A GLIMMER OF LIGHT FOR VETERAN DEPRESSION
Mitchell County ^ | December 15, 2021 | ANDREA HILLMAN

“I’ve seen ‘impossible’ happen so many times, it’s just common to me,” Robert Bailey, Jr. said as he showed me his most prized work: The Freedom Lantern. Robert’s dream is to see the U.S. government gift one of these meticulously crafted pieces to every U.S. veteran. The piece is meant to serve as a “thank you” for their service from a grateful nation and as a physical reminder that “someone cares.”

“You know, that’s why we work with these veterans. We really like veterans, and I got to watching this veteran suicide business. It’s disturbing. I’ve been there, and I’ve seen these folks. I dealt with one of them pretty close one time,” Robert shared.

Hmmmm, like a SAD light?

An hour or so of bright light fights Seasonal Affective Disorder. Could it reduce ‘ordinary’ depression?

When you feel the heat, you'll see the light...

Like a politician, although I'm not exactly comparing you to one...

Heard an army medical doctor tell a story.

Army wanted to know why some vets came back and transitioned easily into civilian life. Others fell apart.

Doctor’s wanted to know why.

They weren’t interested in psychology. They were looking for differences in physiology.

What they found was that people who did well had omega 6/omega 3 ratios of 4/1 or less.

People who did poorly had omega 6/omega 3 ratios of roughly 25 to one—which is closer to the american average.

Another study found that long lived populations in the so called blue zones around the world have omega 6/ omega 3 ratios of close to 1/1

I have seen recent studies that suggest fish oil supplementation of as much as 4 grams per day

Source, please?

Not that I doubt you! But I’d like to show proof to others who will (they’d poo-poo “Ex-Lax treats constipation” while sitting on the throne!).

That study and $1.50 will get you a terrible cup of coffee at a diner somewhere late at night.

When I came back I ate salmon, crab, oysters, shrimp, halibut, rockfish I caught, dug, trapped because other than wild berries that’s all I had to eat. Didn’t help.

Yes, and giving every veteran an ugly lantern will stop suicides? Call me skeptical.

Maybe veteran suicides have more to do with the country that veterans served for has become so immoral it’s depressing.

I blame the high number of Veteran suicides on the VA. The amount of med’s and type of meds they have our male and females Vet’s on is horrendous. They just keep piling them on until they don’t know who they are anymore. They do more damage than good and worse case they kill.

you have to leave your email to read this one.

https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2017/06/08/Nutritional-Armor-US-Army-explores-boosting-omega-3-levels-with-food-and-supplements#

Here is a nih study:

The US Army invests significant time and money in training its leaders. Individuals who choose the Army Infantry as their career expend significant time, energy, and commitment to self-development to achieve their career goals. Omega-3 HUFAs, specifically DHA are concentrated in neural tissues, are essential for neural function [2], and must be obtained from dietary sources. US food production practices over the last century have resulted in a dramatic change in the fatty acid profile of the US diet. At the same time, evidence continues to build regarding the potential importance of omega-3 HUFAs on emotional state, cognitive function and mental health. US military personnel frequently have low omega-3 HUFA status [53]. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether supplementation with omega-3 HUFAs from a krill oil concentrate (PL), with its possible advantages in bioavailability and high amount of PC, will improve emotional status and related cognitive performance under stress among IBOLC students (Phase I) and subsequent RC (Phase II). More broadly, approximately 35% of military spouses report stress related psychiatric illnesses [54]. A potential impact of this study would be information that would support the role for krill oil concentrate containing omega-3 HUFAs in contributing to improving mood, emotional status and cognitive performance among the US population in general [55].

Here’s a couple more links on the topic. All point to the army’s interest in omega 3’s. Some mention that the modern american diet in the last century has shifted too heavily to omega 6’s https://www.army.mil/article/172714/omega_3_study_aims_to_give_soldiers_a_cognitive_advantage

Ok I found the specific study that I was referencing.

Soldiers and Omega-3s: Pentagon Pitched on Benefits
Vital Choice hears top researchers present compelling evidence in favor of providing omega-3s to soldiers for mental and physical benefits
11/12/2009
By Randy Hartnell with Craig Weatherby
Last month, we attended a unique conference, convened to present armed forces officers with evidence in favor of adding omega-3s to soldiers’ diets.

This was a very timely conference, given the recent rise in suicide rates among service people serving in war zones, and those who’ve returned from combat areas.

Historically, the suicide rate has been lower in the military than among civilians. In 2008 that pattern was reversed, with the suicide rate in the Army exceeding the age-adjusted rate in the civilian population (20.2 out of 100,000 vs. 19.2) — the highest rate since the Army began keeping records in 1980.

The invitation-only event — titled “Nutritional Armor for the Warfighter: Can Omega-3 Fatty Acids Enhance Stress Resilience, Wellness, and Military Performance?” — was intended for uniformed and civilian Defense Department personnel with responsibility for soldiers’ health and/or influence within the Pentagon.

I dont want a lantern.

I want my government to stop leaving guys like me to die in faraway place that their parents cant even pronounce.

I want my government to acknowledge my disabilities without me having to pay a shark lawyer to know which boxes to check and especially which ones NOT to check. What words to say to to get you to help me with my injuries and what words NOT to say that put me in the permanent ignore category.

I want my government to support the Constitution that I swore my life to defend against what I have found out to be “American citizens” deeply imbedded in my own government subverting its pourpose from the inside, writing laws that make it harder on me that apply to me and does NOT apply to them.

I probably should just take the lantern.

You may have a genetic predisposition to these issues. Does anyone in your family have alzheimer’s or a related issues. These issues typically get really prominent in the over 70 set.

Maybe that's why I like to use the bright light over my computer. I always thought it was just so I could see the keyboard.
