Less than two months ago, Prime Minister Jean Chretien was assuring Canadians that the legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada would not lead to religious persecution. Various religious bodies in Canada would be permitted to continue holding and teaching their beliefs. My how things changed have changed over the summer. According to a recent article in the Globe and Mail, Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe of the Diocese of Sault Ste Marie is now under attack by some among Canada's political and social elite. Why? Because he had the audacity to take the Prime Minister at his word and clarify Catholic teaching for Catholic politicians who prefer to fudge the issue.

I was going to post a new topic linked to an Editorial by M.D. HARMON in the Monday (08/02/04) edition of the Portland (ME) Press Herald, entitled:
"Persecution of Christians is growing - in Sweden and Canada"
But this topic is essentially on the same subject so I'll just post it here in stead, if you don't mind.
Mr. Harmon's Article may be seen until the 10th of this Month @:
http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/viewpoints/harmon/040802harmon.shtml
Brief expert (with Author's permission):
"...Among the nations often cited (for persecution)are China, where unregistered Christians are beaten, imprisoned and killed by government agents;
Egypt, where Coptic Christians are assaulted by Muslims and authorities ignore it;
India, where recently a missionary and his sons were burned alive by a Hindu mob and Christians are often abused; Indonesia, where Muslims, sometimes backed by soldiers, have wiped out whole villages;
and Pakistan, where gunmen attack churches and clergy need full-time guards.
That's only a partial list: Freedom House, http://www.freedomhouse.org/religion/ (link added - UJ)
which tracks persecution worldwide, estimates that about 160,000 Christians are killed every year for their faith.
Still, most people offering up those prayers likely never thought they would want to add Sweden and Canada to the list.
But here's an item I found last week on the Internet:
"A Swedish court sentenced a Pentecostal minister to a month in jail after he was found guilty of offending homosexual persons in a sermon. In 2003, Pastor Ake Green said homosexuality was 'abnormal' and a 'horrible cancerous tumor in the body of society.' "
Now I knew things were bad in Sweden - but I had no idea that such systematic persecution had spread to Canada!
Harmon continues:
"...But what's this about Canada? Aren't they just like us?
That's precisely what has some traditional Christians worried. Here's what R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, operated by the largest Protestant body in the United States, wrote in a May 24 column on www.crosswalk.com:
'On April 28, the Canadian Senate passed bill C-250 by a vote of 59 to 11. In passing this legislation, the Canadian Parliament added 'sexual orientation' to the nation's laws criminalizing 'hate speech.' The end result is that the Bible may now be considered a form of criminalized hate literature and Christians who teach that homosexuality is sinful may face criminal charges.'...
... A Saskatchewan man, Hugh Owens, placed an ad in a local paper listing the Bible verses that establish male-female marriage as the biblical moral standard and exclude homosexuality. He and the paper were fined for it, and the paper was ordered never to print such an ad again.
In fact, the ad didn't even quote the verses; it just cited them. So printing "Genesis 1: 18-24,"
"Romans 1: 26-32" or "Jude 7-8" could get me fined in Saskatoon.
# A Toronto-area Roman Catholic high school was forced by the courts to allow a same-sex couple at its prom. The school was also forbidden to cancel the dance.
# Toronto printer Scott Brockie was fined "thousands" for refusing a print job from a homosexual group. His protest that printing such material violated his religious beliefs was rejected by the court. ..."
And it goes on!
If you want to know what the Christian Church can expect under a KERRY regime, I think that a perusal of what's going on up in our neighbor to the North will provide a pretty reliable clue.
"Sign of the times"?
Stay tuned!

Try preaching radical feminism or pro-homosexual agendas, and they'll see how the local imam feels about it.
Open a Planned Parenthood in Mosul. Something tells me they'll have, err, high turnover rates. Like every day.
Isn't it amazing how little concern there is among Americans in the fact that speaking out against homosexuality is a crime in Canada and soon will be in the United States?
Welcome to modern liberalism? How does this happen? ...Who is John Galt?
Thanks for the Ping!
I just think most of them aren't reading the news like we do Happy. I tell people things and they don't believe it. Then, as you know, I can't remember the original source to give them the proof!!
Reading too many FR threads will cause your coffee to get cold!
