The Return of the Latin Mass?
Exclusive: The Vatican is preparing to call, in the clearest way since the Second Vatican Council, for an end to liturgical abuses -- and for far wider use of the old Latin Mass
The do-it-yourself Mass is ended. Go in peace.
By Robert Moynihan
VATICAN CITY, May 13, 2003 Forty years after the Second Vatican Council, after four decades of liturgical "experimentation" which has troubled many of the faithful, Rome is about to issue a major disciplinary document, ending years of a generally "laissez faire" attitude toward liturgical experimentation and do-it-youself Masses.
The document is now in draft form and is expected to be published between October and Christmas this year.
In a bombshell passage, the document will also encourage far wider use of the old Mass, the Tridentine rite Mass, in Latin, throughout the Roman Catholic Church.
The new, stricter guidelines for celebrating the liturgy, and the mandate to celebrate the old Latin Mass more widely, even on a weekly basis, in every parish in the world, will be contained in a document to be published by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, headed by Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze.
We expect the document to be published before Christmas, Arinze told "Inside the Vatican" in an exclusive interview. We want to respond to the spiritual hunger and sorrow so many of the faithful have expressed to us because of liturgical celebrations that seemed irreverent and unworthy of true adoration of God. You might sum up our document with words that echo the final words of the Mass: The do-it-yourself Mass is ended. Go in peace.
We will be reporting in more detail on this historic document in future issues of "Inside the Vatican."

Now you attack aged Catholics who attend the NO Mass but kneel. Your charity appears to be boundless.

I once read an editorial, ten years ago, in which somebody at the Wanderer was still railing at priests who go out in public, and to athletic events, in casual dress. Well, being out of the collar, as long as he had punched out and wasn't stealing time from the company shouldn't be a problem. ;-)

For high art, I go to the opera or the symphony.
Actually, that's where I've been performing lately.
High art IS our heritage as Catholics and to just throw it out is a mistake.

They are always "on company time". The collar symbolizes their slavery to the Church. By appearing in Mufti they simultaneously deprive those around them from the silent witness to Christ that helps restrain our baser impulses and also helps keep them from occasions of sin.

Your charity appears to be boundless. It is, but I could make an exception in your case.

Exactly. A hatefilled perversion of "charity".

"This is not a matter of demand, but a matter of what is true Catholic worship. There are millions out there who don't even know about this. I was one of them until late last year. I bet that if people knew the truth, at least some would make the switch"I believe you are right. Also, I believe that we will see a strengthening of the priesthood and an increase in the number of priests - good men who want to serve.

I agree with you 100% IMO, one of the most tragic things to occur within the last 30 +/- years is the nuns throwing off the habits.
I was being sarcastic with my comment. Being a priest, as you say, is a commitment made out of love that encompasses every minute of every day and the priest serves as a visible witness to Christ.

There was a back in Nova Scotia about 20 years ago where the bishop of Antigonish and a parish priest had several parishoners arrested for disrupting a divine service.
Their disruption? Kneeling for Communion.
The case made it all the way up to the Supreme Court of Canada, where their acquittals were upheld.
The liberals are preparing a scorched-earth defence of their positions. It is going to get very ugly, very quickly.

One tiny correction, "uglier". It is already ugly. Two of three American Bishops is credibly accused of participating in either criminal pederasty or the culpable and wilfull coverup of same. The liturgical abuses are legion and so entrenched that we have here a Deacon of the Church attacking the aged pius who wish to kneel to receive Our Lord. But you are absolutely correct, the battle finale is joined and Hell is going to break loose. Deo Gratias we know that the Church will prevail.

YOu seem to get in many fights on FR sinkspur. Could it be, and I have noticed it not just on the Catholics threads but other threads I happen to see you post in. Could it might be that maybe it is not the case of you being right and everyone else being wrong, or more like, the style that you debate in lacks charity and civility.

Could it might be that if I could figure out what that sentence, or more like, the whole phrasing thing, meant, I could answer you, maybe?
If you want to ask a question, or accuse me of something, just come right out and ask it, or do it.

The Novus Ordo is the normative Mass; the Tridentine is an exception and always will be..
In 1969, the Tridentine Mass was the normative Mass, and it was suppressed overnight by a purely pastoral council.
You repeatedly state that no Pope can trump another Pope; why can't a future Pope trump Paul VI and suppress the Novus Ordo overnight as Pope Paul did with the Tridentine?
To: sinkspur
Just a nice way of saying at least based on the way I see you debate on the Catholic and other threads, that you are a bitter and angry man looking for a reason to "fight" so to speak, and you seem to be quite patronising to most anyone who disagrees. When you trsh elederly people who want to be reverent for kneeling for communion, it shows you have a extreme lack of charity, it clearly shows where your mindset is.

You've accused me of being "bitter" in four posts, now, and you've added angry to it. You think I want to "fight." And, I'm patronising.
You think, maybe, you just might be a tad uncharitable yourself, Jinbo?

Sorry, but my comment about "doddering seniors" was meant to be a ridiculous counterpoint to Loyalists' ridiculous and sarcastic comment about "the dog ate my Missal."
How many times am I going to have to explain this on this thread? Oy vey, I'm pulling my hair out!
