacco never been invented by G*d.

Eric,
Why don't you just stay away from bars and businesses that allow smoking?

What is really surprising on these threads is the inability of some of our brightest FReepers to understand the simplicity of the issue. I guess it can be said they can't see it for all the smoke in the room.

Anyone who believes tobacco is not harmful is ignoring the obvious.
Now at less than 23 percent of the population, American smokers are becoming ex-smokers and leaving the tobacco habit on the ash heap of history.

eric,
"name a single benefit from tobacco use."
How about how much I enjoy cleaning my pipe, filling my pipe, lighting my pipe, and smoking my pipe?

You have now been put on ignore until you post something pertinent to the discussion.

Not pertinent ?
Glad to know you're making the FR pertinency rules. Just what we need on a conservative web site...or did you miss that ?

"I'm 71 years old,Eric!!!!" Hey, me too -- and then some. A '29'er. Tobacco was a great appetite killer back in those depression years when food was scarce.
To: Eric in the Ozarks
Eric,
If you hate smoke so much, stay home. If I'm in a bar smoking my pipe and I see the police escort you to that same bar and force you top sit next to me, then and only then, will I extinguish my pipe in respect to your feelings.

The world would be a better place if this addiction had been kept an Indian secret.
Yeah, the first Thanksgiving, we gave them alcohol, they gave us tobacco. Hey! That wasn't so good after all ;-P

Eric, you're trying to change the topic of this thread.
The topic of this thread is not the health effects of tobacco on the human system. You know it, I know it, everyone reading the thread knows it. If you were any type of truthful about it you would admit it.
Stop while you're behind.
I'm not trying to tell you any rules, jus stating the obvious.

You're reading way too much into my comment on tobacco--probably because you want to.
To: Just another Joe; Eric in the Ozarks
Yes, Eric. You're obfuscating and off-topic. Now light up and relax a little.
