WAY OF THE CROSS

Actor Robert Legere, of St.Louis-de-Kent, New Brunswick, portraying Jesus Christ, reenacts the crucifixion as part of the World Youth Day celebrations, in Toronto, Ont. on Friday July 26, 2002.
An actor playing Jesus depicts the tortured stages of Christ's passage to the cross. He too is condemned to death, takes up his cross, falls under its weight and ultimately is hoisted above the crowd on that same crude frame.
Realism, said Ms. Parsons, is the objective. "It's an attempt to bring home the scarifices Jesus made for us."

It just seemed to follow naturally to post the beautiful Way of the Cross by St. Alphonsus Liguri. Probably not too many people know these anymore. We never say them at my Church. During Lent at the parish I attend we do the Way of the Cross according to St. Alphonsus Liguori (Tan Books publishes a booklet with the prayers and illustrations). It is very beautiful and moving.

Jesus Falls a Second Time
My Most gentle Jesus, how many times hast Thou pardoned me, and how many times have I fallen again, and begun again to offend Thee! Oh, by the merits of this new fall, give me the necessary helps to persevere in Thy grace until death. Grant that in all temptations which assail me I may always commend myself to Thee. I love Thee, Jesus my Love, with my whole heart, I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I may Love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem
My Jesus, laden with sorrows,I weep for the offences I have committed against Thee, because of the pains they have deserved, and still more because of the displeasure they have caused Thee, Who hast loved me so much. It is Thy love, more than the fear of hell, which causes me to weep for my sins. My Jesus, I love Thee more than myself; I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always; and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus Falls a Third Time
Ah, My outraged Jesus, by the merits of the weakness Thou didst suffer in going to Calvary, give me strength sufficient to conquer all human respect, and all my wicked passions, which have led me to despise Thy friendship. I love Thee, Jesus my Love, with my whole heart, I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus is Stripped of His Garments
My Innocent Jesus, by the merits of the torment Thou hast felt, help me to strip myself of all affection to things of earth, in order that I may place all my love in Thee, Who art so worthy of my love. I love Thee, O Jesus, with my whole heart; I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I may love thee always; and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross
My Jesus, loaded with contempt, nail my heart to Thy feet, that it may ever remain there, to love Thee, and never quit Thee again. I love Thee more than myself; I repent of having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus Dies on the Cross
My Dying Jesus, I kiss devoutly the Cross on which Thou didst die for love of me. I have merited by my sins to die a miserable death; but Thy Death is my hope. Ah, by the merits of Thy Death, give me grace to die embracing Thy feet, and burning with love for Thee. I yield my soul into Thy hands. I love Thee with my whole heart; I repent of ever having offended Thee. Permit not that I ever offend Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always; and then do with me what Thou wilt.

The Body of Jesus Is Placed in the Arms of His Mother
O Mother of Sorrow, for the love of this Son, accept me for Thy servant, and pray to Him for me. And Thou, my Redeemer, since Thou hast died for me, permit me to love Thee; for I wish but Thee, and nothing more. I love Thee, my Jesus, and I repent of ever having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I my love Thee always; and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb
Ah, My buried Jesus, I kiss the stone that encloses Thee. But Thou didst rise again the third day. I beseech Thee, by Thy resurrection, make me rise glorious with Thee at the last day, to be always united with Thee in heaven, to praise Thee and love Thee forever. I love Thee, and I repent of ever having offended Thee. Permit not that I ever offend Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always; and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Is this not one of the most beautiful depictions of the pieta?
Thank you for posting that link. I am truly hopeful that EWTN will make a videotape available of this Way of the Cross. I tried to tape it myself but the &^%$# vcr refused to accept that channel into its program.

thanks for posting - I hope we can ask EWTN to show it again next week so we can get our vcr's ready. I saw the last few last night - Deo Gratias.

I am truly hopeful that EWTN will make a videotape available of this Way of the Cross. I am going to contact them and ask them if a tape is available. Maybe if they hear from enough of us, they'll get the hint.

Thanks Nyer. I saw some of this today - it was unbelievable. I'm sure the kids in the audience were inspired because I was inspired just seeing the small part I could on tv. Thank God for EWTN.
Was JPII present? I couldn't watch it long enough to find out. Thanks, salvation for letting us know JPII wrote the text - from what I was able to see and hear, it was truly beautiful.
I'm kind of kicking myself I didn't drive up to Canada with the kids... it isn't that far for me.

Do you know if they will be offering a video of this incredible event??? I teached Catechism and would love to show it to my students. I think it would be a powerful presentation.
