Prayer for the Faithful Departed
Cardinal John Henry Newman
O GOD of the Spirits of all flesh, O Jesu, Lover of souls, we recommend unto Thee the souls of all those Thy servants, who have departed with the sign of faith and sleep the sleep of peace. We beseech Thee, O Lord and Saviour, that, as in Thy mercy to them Thou becamest man, so now Thou wouldest hasten the time, and admit them to Thy presence above. Remember, O Lord, that they are Thy creatures, not made by strange gods, but by Thee, the only Living and True God; for there is no other God but Thou, and none that can equal Thy works. Let their souls rejoice in Thy light, and impute not to them their former iniquities, which they committed through the violence of passion, or the corrupt habits of their fallen nature. For, although they have sinned, yet they always firmly believed in the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; and before they died, they reconciled themselves to Thee by true contrition and the Sacraments of Thy Church.
O Gracious Lord, we beseech Thee, remember not against them the sins of their youth and their ignorances; but according to Thy great mercy, be mindful of them in Thy heavenly glory. May the heavens be opened to them, and the Angels rejoice with them. May the Archangel St Michael conduct them to Thee. May Thy holy Angels come forth to meet them, and carry them to the city of the heavenly Jerusalem. May St Peter, to whom Thou gayest the keys of the kingdom of heaven, receive them. May St Paul, the vessel of election, stand by them. May St John, the beloved disciple, who had the revelation of the secrets of heaven, intercede for them. May all the Holy Apostles, who received from Thee the power of binding and loosing, pray for them. May all the Saints and elect of God, who in this world suffered torments for Thy Name, befriend them; that, being freed from the prison beneath, they may be admitted into the glories of that kingdom, where with the Father and the Holy Ghost Thou livest and reignest one God, world without end.
Come to their assistance, all ye Saints of God; gain for them deliverance from their place of punishment; meet them, all ye Angels; receive these holy souls, and present them before the Lord. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord. And may perpetual light shine on them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.'

I read about drstevej's brother on the other thread yesterday - I devoted last night's rosary to his family, especially for his wife... I cannot imagine the sorrow of losing a beloved brother. May he rest in peace.

Thanks for your prayers and kind concern.
My brother-in-law deliberately chose a course in life that he knew was clearly contrary to biblical standards causing a lot of pain to himself, his family and others. In many ways his life was tragic. Nevertheless, he had a family who loved him.
We do not know what may have transpired in his life in the closing weeks, etc. and will leave that uncertainty in the hands of God.

I did a deathbed baptism, following conversion, for the son of a church member last week. His father had died just 2 weeks before. He came down with an inoperable, fast-moving cancer. A vibrant 53 year old looked like a 75 year old in less than 6 weeks.
Like the woman at the well, he had been married 3 times and the woman he was now with was not his wife (and was the daughter of his 2nd wife).
His mother refused to leave his bedside praying for him when he asked her about believing in Jesus. The family prayed with him. I was asked over and heard him with my own ears. The church came and we conducted a baptism right on his hospice bed.
He breathed more easily and 24 hours later, he gave up the ghost.
We never know what transpires in the last moments. You are exactly correct.

We do not know what may have transpired in his life in the closing weeks, etc. and will leave that uncertainty in the hands of God. It was much the same when my dad passed away. We have hope. We have faith.
You and your family are in my prayers.
To: xzins; All
Great to have you back, thanks for the encouraging words.
Many thanks to the others who are praying as well.

"We do not know what may have transpired in his life in the closing weeks, etc. and will leave that uncertainty in the hands of God."
If we don't know, we can pray that he turned to the Lord before he died, even though it's in the past.
The Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great
"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said thoughout the world today, for all the holy souls in puragory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family."
And for drstevej's brother-in-law, that he accepted Your mercy before he passed away.
Amen
